251: Chapter 251 The Special House

Soon, everyone was settled into their respective houses.

Lin Xiao and Su Yu, along with Xiao Yuan, moved into the best house among them.

Saying it was the best was a stretch; it was just slightly larger than the others, with two rooms inside.

One room for Lin Xiao, one for Su Yu, and Xiao Yuan could sleep wherever she wanted.

The two rooms were separated only by a door.

Apart from being slightly larger, the facilities inside were much the same—very old and worn, clearly unoccupied for a long time.

Fortunately, the Villagers had prepared some new bedding for them, so the dilapidated wooden beds wouldn't be too uncomfortable to sleep on.

Just as they were tidying up their things in the room, they suddenly heard some Villagers whispering outside.

"It's not really appropriate for the Village Chief to assign this room to them, is it?"

"I think so too. After all, they are guests who have come from afar."

"Sigh, should we go and talk to the Village Chief?"

"..."

Hearing these words, Lin Xiao and Su Yu couldn't help but prick up their ears.

Judging by what they meant, could there be something wrong with this house?

At this moment, the Village Chief's voice was heard.

"What are you all whispering about here?"

The Village Chief said as he glanced inside the house, "Oh, it's fine. They even managed to make a Yellow Weasel cry from anger; they are capable people. Perhaps they can help the village solve the problem with this house."

"So that's how it is! No wonder!"

"That's a relief, that's a relief."

"..."

After hearing the Village Chief's words, the Villagers seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.

They didn't say anything more.

Su Yu hurriedly found Lin Xiao.

"A-Xiao, did you hear that? What should we do?"

"I heard it."

Lin Xiao leaned against the wooden bed and said indifferently, "At worst, it's just more superstitious nonsense like that Yellow Weasel. No need to worry."

Seeing Lin Xiao's attitude, Su Yu didn't expect much from him.

Although she wasn't going to be scared by a few words, as a lawyer, she had always cared deeply about uncovering the truth.

Pretending not to know anything was certainly not her style.

Since there was nothing for her to do during the day anyway, she began to investigate on her own.

First, she checked the corners of the room to see if there was anything suspicious.

For example, residual bloodstains, last words left by victims, or talismans for Exorcism...

However, she found nothing.

The house must have been tidied up beforehand; there was only a bit of dust.

Since she couldn't find any clues inside the house, she decided to ask the surrounding Villagers.

Su Yu wandered around the village by herself.

The village was not big; she walked from the east end to the west end, and then back from the west end to the east.

When she saw groups of aunties gathered together, she quietly moved closer to listen.

Along the way, she heard no fewer than twenty pieces of gossip.

These included whose dog bit whose chicken to death, whose cat was meowing all day long, seemingly in heat.

And whose son came back to visit relatives a few days ago and inadvertently showed off the watch on his wrist, seemingly having made a fortune in the city...

Yet, there was absolutely no news about that house.

After thinking it over, she decided it was better to just ask directly.

But just as she was planning to mingle with the aunties here and slowly extract clues, Lin Xiao called.

"Third Sister, where did you run off to? The locals have prepared 'pig-slaughter feast' dishes, come and eat quickly!"

"..."

Su Yu rubbed her already empty stomach.

Between the truth and good food, she chose the latter.

Anyway, the truth would always be there, but the 'pig-slaughter feast' would get cold if she didn't eat it now.

...

After finishing the meal, the sky had gradually darkened.

The people in the village went to bed early; by seven or eight o'clock, they had all returned to their own homes.

Watching TV, tidying up, and getting ready to rest.

Su Yu no longer had the opportunity to look for clues.

With no other options, she set her sights on Lin Xiao again.

"A-Xiao, after this whole day, did you notice anything unusual?"

"Huh?"

Lin Xiao only reacted after a moment, "Sister, are you still obsessing over this house? How about I go find the Village Chief and have him switch us to another one!"

"No!"

Su Yu firmly refused.

She just wanted to know the truth, not because she was actually afraid of anything.

As a lawyer, even though she had seen many bizarre things, she was still a materialist.

"A-Xiao, just use your divination to figure out what happened here! See if it's haunted, or if a murder occurred!"

"Sigh, alright."

Seeing Su Yu's serious and persistent look, Lin Xiao had no choice but to pretend to perform a divination.

At the same time, he asked the system in his mind. Seeing that the system didn't answer, he used the Bagua Technique.

But after calculating back and forth, he didn't find anything explosive.

Let alone anything about being haunted or someone having died.

He honestly told Su Yu his conclusion.

Su Yu's brows furrowed even tighter, "No ghosts, no murders... that's too strange!"

"Forget it, forget it. Let's rest early today; maybe we'll know by tonight."

Lin Xiao was truly exhausted, so he crawled straight into the quilt.

Su Yu nodded silently, "I suppose that's all we can do."

Unexpectedly, Lin Xiao's offhand remark became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

At night, they really found out where the problem with the house lay.

There were tons of mosquitoes here!

Furthermore, the roof leaked and the windows were drafty.

Sleeping on the antique-like wooden bed, whenever they moved even slightly, it would creak and groan.

Listening carefully, there seemed to be the rustling sounds of insects mixed in as well.

The three of them hadn't prepared any mosquito repellent when they arrived, and the Villagers hadn't provided them with mosquito nets either.

They spent the whole night in a battle of wits and courage against the mosquitoes.

Accompanied by the rattling sound of the wind blowing against the windows.

It was hard to say if there were ghosts here, but they were almost turning into vengeful spirits themselves.

They had expected to get a good night's sleep in the peaceful countryside, but they ended up staying awake until dawn.

"Sister, it's my fault. If I had known it would be like this, I should have investigated it to the end with you! I should have insisted that the Village Chief switch us to a house without mosquitoes."

Lin Xiao had dark circles under his eyes, his eyes filled with endless regret.

"Sigh."

Su Yu just sighed softly.

Having not slept well for two consecutive nights, her gaze had become somewhat dull.

Of the three, the one with the most energy was Xiao Yuan.

As a child, she naturally had much more energy than the adults.

Her little face had been listless, but when the Villagers nearby started a fire to cook breakfast and the aroma of food drifted in, Xiao Yuan suddenly perked up.

"Forget it, let's go eat first."

Lin Xiao sighed softly.

They already hadn't slept well; they couldn't have a bad meal too.

The three of them went out after washing up.

To provide them with meals, the village had set up a fire to cook in a separate small courtyard, with tables and chairs laid out, just like a makeshift canteen.

This was where they had eaten the 'pig-slaughter feast' yesterday.

As soon as they arrived at the courtyard, the three of them noticed that everyone looked listless.

Their arms and legs were covered in red mosquito bites.

Lin Xiao and Su Yu exchanged glances.

Could it be that the special nature of their house wasn't because of the mosquitoes?
