11: Chapter 11 The Spider's Bite
In the shadows of the warehouse rafters, Peter Parker held his breath, the sound of his camera shutter perfectly masked by the commotion below.
He continuously took dozens of photos, firmly saving the evidence of the deal between the Grass Stain Gang and Kingpin into his memory card.
He didn't want to directly get involved in Kingpin's underground empire for the time being, but if these gangsters were cleaned out by the Police due to an anonymous tip, it would simply be for the best for him.
He looked down from his vantage point on the rafters.
Today was Sunday night, and tomorrow was the day when Babs, the new leader of the Grass Stain Gang, was scheduled to hand over drugs to Kingpin's people.
In order to find this warehouse, he had tracked them for a whole week, even staking out a strip club until he could recite every single song inside backwards.
Until the people below finished counting the goods and most of the thugs evacuated, leaving only a few Sentinels keeping watch outside, and one idiot wandering around inside with a flashlight.
Peter Parker quietly slid down the wall and groped his way to the door of the main office.
He pulled out his homemade lock-picking tools from his pocket.
Peter Parker had long maxed out his lock-picking skills in school because he frequently had to change his locker combination to deal with bullies like Flash.
"Click."
The door lock opened in response.
He slipped inside and locked the door behind him with a backhand.
The office was empty, save for mountains of folders.
He quickly flipped through them, searching for the paper traces where he last saw Babs recording the flow of funds.
Having searched all the cabinets and desks, he found nothing.
Just as he was about to give up, the floor beneath his feet emitted an imperceptible abnormal sound.
Peter Parker pried open the loose floorboard, and a dial combination safe was impressively hidden underneath.
This kind of old-fashioned lock was a piece of cake for Peter Parker.
He pressed his ear against the safe, held his breath, and relied entirely on the touch of his fingertips and his hearing to capture the interlocking sound of the internal lock cylinder.
"Click."
With a soft sound, the safe opened on cue.
Peter Parker quickly checked the inside, bypassed a tripwire connected to the alarm, and successfully obtained the core ledger recording all shipping records and fund flows.
He couldn't take pictures, because once it was discovered that the pages had been flipped through, the other party would immediately be alert.
He had to take the physical ledger away.
After escaping the warehouse, Peter Parker pulled out a burner phone in a safe dark alley and dialed a number he had spent great effort hacking into the Police department archives to dig up.
The phone rang twice before it was answered.
"Detective Barnes?" Peter Parker deliberately lowered his voice, pretending to look terrified.
"Who are you?"
"I-I am from the Grass Stain Gang, I want to talk to you." Peter Parker breathed heavily, "These madmen are killing everywhere, I never wanted to do this!"
"Calm down, where are you? What's your name?"
"I can't say my name! I have children to raise, if they find out I'm dead!" Peter Parker spoke at a rapid pace, "But I can give you an address. Manhattan Pier 827, the warehouse with a blue roof and yellow walls. All their goods for the whole month are there, and there are only four guns inside, you can wipe them out in one fell swoop tonight!"
"I need more clues, names, clients..."
"Babs is the boss now, and he's about to go see a big client. Damn it, they found me! Remember, Pier 827, don't sound the siren!"
Peter Parker hung up the phone directly, threw the phone into the sewer, and leaped into the night.
He knew Barnes too well; that detective's son had almost been shot by the Grass Stain Gang back then, and for this clue, he would definitely apply for a search warrant overnight and lead a raid.
Now, it was time to find a lawyer.
Peter Parker swung into Hell's Kitchen and familiarly pried open the window of Matt Murdock's apartment.
He had tracked Matt before and had long figured out the route of this building.
"Is anyone there?" Matt's defenseless voice came from the bedroom.
"Matt, we need to talk." Peter Parker deliberately changed his voice.
Matt walked into the living room holding a white cane, his hollow eyes staring at the position above Peter Parker's head.
Although he was blind, the detail of his ears slightly twitching betrayed his intention to be ready for battle at any time.
"If it's a robbery, please don't hurt me, I can't even protect myself." Matt showed a harmless smile.
Peter Parker sneered: "You're not blind, Matt Murdock."
Matt paused his movement: "What? Of course I am..."
"You're not blind. You can see, it's just that to you, the whole World looks like it's on fire."
The disguise was instantly torn apart. Matt threw his cane and lunged forward like a cheetah.
"I'm not here to fight!" Peter Parker dodged to the side and smoothly snatched the cane.
Matt's offense was fierce, his fist wind brushing past Peter Parker's cheek, terrifyingly precise.
Relying on his far-above-average reaction speed and some combat training, Peter Parker dodged and maneuvered, found an opportunity to grab Matt's leg, and flipped him onto the sofa.
"Help me completely wipe out the Grass Stain Gang." Peter Parker pinned him down, "They supply drugs to Kingpin, as long as you nail them in court, you can cut off Kingpin's supply chain for half a year."
Matt broke free, his eyes sharp: "How do you know my secret?"
"I looked at your medical records." Peter Parker lied without changing his expression, "I know that after losing your vision, your other senses became extremely acute. I deduce that you use sonar vision to perceive the World, and some scientists once used everyday sounds to map human models, showing that the human body looks like it's burning... I just pieced the clues together."
Matt was silent for a moment, stood up and adjusted his clothes: "You're a smart kid."
"Thank you."
"But also a clumsy liar." Matt tilted his head slightly, "I can hear your heartbeat, it's beating fast right now. I don't know if it's an adrenaline surge or because you're lying. But I don't believe you."
"I don't care." Peter Parker directly slapped the ledger onto the table, "These are all the transaction records of the Grass Stain Gang. Soon you will hear that Detective Barnes raided that warehouse. Use these evidence to fight for the qualification to prosecute, this can not only hit Kingpin's wallet, but also make your law firm famous in a single battle."
Matt groped to pick up the ledger, not flipping through it, but slightly turning his ear: "Is there no Braille version?"
"Foggy is not blind." Peter Parker retorted.
Matt put the ledger aside, not flipping through it, but slightly turning his ear.
He used the frequency of the heartbeat to firmly remember the characteristics of the uninvited guest in front of him.
"What on earth are you after?" Matt asked.
"The Grass Stain Gang is running amok on the streets, they should be cleaned up."
"Why you?"
"Why can't it be me?" Peter Parker walked to the window and pushed it open, "Enough people have died outside, if I can change the status quo, why not try? Can only the Police and superheroes save people?"
Without waiting for Matt to answer, Peter Parker leaped into the night sky.
"I am Spider-Man." His voice came from below, "See you later, Matt."
"No!" Matt rushed to the window and shouted, but only heard the cheerful whistling sound coming from the night wind, and couldn't help muttering to himself, "This city is getting crazier and crazier."
The next morning, Peter Parker sat in front of the TV, not even caring when Aunt May called him to eat breakfast.
"Breaking news," the female anchor looked solemn, "The Police raided and destroyed the large drug trafficking gang Grass Stain Gang in eastern Queens last night. Detective Barnes stated that he acted overnight based on a tip from a former gang member, seizing thousands of pounds of drugs and a large amount of weapons. At the same time, Matt Murdock from the Nelson and Murdock law firm has taken over the prosecution work of this case..."
Peter Parker turned off the TV, the corners of his mouth turning upward crazily.
Well done. Without wearing a battle suit, without relying on brute force, purely relying on intelligence and brains to bring down a gang, and casually tying Daredevil to his chariot. This was the correct way to open up as a behind-the-scenes player.
This good mood lasted until after school.
In English class, Mary Jane and Liz Allan noticed his abnormality and asked with concern. Peter Parker casually made up an excuse that Marcus's gang was busted and brushed it off.
Subsequently, the teacher called on Harry Osborn to answer the plot of 'Oedipus Rex'. As a result, this guy held it in for a long time, and only remembered the dog-blood trope of the protagonist "marrying his own mother". Peter Parker couldn't help it and mocked him on the spot, earning Harry Osborn's murderous look.
After school, as soon as Peter Parker walked to the parking lot, he was grabbed by the neck by Flash and dragged over. Harry Osborn brought a few members of the school football team to surround him tightly.
"Think you're smart, huh, Parker?" Harry Osborn gritted his teeth, "Making a fool of me in front of Mary Jane?"
"Osborn, I'm warning you, shut your mouth." Peter Parker's eyes turned cold.
Harry Osborn snorted, spat out a few extremely obscene dirty words, heavily insulted Mary Jane, and even bragged that he had shoved his tongue down her throat within a week.
Peter Parker's fists hardened, but Norman Osborn's cold face instantly flashed through his mind. If he started a fight now, Harry Osborn would definitely go home to complain, bringing about the crazy revenge of that supervillain father.
He took a deep breath, forcibly suppressed his anger, pushed away Flash who was blocking the way, and left without looking back. Harry Osborn shouted "Catch him" from behind, and Peter Parker easily shook off the pursuers with his speed advantage.
He went to the dojo to find Marcus, and the two chatted for a few words about the destruction of the Grass Stain Gang. However, just as he and Marcus were walking home together, a sharp pain suddenly hit the back of his head.
Spider-Sense went crazy warning him.
"Get down!" Peter Parker tackled Marcus to the ground.
Next second, a car roared past, several submachine guns reached out from the car windows, and bullets shattered the sidewalk with flying gravel.
"Long live the Grass Stain Gang! You bugs, just wait and see!" The people in the car laughed arrogantly and sped away.
