107: Chapter 107 A Gift from "God"

Upon entering Rabe's Safety Zone, the pungent smell of blood, disinfectant, and excrement hit Chen Xi's nose hard.

This was no paradise.

It was merely a larger, more crowded purgatory on earth.

Wounded people lay groaning everywhere in the courtyard and corridors.

Faces were contorted with pain, hunger, and fear; their eyes were hollow, devoid of even a glimmer of light.

Rabe handed the exhausted Professor Liu to an assistant and then led Chen Xi quickly toward a temporary operating room converted from an office.

"Our doctors are all here, but he..." Rabe's voice was hoarse, filled with deep helplessness.

He pushed open the door.

An even stronger smell of blood wafted toward them.

Several doctors and nurses in white coats, long since soaked in blood and filth, were busy around a makeshift operating table.

There was no electricity.

Only a few dim, flickering kerosene lamps cast ghost-like shadows on the walls.

Under the light of the oil lamps, a young man's abdomen was cut open, his intestines spilled out. A doctor was using tweezers, struggling to find shrapnel in his bloody abdominal cavity.

Beads of sweat dripped from the doctor's forehead.

"Damn it! I can't see! Closer!" the lead surgeon growled under his breath.

A nurse hurriedly brought the oil lamp closer, but the light remained dim. With a tremble of her hand, a few drops of scalding lamp oil splashed onto the wound.

*Sizzle—*

The smell of burnt flesh permeated the air.

The wounded man's body twitched violently once, and then, he stopped moving entirely.

"...He's gone."

The lead surgeon dejectedly set down the tweezers, which were still trailing threads of blood.

*Clink.*

The tweezers fell into the tray, making a sharp, piercing sound.

"Next!"

Rabe closed his eyes, his face etched with pain.

He turned around and said to Chen Xi, "You see, Mr. Chen. The generator has no fuel, and the medicine has run out. I... I can only watch them die one by one."

This German man, who had never flinched before the Japanese Army, now spoke with a voice full of despair.

Chen Xi said nothing.

He just watched it all quietly.

Then, he walked to the operating table and said to the nearly exhausted lead surgeon, "Doctor, can I borrow some space? I have some... personal items that might help."

The doctor raised his bloodshot eyes and looked at him in confusion.

Rabe also came over and asked, puzzled, "Mr. Chen, you..."

Chen Xi didn't explain.

He simply took something out of his seemingly ordinary backpack.

An old-fashioned Hand-cranked Radio that looked like a product of the last century.

The viewers in the Livestream room were all stunned.

[What is Master Xi doing? What time is it, and he wants to listen to the radio?]

[This vibe isn't right...]

Chen Xi placed the "radio" on the ground and then, unhurriedly, turned the crank on the side.

One turn.

Two turns.

*Hum—*

A faint, almost imperceptible sound of electric current rang out.

The next second.

*Pop!*

The dust-covered electric light on the operating room ceiling lit up without any warning.

A blinding, bright, and steady white light instantly illuminated the entire room, driving away all shadows and phantoms.

The entire operating room fell into a deathly silence.

Everyone stopped what they were doing.

The lead surgeon's mouth hung open as he looked at the light on the ceiling in disbelief, then at the small "radio" at Chen Xi's feet.

A nurse, overcome with shock, dropped the tray in her hand with a loud "clatter."

Rabe, a devout Christian, subconsciously crossed himself, his lips trembling as he uttered a few words:

"...Oh, my God."

The miracle was not over yet.

While everyone was still in a state of immense shock, Chen Xi made another move.

He walked to the next wounded person being carried in.

It was a Soldier whose femoral artery had been severed by shrapnel; blood was gushing out like a fountain.

"It's too late... prepare for amputation..." the doctor said despairingly.

"Wait."

Chen Xi stopped him.

He took another item out of his backpack.

A small green spray bottle with a cartoon frog pattern on it.

It had several large characters written on it—[Strong Mosquito Repellent Spray].

Chen Xi unscrewed the cap and gave the bleeding wound a gentle spray.

*Sizzle—*

A white mist with a cool scent covered the wound.

Then, under everyone's horrified gazes.

That wound, which had been deep enough to see the bone and was bleeding profusely, began to shrink, heal, and scab over at a speed visible to the naked eye.

Three seconds.

It only took three seconds.

The bleeding stopped.

The wound was left with only a faint, pink mark.

"..."

The lead surgeon tremblingly reached out to touch the skin that was as good as new, then suddenly pulled back as if he had been burned.

He looked at Chen Xi, his eyes filled with an indescribable fear and awe.

*Thud.*

A young nurse's legs gave way, and she knelt directly on the ground.

Rabe's body swayed; he grabbed the doorframe to barely steady himself.

He looked at Chen Xi as if he were looking at a god walking among men.

Chen Xi ignored the crowd's reaction.

He tossed the [mosquito repellent spray] to the still-dazed lead surgeon and said calmly, "Use it sparingly."

Then, he pulled several large boxes of beautifully packaged "Imported Chocolates" and "high-grade candies" from his backpack and placed them on the table.

"One piece of these chocolates can keep you from being hungry for a day. One of these candies can purify a bucket of sewage."

Having done all this, he turned around, looked at the already petrified Rabe, and spoke again in fluent German:

"Mr. Rabe, now, can we talk about cooperation?"

Rabe looked at him, his lips twitching for a long time before he finally found his voice.

He didn't answer.

Instead, he stepped forward, gripped Chen Xi's hand tightly and firmly, and said in an incredibly solemn and devout tone:

"Mr. Chen... no, my friend. Please tell me what you need me to do. As long as it is to save lives, the gates of this Safety Zone will always be open to you and your friends. You may use all the supplies of the Siemens Company as you wish."

"I, John Rabe, swear to you in the name of God."

Chen Xi knew.

From this moment on, he finally had the safest and most reliable rear base in this hell on earth.
