Chapter 98 Doing good deeds and accumulating merit
Jiang Chen and the other person followed the young woman onto the tram, which headed toward the city center.
By the time they got off, the two were already very close to the Yasukuni Shrine.
As they were nearing their destination, Jia He could finally no longer contain his curiosity and asked Jiang Chen.
"Junior Martial Uncle, what exactly are we going to do at the Yasukuni Shrine? We aren't going there to sightsee, are we?"
Jiang Chen glanced at him with a puzzled look, seemingly curious as to how he could come up with such a bizarre guess.
"Didn't I tell you before? We're going to do good deeds and accumulate Karma."
"But what kind of Karma can you get from that place? Surely you don't mean setting it on fire, right?"
"You'll know when we get there."
Not far from the Yasukuni Shrine, the road was already bustling with many tourists coming and going.
Jia He even saw some people taking their young children along to visit.
He had heard before that for the Japanese people who visited the Yasukuni Shrine, it wasn't considered a typical sightseeing trip.
It was more like a form of worship, a pilgrimage; they did not believe that the spirits enshrined within were war criminals, but rather national heroes.
Yet, the vast majority of them refused to acknowledge the atrocities committed against China in the past, and instead condemned China's current oppression of them.
Since they didn't acknowledge those actions, what exactly made those war criminals heroes in their eyes?
Jia He thought that this nation was just like that: self-contradictory, unable to justify itself, always putting itself in the position of a victim, understanding minor principles but lacking great righteousness, and fixating on petty matters while lacking great virtue.
Upon approaching the Yasukuni Shrine, the first thing they encountered was a torii gate, followed by a long stone path, and a giant boulder engraved with the four Chinese characters for "Yasukuni Shrine."
Below it, some people were taking photos with the boulder as if on a pilgrimage.
Jiang Chen only felt it was somewhat of an eyesore.
Walking further inside, they passed through several gates.
When they reached the area near the worship hall, the young woman smiled and said, "This is the Yasukuni Shrine. If you two want to visit, you can go into the worship hall inside, but there is an admission fee; it costs five thousand yen for a visit."
Jia He used a translation app to translate this for Jiang Chen.
"Tell her to wait here. We'll be out in a moment, and we'll still need her to guide us later."
Jia He re-translated Jiang Chen's words for the young woman.
The young woman hesitated, but looking at their attire and demeanor, they didn't seem like the type to skip out on payment.
So she whispered, "Alright, I'll wait for you here, but please be quick."
Jiang Chen led the way toward the worship hall, with Jia He following behind.
He asked, "Junior Martial Uncle, are we really going in?"
"If we don't go in, how can we do good deeds?"
Jiang Chen walked into the worship hall, and a staff member wearing ritual priestly robes approached them.
"Are you two here to visit the heroic spirits of the warriors?"
But upon seeing Jia He using a translation app to translate for Jiang Chen, the staff member became somewhat uneasy.
Especially upon hearing the familiar language from Jia He, he asked in a very broken, hesitant Chinese: "Are you, Chinese?"
Chinese people coming to visit the Yasukuni Shrine was a massive piece of shocking news.
Had there been any in the past?
Yes, but very few. Aside from some Japan-worshipping individuals, most came with hatred and a specific purpose, and quite a few had come into conflict with their staff.
There was even one person who, years ago, almost rushed into the main ritual hall and set a fire in the outer hall.
And hindered by China's strength, they ultimately had to let the person go, and this incident became the greatest disgrace of the Yasukuni Shrine.
So now, the staff at the Yasukuni Shrine were vigilant and disgusted whenever they saw Chinese people.
The people of that country were simply too lacking in manners; visiting someone else's home and actually starting a fire!
If this were in their island nation, such a thing would be impossible!
"If you want to visit the shrine, please pay the admission fee. If you are not visiting, please leave. Also, photography is prohibited here!"
Seeing Jia He gesturing with his phone, the staff member barked fiercely.
"We are not here to visit; we are here to do good deeds."
Hearing this, the staff member was stunned and instinctively asked, "What good deeds?"
There was not a trace of a smile on Jiang Chen's face, only the killing intent and coldness before performing a good deed.
"Of course, it's to send the Japanese ghosts here to the afterlife."
The staff member was stunned again, as he didn't quite understand the meaning of some of the words in Jiang Chen's sentence.
But hearing Jiang Chen's tone, he knew this was another person looking for trouble!
"Baka! Leave here immediately, or you will be deported!"
Hearing the staff member's shouting, several other staff members rushed over upon hearing the noise, staring at Jiang Chen and the other with hostile expressions.
Jia He was already prepared; he was just waiting for Jiang Chen to give the word to immediately take these few people down.
However, Jiang Chen did not pay any attention to these staff members, but instead looked at the tourists who hadn't left yet and were looking over with curiosity.
He said in the American language, "I'll give you three minutes to leave immediately, otherwise, you will bear the consequences!"
The scene was noisy and his voice wasn't loud, but it reached everyone's ears clearly.
Some people understood and left in a panic.
Some people didn't understand, but those nearby who did explained it to them, so they also left right after.
These people were afraid of trouble; they were just here to sightsee and didn't want to get involved in any mess.
But there were still some who, even after hearing Jiang Chen's warning, remained standing in place, unmoved.
Some even wore provocative expressions.
"Chinese? An inferior race. It's just a pity that our ancestors didn't wipe out all the Chinese back then? Oh ho ho ho!"
The staff members also had hostile looks, starting to take out batons to drive the two of them away.
Watching the group of people walking toward them, Jiang Chen slowly took the Magical Artifact longsword from Jia He's hand.
Then, amidst the astonished gazes of the crowd, he slowly drew a gleaming, sharp sword.
The staff members moving forward paused, somewhat at a loss.
And seeing that Jiang Chen had really pulled out a controlled weapon, some tourists were scared, so they quickly ran outside.
But there were still some tourists who were currently staring at Jiang Chen with fierce expressions.
Among them was the person who had previously insulted them.
"Hmph, I don't believe he really dares to make a move, just two East Asian sick—"
Pfft!
The sword light flashed with lightning speed, and before anyone else could react, a head was sent flying high into the air.
The face still seemed to retain the mockery from before death.
Everyone else was stunned, forgetting how to speak or breathe for a moment.
Until the blood from the cranial cavity sprayed high into the air, splashing onto the faces and clothes of some people.
A moment later—
"Ahhh!"
A scream capable of shattering eardrums suddenly erupted, but it immediately fell silent, and then another head flew up, though this time it was a woman's head.
Advising them to leave earlier had already been his greatest mercy; those who remained here all deserved to die!
Jia He's gaze was dazed, while those staff members were terrified, as they hadn't expected that there would actually be someone who dared to kill people here!
