303: primeval forest, setting up traps
Jiang Chuan landed safely, and a wave of hunger surged through him.
Looking at the primeval forest before him, he didn't know the exact direction. Since he didn't have any tools, the only way he could solve the problem of food and warmth was by using the most primitive methods.
Jiang Chuan found a wooden stick in the primeval forest. After vigorously grinding it with a stone to create a simple spear, he began searching for his meal within the depths of the forest.
After searching for a while, Jiang Chuan failed to find any animal tracks, and he couldn't help but feel discouraged.
"Is that the sound of flowing water?"
As dusk began to settle, Jiang Chuan heard the sound of running water and quickly headed toward the source of the noise.
"I wonder if there are any fish in the water."
Jiang Chuan quickly reached a large river, his eyes shining as he looked into the water.
"I've got it."
Although Jiang Chuan hadn't encountered any other animals, the sight of fish in the water immediately excited him. He thrust his spear, directly hitting one of them. Jiang Chuan then successfully speared five fish in a row, which was enough for a satisfying meal.
After cleaning the five fish, Jiang Chuan gathered some firewood. He then started a fire using the friction method and began to roast his catch.
Once the fish was cooked, Jiang Chuan ate it. Without any seasoning, it lacked flavor, but it was enough to fill his stomach.
*Thump. Thump.*
By the time Jiang Chuan had finished eating, the sky was pitch black. He planned to find a safe spot to rest for the night, as the temperature difference in the primeval forest was significant, and the environment was dangerous. He needed to rest safely before searching for a path to the mountain the following day. Just as he was looking for a place to settle down, he suddenly heard gunshots.
"Why are there gunshots in here?"
Jiang Chuan couldn't help but frown, surprised to hear gunfire in the middle of this primeval forest.
Jiang Chuan immediately grabbed his wooden spear and rushed quickly toward the source of the gunfire, determined to find out what was happening.
"Have all twenty assessment members entered the primeval forest?"
A deep voice sounded from the Heavenly Master Association Headquarters.
"Yes, all twenty assessment members have arrived in the primeval forest. This time we need to select three members to become Divine Envoys, which means we must eliminate seventeen people."
"Good. Are the Roadblockers ready?"
The deep voice asked again.
"All one thousand Roadblockers are ready. They are all well-equipped soldiers carrying live ammunition."
"Good. Let them rest well tonight. The assessment officially begins tomorrow."
The deep voice expressed great satisfaction, and after saying this, silence returned. On the other side, as Jiang Chuan drew closer to the gunfire, he eventually arrived at the location and found traces of bullet holes around the tree trunks. Based on the holes, Jiang Chuan could discern that the weapon used was a rifle, and it was quite powerful.
"Could it be that weapons are allowed in this assessment?"
Jiang Chuan couldn't help but frown as this thought crossed his mind.
Unable to make sense of the situation, Jiang Chuan stopped pondering it. He quickly left the area and found a relatively safe spot to rest for the night.
The following day.
As the first rays of sunlight hit the land, Jiang Chuan caught a few more fish to regain his strength before quickly departing. He intended to rush toward the mountain's location.
*Rat-a-tat-tat.*
"Why is the gunfire so intense here?"
As Jiang Chuan hurried toward the mountain, he suddenly heard a barrage of gunfire. His brow furrowed even deeper; he had no idea what was truly happening in this primeval forest.
Had troops entered this area?
To find out exactly what was going on, Jiang Chuan had no choice but to move closer to the sound of the shooting.
Jiang Chuan was extremely cautious. Since his only weapon was a wooden spear, attempting to fight against the opponent's firearms was impossible, so he needed to proceed carefully.
"There really are troops? Did we accidentally enter a military restricted zone?"
Jiang Chuan witnessed a man being pursued by more than twenty soldiers who were constantly sweeping the area with bullets. Fortunately, the man was strong enough to successfully dodge the projectiles every time and remained temporarily unharmed. Seeing this scene naturally raised confusion in Jiang Chuan's heart.
"There's another person three hundred meters away."
Jiang Chuan watched as the fully armed group got closer and closer to his position. He then saw them suddenly start firing frantically in his direction. Luckily, Jiang Chuan sensed the danger beforehand and managed to dodge in time; the bullets all struck the tree trunks, otherwise, he would have been instantly riddled with holes.
"Those damned bastards."
Jiang Chuan's expression darkened completely, and he instantly understood one thing: this group of fully armed individuals was very likely part of the assessment itself.
Jiang Chuan could sense that they were using live ammunition; if anyone was hit, they would surely die here.
Run!
Jiang Chuan fled the area without hesitation. Since he had no weapon, dealing with the enemy would be extremely difficult.
The pursuit by the fully armed group forced Jiang Chuan farther and farther away from the mountain.
After chasing Jiang Chuan for nearly half an hour, the men behind him finally gave up the pursuit, and he immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
"It seems the difficulty of reaching that mountain is quite high!"
Jiang Chuan's gaze became serious as he muttered to himself.
"Let's go."
Jiang Chuan didn't hesitate; he increased his speed, aiming to put more distance between himself and this location. Now that he knew this fully armed group was part of the assessment, he became even more cautious. He also considered killing a few soldiers to seize their weapons, as he would be at a massive disadvantage otherwise.
"It's impossible to kill them relying on my wooden spear alone. It seems I must set traps. If they are properly placed, I should be able to easily take care of the men pursuing me."
Jiang Chuan's eyes turned cold. He planned to set up traps, eliminate some of the group, and only after acquiring resources from them could he continue his journey toward the mountain more effectively.
Having decided this, Jiang Chuan immediately started working. He gathered a large amount of wood, began sharpening spears one by one, and then set his traps. Next, he just needed to lure the enemy into them.
