19: Chapter 19 Neurology Department, Urgent Rescue!
Su Ye fell into a deep sleep with a hint of worry.
A night without dreams.
...
Early the next morning.
Golden sunlight tore through the mist, shining upon the world.
Su Ye opened his eyes and looked out the window. The air was still a bit damp, but the mist had mostly dissipated. The sunlight appeared exceptionally golden. The entire city looked as if it had just been washed by a heavy rain, incredibly clean. The sky was unbelievably blue, and even the distant, usually gray buildings were washed clean to reveal their original colors.
Su Ye pushed open the window and took a deep breath.
The concentration of spiritual energy in the air had dropped significantly compared to during yesterday's white mist, but it was still higher than before the mist appeared. This indicated that yesterday's white mist wasn't a one-time release, but a permanent increase; the baseline concentration of spiritual energy had moved up a level, though ordinary people couldn't detect any difference.
To ordinary people, today was just a normal, sunny morning.
...
Walking on the way to the hospital, everything had returned to its usual calm.
Breakfast stalls were operating as usual, buses were crowded as usual, and office workers were hurrying as usual, as if yesterday's white mist had never appeared.
This left Su Ye feeling somewhat shocked.
He pulled out his phone and scrolled through it; news and posts about the white mist on the internet had largely disappeared. Yesterday's overwhelming short videos, discussion threads, and pleas for help had either been deleted or suppressed. Searching for keywords yielded almost nothing, leaving only the official statement from the Meteorological Bureau about the "superposition of radiation fog and advection fog" hanging there in isolation.
It was so clean that it felt as if someone had used an eraser to wipe yesterday off the internet.
Su Ye put away his phone, feeling a strong sense of disconnection. Yesterday, the screens were full of panic and questions, but today there was nothing, as if everyone had suffered collective amnesia.
But then again, it made sense.
Looking at the pedestrians hurrying along, each with their own worries and livelihoods.
Life must go on.
...
8:00 AM, Urology Department consultation room.
It was still the usual consultation session.
Su Ye assisted Zhang Yuanping with patients all morning, and his state was better than ever. The improvement brought by yesterday's Breathing Technique cultivation was all-encompassing—not just physical fitness, but even the agility and depth of his thinking had moved up a level.
For several cases, while Zhang Yuanping was still flipping through the examination reports, Su Ye already had a preliminary judgment in his heart. Not just a judgment, but even the subsequent examination plans and treatment ideas were arranged in his mind, ready for him to answer fluently as soon as Zhang Yuanping asked.
Zhang Yuanping appreciated this young man more and more. Several times, the look in his eyes when he watched Su Ye carried a sense of "how is this kid improving so fast?" but he didn't say much, only nodding a few more times when Su Ye answered correctly.
During the lunch break, Su Ye leaned back in his chair looking at his phone, an unconscious smile on his lips.
The small group of four from the Marathon had been very lively lately.
Wang Dandan posted all sorts of random things in the group every day: today's braised pork in the cafeteria was good, she was so sleepy on night shift tomorrow, a bizarre patient came to the department the day after—she broadcasted everything in detail. Wang Luo was her loyal hype man, replying to every message and often sending mysterious emojis, making Wang Dandan type out a string of "hahahahaha" in the group.
These two aren't going to start some "secret romance," are they?
Sister Su Bei would occasionally pop up to say a word, very gently, which was just her personality.
Su Ye himself rarely spoke; he was the cool and aloof type, occasionally replying with an "Mhm" or an emoji, which fit his persona as a powerful figure. However, this didn't stop the other three from mentioning him often—"Brother Su, what do you think?", "Su Ye, have you eaten today?", "Brother Su, are you working overtime again?"—making it so that every time Su Ye opened the group chat, there were a bunch of messages @-ing him.
Now life was quite interesting: simple, down-to-earth, and full of hope.
He just didn't know when this peace would be shattered.
...
At 2:00 PM, Su Ye was entering medical records when his phone suddenly rang.
It wasn't a group message, but a call.
Caller ID: Jiang Xiaoyue.
Su Ye picked up, and an angry voice immediately came through his ear.
"Su Ye! Did you blacklist me?!"
"No."
"Then why aren't you replying to my messages! I sent you seven WeChat messages and you didn't reply to a single one! I called three times and you didn't pick up! Did something happen to you!"
Su Ye scrolled through WeChat and found that there were indeed seven unread messages in Jiang Xiaoyue's chat box, spanning from three days ago to this morning. The content ranged from "the exam results are coming out soon, are you nervous?" to "are you still alive?", with the emotions gradually escalating.
He felt a bit guilty.
"Sorry, I've been too busy lately, I really didn't notice."
"Busy? What are you busy with? How can a Standardized Resident Trainee be this busy?" Jiang Xiaoyue's tone was annoyed, but more so worried. "What exactly has been going on with you lately? First you forgot the exam, and then it's like you vanished from the face of the earth. I was almost about to go to your hospital to find you!"
Jiang Xiaoyue had recently been transferred to another branch and hadn't seen Su Ye, so she was indeed very worried.
Su Ye didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Jiang Xiaoyue did care about him; he could feel that. From university to their master's degrees, as classmates for nearly ten years, she had always watched over him like a worrisome little sister, fearing something might happen to him.
It's just that there had been too many things to deal with lately, each of them monumental. All his energy had been poured into them, and he really had neglected Jiang Xiaoyue, whom he had known for nearly ten years.
"I'm really sorry, it's my fault. I've indeed been a bit busy lately, but nothing happened, don't worry."
"Really?"
"Really."
"Then have you been eating well lately? Have you been sleeping on time?"
"Yes, yes, yes, I have."
"Hmph." Jiang Xiaoyue's tone finally softened. "Then remember to reply to messages in the future, otherwise I really will go to your hospital to corner you."
"Understood, Doctor Jiang."
"Don't get cheeky with me!"
The call ended. Su Ye looked at Jiang Xiaoyue's profile picture on the screen, shook his head, and had a helpless smile on his lips.
He was becoming increasingly familiar with his identity after transmigrating.
These people and these relationships were gradually becoming his own.
Su Ye put down his phone and continued entering medical records.
The afternoon was peaceful and serene. Sunlight spilled through the consultation room window, casting a patch of warm yellow light on the floor. Occasionally, the sound of nurses' footsteps and patients' murmurs came from the corridor; everything was just as it usually was in the hospital.
Then his phone vibrated.
Su Ye glanced at the screen.
A group chat message.
Sent by Wang Dandan.
He opened it casually, but his expression suddenly changed slightly.
[Wang Dandan: Department of Neurology, emergency, urgent help!]
He snapped upright in his chair, his finger quickly pressing the screen. What was the situation?
