20: Chapter 20: Making a Move!

Su Ye's heart stirred slightly.

Wang Dandan wasn't the type to joke about such things; although she was often frivolous, she always had a sense of propriety. Something must have really happened.

Su Ye stood up and said to Zhang Yuanping, "Teacher Zhang, something's come up with my friend. I'm going over to take a look."

Zhang Yuanping waved his hand. "Go ahead."

Su Ye walked quickly out of the consultation room, through the corridor, and toward the Department of Neurology.

Before he even reached the door, he heard the sounds of a commotion.

It wasn't just ordinary noise; it was the kind of angry, aggressive shouting mixed with a woman's crying and the voices of others trying to intervene. It was a complete mess.

Su Ye quickened his pace, turned the corner at the end of the corridor, and saw a large crowd gathered at the entrance of the Department of Neurology's clinic area.

He squeezed through the crowd, his mind sharpening.

A medical dispute.

...

Such medical disputes weren't uncommon in hospitals.

Everyone who had worked in a hospital had seen it to some extent. At its mildest, it involved verbal abuse, smashing things, and blocking entrances with banners; at its most severe, it involved physical assault or even wounding doctors with weapons. Similar reports appeared in the news every so often, and they were disheartening to see.

Were there bad doctors? Yes.

Misdiagnosis, missed diagnosis, poor attitude, and accepting bribes—these things did exist; it couldn't be denied.

But more often than not, doctors and families were just looking at things from two different perspectives. Doctors saw the illness, the data, and the probabilities, while families saw their loved ones, the pain, and the fear. Neither side was wrong, but once communication broke down, the conflict would erupt like a volcano.

And in the end, those who bore the brunt of it all were often the most innocent.

Like now.

As Su Ye took in the scene, his gaze instantly darkened.

The target of the medical dispute wasn't Wang Dandan.

It was Sister Su Bei.

Sister Su Bei stood at the door of the consultation room. Her white coat was stained with a few drops of some unknown liquid, her face was deathly pale, and her eyes were red. Two tear tracks marked her face, and her lips were trembling, yet she was still trying her best to maintain a shred of composure.

Standing before her was a man in his early thirties. He was bald, heavily muscled, and had a partial tattoo on his neck. He clearly wasn't someone to be trifled with. At that moment, he was pointing right at Sister Su Bei's nose and cursing, his spittle flying onto her face.

"My mom was treated right here! Now she's lying in the ICU, and you're telling me it's not your responsibility?"

"I... I was only responsible for assisting with the records. I'm not the attending physician..." Sister Su Bei's voice was shaking. She tried to explain, but her voice was almost drowned out by the other man's roar.

"I don't care who the attending is! All I know is my mom is in the ICU. You think you can just run away after something happened?"

Su Ye's eyes narrowed slightly.

He scanned the surroundings. Several doctors and nurses from the Department of Neurology were standing back with various expressions—some showed sympathy, others looked down in silence. Not a single person stepped forward to speak up for Sister Su Bei.

Sister Su Bei was just a Standardized Resident Trainee.

A Standardized Resident Trainee rotating through the Department of Neurology, her job was to assist the attending physician with records, write lab slips, and run errands with specimens. She didn't even have prescribing authority, let alone the power to participate in core diagnostic or treatment decisions.

But now, she was facing the fury of the patient's family alone.

Su Ye understood.

Sister Su Bei had been pushed out as a shield.

The attending physician actually responsible for the treatment was nowhere to be found, leaving a Standardized Resident Trainee to take the heat. After all, if something went wrong, it would be the intern's fault; at worst, they'd write a self-reflection and be transferred out of the department, with no impact on the higher-ups.

Society is a treacherous place.

The hospital was no exception.

"I'm telling you, this isn't over today!" The bald man took a step forward. Sister Su Bei instinctively backed away until her back hit the wall, looking pitiful and with nowhere to run. "If you don't give me an explanation, I'll make sure you can't stay in this industry!"

Wang Dandan had rushed out at some point. Her small frame stood in front of Sister Su Bei, arms spread wide like a mother hen protecting her chick. Her face was full of fear, but she didn't retreat a single step.

"Don't be a bully! She's just a Standardized Resident Trainee! If you have a problem, go find the attending physician! You're so tall and strong, are you really picking on her?"

"Get lost!" The bald man shoved Wang Dandan aside. She stumbled a few steps and nearly fell, gritting her teeth.

Security had arrived. Two uniformed guards were trying to control the situation.

However, the man's emotions were becoming increasingly volatile.

"Ah!" the crowd suddenly screamed.

The bald man pulled a knife from behind his waist. It was a folding knife, its blade glinting coldly under the fluorescent lights.

The security guard's hand froze in mid-air. He clearly hadn't expected the man to pull a knife and was stunned for a moment. The surrounding crowd recoiled several steps as if they'd been shocked, their expressions full of terror.

Holding the knife, the bald man's eyes were bloodshot, like a cornered beast.

"Something happened to my mom, I'll make you all die!"

Everyone cried out in alarm!

At that critical moment!

"Stop right there."

An angry voice rang out from the side. A hand suddenly reached out from the crowd like a blur. With a sharp crack, it firmly gripped the bald man's wrist holding the knife.

Su Ye frowned, his heart filled with anger. Sister Su Bei had been pushed out as a shield, and the unreasonable family member had actually drawn a knife, threatening Sister Su Bei's life. Behind him, Sister Su Bei and Wang Dandan were pale, but they both breathed a sigh of relief when they saw Su Ye arrive.

"Who are you... are you a doctor too?"

The bald man struggled. He was quite strong; his muscles tensed and veins bulged as he tried to break free, but his wrist felt as if it were cast in concrete, unmoving.

Su Ye remained expressionless. A sharp glint flashed in his eyes as he tightened his grip.

Crack.

Su Ye was controlled; it wasn't the sound of bone breaking, but the subtle noise made when a joint is pressed to its limit. However, the sound was enough to make the bald man's face instantly contort.

"Ah!"

The knife slipped from his hand, hitting the floor with a metallic clang.

Su Ye's right foot kicked out simultaneously. It wasn't heavy, but it accurately struck the back of the man's knee. The bald man lost his balance and crashed to the ground, his back hitting the corridor floor with a dull thud.

Su Ye had held back.

If he hadn't, that kick to the abdomen with his current strength would have been enough to rupture the man's liver or even kill him.

"You, you..."

The bald man lay on the ground, grimacing in pain. He tried to scramble up, but the moment he looked up and met Su Ye's gaze, his body suddenly froze.

Su Ye stood before him, looking down with a sharp gaze. An indescribable aura radiated from him, like a bucket of ice water poured over the man's head, making the hair on the bald man's neck stand on end.

What a terrifying young man...

In just an instant, that aura vanished, so quickly that the people around thought they had imagined it.

Su Ye looked down at the bald man on the floor. His voice wasn't loud, but every word was crystal clear.

"I can understand how you feel. Anyone would be anxious and angry if a loved one was in the ICU. That's only human."

"But you've got the wrong person."

Su Ye glanced at Sister Su Bei to reassure her, then looked back at the bald man.

"She's a Standardized Resident Trainee. To put it bluntly, she's an intern. Her job in this department is to assist with records and run errands. She has no prescribing authority or decision-making power over diagnosis and treatment. Your mother's treatment plan wasn't set by her, the medication wasn't prescribed by her, and the surgery wasn't performed by her. The 'incident' you're talking about has nothing to do with her."

"You're charging at a twenty-four-year-old girl with a knife. How do you think your mother in the ICU would feel if she saw this?"

The bald man opened his mouth to say something, but meeting Su Ye's gaze, he swallowed his words.

The security guards finally snapped out of it. Two of them hauled the bald man up from the floor, while several others who had rushed over surrounded them and kicked the knife aside.

"Sir, please come with us."

The bald man didn't struggle anymore. As he was led away by the guards, he instinctively turned his head away to avoid Su Ye's gaze. It wasn't that he felt he was wrong, but that the young man was simply too frightening.

Silence returned to the corridor.
