112: Chapter 112 The Final Kill (Part 2)
The moment Xiao Zhi slammed into Long Zaifei like a cannonball, Long Zaifei’s body twisted in a bizarre way, narrowly avoiding the impact!
"Such a quick reaction!" Chen Fan's pupils contracted slightly.
One must know that Xiao Zhi's sprint speed was already very fast. Long Zaifei's ability to dodge by mere millimeters showed that his neural reflexes far surpassed ordinary people.
Before Long Zaifei could steady himself, Xiao Zhi changed direction and lunged again, but the cramped space of the basement limited its acceleration distance, greatly reducing its attack speed. Long Zaifei moved with agile maneuvers, easily evading each time.
Seeing that Xiao Zhi was unable to take down the opponent, Chen Fan took a deep breath, a fierce glint flashing in his eyes. He no longer defended passively, gripping the entrenching tool tightly with both hands, and charged directly at Long Zaifei—meeting attack with attack!
"Clang! Clang! Clang!"
The entrenching tool, whistling through the air, struck down like a dense rain, each blow precisely targeting Long Zaifei's vulnerable spots: joint crevices, and the connections between his carapace plates. Dark green, foul-smelling blood splattered out, landing on the cold walls and instantly leaving mottled corrosive marks.
Long Zaifei's wounds grew more numerous, yet strangely, those deep, bone-visible gashes visibly wriggled and healed at a speed discernible to the naked eye, leaving only shallow scars in a matter of seconds.
"Damn healing ability!" Chen Fan cursed under his breath.
Xiao Zhi immediately adjusted its tactics, cooperating to attack Long Zaifei's limbs, attempting to restrict his movements. But Long Zaifei was clearly completely enraged, his eyes glowing fiercely, abandoning all defense. His sharp claws and fangs came out, and he lunged at Chen Fan like a madman, intent on tearing the human who kept injuring him into a thousand pieces.
Chen Fan maneuvered between the sharp claws with agile movements, but he knew in his heart that continuing this attrition would lead to certain defeat.
Long Zaifei's healing ability relied on energy metabolism, while his and Xiao Zhi's stamina would eventually run out.
In this moment of life and death, a thought suddenly flashed through Chen Fan's mind—when dealing with creatures infected by the omega virus before, high concentrations of oxygen could instantly destroy their cellular structure! As an Aberration, Long Zaifei would likely also fear such an extreme environment!
"Xiao Zhi, attack its chest carapace with full force, force it to get injured!" Chen Fan made a decisive move, while parrying Long Zaifei's claws with his shovel, he activated the Amplification device in his body, beginning to extract oxygen from the air for compression and synthesis.
[Warning! Current oxygen concentration has exceeded 6%. Exceeding 80% will trigger an explosion risk, and a violent oxidation reaction may occur in a confined space!] Xiao Zhi's urgent electronic alert sounded.
"That's exactly the effect I want!" Chen Fan's eyes were sharp as blades. "Its healing speed relies on rapid metabolism. A sudden surge in oxygen concentration will cause its metabolism to completely spiral out of control, drastically increasing energy consumption. At that point, its healing speed will definitely not keep up with the rate of injury!"
No sooner had he spoken than Long Zaifei's movements suddenly faltered.
His originally violent offensive came to an abrupt halt. He clutched his chest, a look of incredible pain on his face. His breathing became abnormally smooth, but the energy within his body surged uncontrollably like a wild horse. The wounds that had just healed suddenly burst open, and dark green blood gushed out like a fountain, even carrying tiny bubbles.
"You... what exactly did you do?!" Long Zaifei asked, his voice hoarse like a broken gong, his body trembling uncontrollably, a mix of shock and fury.
"Nothing," Chen Fan sneered coldly, his entrenching tool still working, each blow exacerbating Long Zaifei's injuries. "Just helping you 'accelerate your evolution.' Haven't you always wanted to become a stronger monster? I'm granting your wish."
"No—!"
Long Zaifei let out a desperate roar, wanting to lunge at Chen Fan again, but his body had completely lost control. Dense cracks appeared on the surface of his carapace, and his muscle tissue churned and expanded like boiling water, then rapidly festered and dissolved. Dark green liquid continuously dripped from his wounds, corroding the concrete floor. He staggered and fell to his knees, clutching his head, his body convulsing violently, his screams echoing through the narrow basement, chilling to the bone.
Chen Fan seized this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, his eyes narrowing. All his strength poured into his arm, and the entrenching tool thrust out like a black lightning bolt, accurately striking the flickering brand on Long Zaifei's forehead!
"Pfft!"
With a crisp sound, the brand shattered. What flowed out was not blood, but a viscous, golden glowing liquid that instantly evaporated upon hitting the ground, filling the air with a strange burnt smell.
Long Zaifei's body tensed abruptly, then began to convulse wildly. Without the support of the energy source, his self-healing ability instantly collapsed, and all his wounds burst open simultaneously. Dark green blood gushed out like a broken dam, forming a foul-smelling puddle on the ground.
His body withered at a visible speed, hard carapace plates peeled off one by one, and his muscles dissolved and liquefied. In just a few seconds, he transformed from a terrifying two-and-a-half-meter-tall Aberration back into a scrawny, emaciated humanoid figure.
Finally, he collapsed heavily onto the ground, the red light in his eyes completely extinguished, leaving only a hollow, deathly gray, utterly devoid of any sound.
Chen Fan slowly walked over to him, looking down at this once arrogant madman who had tried to transform the world with the virus, his eyes cold and unmoving.
Long Zaifei's lips moved with difficulty, as if he wanted to say something, and vague 'ho-ho' sounds came from his throat. In the end, he only managed to squeeze out a few broken, intermittent words: "My brother... won't... let you go..."
With that, his head lolled to the side, and he was completely still.
Chen Fan did not relax his guard in the slightest, ordering Xiao Zhi: "Full scan, confirm life signals and energy fluctuations."
[Scanning... First scan: No life signals, energy fluctuations at zero. Second scan: No residual active cells detected. Third scan: Target is completely dead, no possibility of revival.]
It wasn't until Xiao Zhi's confirmation tone sounded that Chen Fan finally let out a long sigh of relief, his tense body instantly relaxing, his back drenched in cold sweat.
He picked up the communicator and reported to the surface: "Lei Zhen, threat neutralized, Long Zaifei is dead."
Lei Zhen's voice, clearly relieved and with a hint of praise, came through the communicator: "Received! Well done, Chen Fan! We'll come down to meet you immediately!"
Ten minutes later, Lei Zhen led a team of fully armed soldiers down through the ventilation shaft. When they saw Long Zaifei's gruesome corpse on the ground, and the bloodstains and corrosive marks on the surrounding walls, everyone gasped, their eyes filled with awe as they looked at Chen Fan.
"This place cannot remain," Chen Fan said, pointing around. "Long Zaifei's laboratory likely still has omega virus residue, and it must be thoroughly disinfected. I suggest high-temperature incineration, burying the entire basement along with everything inside, leaving absolutely no hidden dangers."
Lei Zhen nodded heavily. "I'll arrange it immediately." He turned and gave orders to the soldiers behind him, "Immediately set up directional blasting devices and fuel injection systems. Incineration and burial will commence in thirty minutes!"
The soldiers responded in unison and quickly began to act.
Lei Zhen walked over to Chen Fan, silent for a few seconds, then reached out and patted his shoulder, his tone sincere: "Chen Fan, we really owe you a lot this time. If it weren't for you, we don't know how many more brothers we would have sacrificed to take down Long Zaifei. On behalf of the military, I extend our most sincere gratitude to you."
"No need to be polite," Chen Fan shook his head, his tone calm. "I did it for myself too. If Long Zaifei's plan had succeeded, the entire Northwest would have become a paradise for Aberrations, and no one would have escaped."
He paused, then changed the subject: "Although Long Zaifei is dead, there are still a large number of infected Aberration animals in the Gobi Desert. The cleanup work is difficult and risky. I have a suggestion."
"Tell me," Lei Zhen immediately perked up his ears. After this cooperation, he was completely convinced of Chen Fan's ability and wisdom.
"Fanxing Technology recently developed a batch of combat robots," Chen Fan said. "I'll provide a batch to cooperate with your troops in the cleanup. Robots aren't afraid of infection and can enter dangerous areas inaccessible to humans, increasing cleanup efficiency by at least threefold."
Lei Zhen's eyes lit up, a look of pleasant surprise on his face: "Really? That would be fantastic!"
"The robots will be delivered to the Northwest base within a week," Chen Fan nodded, then subtly changed the subject. "However, I need you to do me a favor."
"Just say it, as long as we can do it, there will be no objections!" Lei Zhen said without hesitation.
"Help me collect all the meteorites you can find in this Gobi Desert, regardless of size, the more the better," Chen Fan said seriously. "In return, Fanxing Technology will provide a batch of new protective equipment and efficient disinfectants free of charge, enough to combat the spread and infection of the omega virus."
Lei Zhen pondered for a moment, then extended his hand: "Deal!"
Their hands clasped tightly, this time, with the warmth and trust that passed between them.
In the Gobi Desert's early morning, as dawn was just breaking, a red sun slowly rose from the horizon, casting golden rays that dispelled the night's chill.
Chen Fan stood on the observation tower of the temporary base, looking at the distant site of the laboratory, which had been completely blown up, incinerated, and then buried. It had been leveled, with no trace of its former existence.
"Mr. Chen, your private plane is ready and can take off for Modu at any time," an officer quickly walked to the base of the observation tower and reported respectfully.
Chen Fan nodded, took one last look at this Gobi Desert, once full of death and danger, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes, then turned and walked down the observation tower towards the tarmac.
On the tarmac, a military transport plane was ready for departure, its propellers turning, kicking up gusts of sand.
Before boarding, Chen Fan looked back at the distant Gobi Desert, which held a thrilling battle and buried unknown secrets. He knew that Long Zaifei's dying words were not empty talk; this war against the omega virus and Aberrations might have just begun.
But he was fearless.
The plane slowly took off, soaring into the blue sky, heading towards Modu.
