29: Chapter 29 Intelligence Investigation

At this moment, the night was hazy.

Dark clouds in the sky obscured most of the light.

A platoon of men silently crept to a spot very close to the Airport.

"Old Hei, don't run so fast! Are you not afraid of dying?"

"Why are you acting like you've been injected with adrenaline!"

A burly man with a thick beard, holding a submachine gun, took advantage of the night and quickly rushed into a trench not far in front of the Airport's perimeter fence.

He poked his head out to look, only to discover that the perimeter fence was quite high.

He had intended to run out and climb over the fence, but there were searchlights not far away.

The searchlight swept over, nearly spotting him.

Fortunately, he dropped to the ground instantly and was not discovered.

After the searchlight moved away, he immediately retreated back into the ditch.

However, the ditch was filled with black, filthy, and foul-smelling sewage; Old Hei frowned as he stepped into it.

Even though he knew it was a game, he still found the feeling of crouching in a ditch very uncomfortable.

Several people walked over from the side, and the leader complained in a low voice.

"Old Hei, I told you not to run so fast; we were almost discovered."

"Hey, Old Liu, stop talking. Look at this fence; it's damn high. It won't be easy to climb over."

"We're just here to scout; do you want to rush in and fight them?" Liu Yang looked at Old Hei speechlessly.

He still valued his life; with only about twenty of them, rushing in would be suicide.

"Just do what we came here to do; let's not take unnecessary risks."

Liu Yang was more prudent; they could conduct their mission from the perimeter, so there was no need to rush inside.

"Fine," Old Hei replied helplessly upon hearing Liu Yang's words.

Afterward, they slowly moved forward in the foul-smelling ditch, using binoculars to observe the Japanese sentry towers and fortification layouts inside the Airport.

"Good heavens, the Little Devils' firepower configuration is truly luxurious. There's a heavy machine gun every few paces. If we had this kind of setup, we'd be slaughtering them like crazy!" Old Hei marveled while looking through his binoculars.

Liu Yang, listening to Old Hei's muttering beside him, looked grim.

"This is going to be tricky. It feels like the difficulty of launching a frontal assault is quite high. How many lives would we have to pile up to break through this kind of firepower?" Liu Yang frowned slightly.

"I heard the other regiment is planning to attack through the Sewer; maybe that will work," Old Hei said, waving his hand.

He had learned about Wang Ye's battle plan as soon as it was discussed.

It was just that he felt attacking through the Sewer was a bit unreliable.

What if the Japanese soldiers knew about it and were waiting to ambush them? Wouldn't that mean death for everyone who went in?

It would be better to just charge from the front.

If they attacked from both sides, perhaps they could break through.

After scouting the main attack point, Old Hei and his team figured out the firepower configuration and sentry points on this side.

Afterward, they immediately returned to the unit's base and told Old Kui all the information they had gathered.

After learning about the firepower configuration, Old Kui decided to select a few members of the Suicide Squad to rush up first and cut open the barbed wire fence.

At the same time, he would bring over the Artilleryman to suppress those heavy firepower points.

He also needed to select some snipers to take out the searchlights on the enemy sentry towers the moment the attack began.

Otherwise, they would be easily spotted in the dark night.

Besides that, they also needed to send men immediately to destroy the enemy's radio station to prevent the enemy from requesting naval gun support.

Otherwise, with the naval guns there, they wouldn't be able to break in at all.

Old Kui had witnessed the power of naval guns; a single shell could leave a crater several meters wide in the ground.

On the other side, Wang Ye also sent men into the Sewer near the Airport.

Then, they proceeded to scout along the Sewer toward the Airport.

However, unlike Old Kui, he went along to scout in person.

The viewers in the livestream room all felt that he was looking for unnecessary trouble.

But Wang Ye didn't care.

He considered this environment a way to adapt in advance.

After all, if it was viable, he would still have to enter the Sewer.

Moving along the pitch-black, foul-smelling Sewer, Wang Ye held an oil lamp and moved forward by its light.

He held a map of the Sewer in his hand.

Fortunately, although the Sewer layout was intricate, there was a marked route that led all the way through, so he wouldn't get lost wandering around.

Wang Ye didn't know where the map came from, but as long as it was useful, that was all that mattered.

He didn't know how long they had been walking before they arrived at a Sewer manhole beneath the Airport.

Looking at the iron plaque on the Sewer wall, the blackened, rusted writing was still clearly visible.

It was clearly engraved with the words "Hongkou Airport".

Wang Ye immediately ordered someone to go up and investigate.

A Chinese Soldier endured the sticky filth on his hands and the stench rushing toward him as he climbed up the iron ladder.

Gently pushing open the manhole cover, he took a look around.

He saw Japanese soldiers patrolling.

But the Japanese soldier didn't notice anything unusual about the manhole cover.

Suddenly, a Japanese soldier walked toward his direction.

Seeing this, he immediately and slowly lowered the manhole cover.

Then, he returned to the bottom of the Sewer.

"Commander, it is indeed inside the Airport; I saw several Japanese soldiers patrolling," he reported to Wang Ye immediately.

Upon hearing this, an excited smile appeared on Wang Ye's face.

"Very good. Let's head back now."

As he spoke, he quickly turned back.

While heading back, he marked the path along the way.

Soon, they returned to the unit's temporary base.

When they saw the group emerge, covered in filth and reeking of a foul stench.

The surrounding Chinese Soldiers who were waiting couldn't help but take a few steps back.

There was no helping it; the smell from the Sewer was just too foul.

Moreover, it was currently raining, and the rainwater had washed the filth from the ground into the Sewer.

Wang Ye also couldn't stand the smell on his body and hurried to find water to rinse off.

"Brother Wang, you really are looking for unnecessary trouble."

"What kind of commander goes into the Sewer to scout in person?"

"Brother Wang, do you still want to lead the charge later?"

"You're already a commander; can't you just sit in the command room? Why did you have to go into the Sewer?"

The audience in the livestream room couldn't quite understand why Wang Ye had to enter the Sewer in person.

Wang Ye didn't explain to the stream comments, because his personality wasn't the type to sit idly in the rear.

He preferred to charge forward with passion.

At the same time, he understood one principle: if he, as a commander, didn't dare to charge and only knew how to hide in the rear, how could his subordinates be united with him?

By going along to scout, he had directly demonstrated his stance.

Of course, he wasn't stupid; he wouldn't risk his life unnecessarily.

Just now, he only let the soldier go up to scout after ensuring it was safe.

If they were discovered, he would be able to escape.

After feeling that the smell on his body had dissipated quite a bit, he immediately sent someone to notify the brigade headquarters with this information.

Independent Brigade temporary Command Post.

Brigade Commander Li Zheng looked at the map in front of him, his brows still furrowed as he pondered how to fight.

Although he had previously discussed it with Wang Ye, he still wanted to find a better method in his heart.

At this moment, the messenger sent by Wang Ye and the messenger sent by Old Kui arrived at the temporary Command Post at the same time.
