15: Chapter 15 The Tragedy of Local Hospitals
"Boss, is this outfit okay?"
Yang Fan had just come downstairs when he saw Jiang Lan already waiting for him at the elevator entrance.
Yang Fan looked her over. She was wearing a white camisole with a sheer white shirt over it, paired with light-colored slim-fit jeans and a pair of white dad shoes.
Her entire figure was on full display.
The outfit was very youthful.
Although it didn't look like an assistant's attire, it was certainly very pleasing to the eye.
"Hmm, it's fine."
"Let's go, to the hospital."
Yang Fan stated the location directly.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Yang Fan went straight to get his own physical examination.
"Boss, then I'll go get a physical too. Which items do I need to check?"
This question stunned Yang Fan. He hadn't told Jiang Lan to get a checkup; the girl must have misunderstood.
But since she had already brought it up, he might as well let her get one.
"Whatever, just do a pre-marital checkup."
Jiang Lan nodded and went for the checkup. Whatever the boss ordered, she would just follow.
Yang Fan smiled bitterly. This girl—other women would have bristled at the mention of a pre-marital checkup, but she went without a word.
Should he call her silly, or just silly!
Soon, both of their medical reports came out.
Jiang Lan's report was perfectly normal. Yang Fan hadn't expected that in this day and age, someone could still be a virgin after graduating from college!
However, Yang Fan's own report was not very optimistic.
It was the same result as when he had checked locally: kidney failure.
Their local hospitals either couldn't diagnose the illness or couldn't treat it once diagnosed. Sigh...
Jiang Lan had also snuck a peek at Yang Fan's report and was dumbfounded to see "kidney failure."
This was a notoriously fatal disease. She looked at Yang Fan, screaming internally, "No way, right? I just met someone who is good to me, and this happens?"
Was the straw she was holding onto going to disappear just like that?
Yang Fan had just heard the doctor say that if it developed into uremia, he would only have a few months to live. But if he received proper treatment and stayed in good health, dialysis or a kidney transplant could extend his life by ten years or more.
Jiang Lan looked at Yang Fan with eyes full of heartache. Perhaps the most terrifying thing for a person isn't death, but knowing when you are going to die and counting down to it.
"Boss, should we go to another hospital to check? Maybe it was a misdiagnosis?"
"It's fine, I'll just get treatment. Let's go."
Yang Fan's mindset was pretty good; after all, he had already been through this once.
He didn't need to earn money for his grandmother or to extend his own life anymore.
Besides, when it comes to illness, the more anxious you are, the faster it develops.
Yang Fan had dealt with hospitals for so long that he had seen too many people like that.
Most people can actually live for a long time if they receive proper treatment.
However, many people psych themselves out and scare themselves to death.
Jiang Lan watched Yang Fan's back, admiring him even more. He looked to be about her age, yet he was expressionless upon seeing the words "kidney failure" on his medical report.
How strong his heart must be to remain calm even if Mount Tai were to collapse before him.
Shouldn't a man be this emotionally stable?
When Yang Fan reached the hospital room door, he saw the department director leading the doctors on rounds, so he didn't go in.
He said to Jiang Lan: "In a moment, you will play the role of my girlfriend, understand?"
Jiang Lan nodded, reached out to take Yang Fan's hand, and wrapped her other arm around his.
"Is this okay? Brother!"
Yang Fan's mouth twitched—the feeling on his arm was actually quite nice!!
This girl didn't look like she knew nothing; she really understood a man's heart. If she were genuinely trying to deceive a man, who wouldn't be confused?
"It's fine, just play it by ear."
Seeing that the girl was also very smart, Yang Fan didn't give too many instructions, letting her improvise. After all, his family members weren't difficult people to get along with.
"Okay, Brother!"
The two walked into the ward together, and Yang Fan listened as the attending physician introduced the patient's condition to the director.
He looked at his grandmother; her complexion was clearly much better than a few days ago. A few days ago, she didn't even have the strength to speak, but now she had no problem talking.
It seems the most important thing in treating an illness is finding the cause. Before, they had blindly used medication, which had turned her white hair black, but the illness hadn't improved at all, only barely maintaining her condition.
It seems there is a serious problem with the distribution of medical resources!!
Good doctors are all in big hospitals, but how can many ordinary people afford to go to big hospitals?
At this time, the attending physician saw Yang Fan and asked: "Can the elderly woman give herself injections? From now on, she will need to administer her own insulin."
"She can't. I'll hire someone to come every day to do it. You all should just continue with the medication as planned."
Yang Fan said with a smile. His grandmother was afraid of needles; how could she dare to give herself an injection?
As for his father, it went without saying—if he could take care of himself, that would be a blessing.
The doctor nodded, and the group went to the next ward.
As for Yang Fan's grandmother, she probably hadn't even heard what the doctor said; she had been staring at Jiang Lan the whole time.
"Is this girl the one you're seeing?"
Jiang Lan let go of Yang Fan's hand, stepped forward to take the old lady's hand, and said: "Grandma, I'm Jiang Lan, Brother Fan's girlfriend!"
Just after saying that, Jiang Lan felt something was wrong. Why did the old lady look like she was about to cry?
She could only turn back and look at Yang Fan with a helpless expression.
Yang Fan patted her shoulder. "It's okay."
"Grandma, don't cry. I'm going to register the marriage with Jiang Lan in a few days. We're planning to start a business first, so we won't hold the wedding yet."
Yang Fan knew where his grandmother's worry lay, so he gave her some peace of mind first, then told her to focus on recovering and getting healthy.
Yang Fan's grandmother said while crying: "That's good. Once you have money, hurry up and get things done. Once you're married, even if I close my eyes, I will have no regrets."
Yang Fan stepped forward to wipe away his grandmother's tears. He knew something about this illness and had heard a bit from the doctor: with regular injections, as long as it didn't frequently cause complications from diabetes, there would be no life-threatening danger.
"Hmm, you haven't enjoyed life yet, what's the rush? You haven't even seen your great-grandchildren yet, how can you think about closing your eyes!!"
"I've earned a little money now. Once you are discharged and back home, I'll bring my sister over, and bring Gou Dan over too."
Yang Fan definitely couldn't let his grandmother lose her will to live. After all, people live on a single breath of spirit; if that spirit they've been holding onto loosens, they might not make it.
Bringing his sister and her daughter over to keep the old lady company would stop her from overthinking.
"Don't bother them. They have their own families. If your brother-in-law is at the mine and sends your sister over, he'll have to work less. Money is hard to earn!!"
"You don't need to worry about that. I'll reimburse them. You don't need to fret. Look at how your worrying has made your daughter look."
Jiang Lan, standing to the side, was a bit stunned. Yang Fan said he was doing a little business?
A "little business" worth billions?
And Yang Fan didn't seem to be a second-generation rich kid; his own family didn't even know what he did!!
