149: Chapter 149 It was another quiet night.
It was another quiet night.
The chirping of insects in the courtyard was intermittent.
Qin Ming was curled up in a rattan rocking chair on the porch, swaying back and forth with the night breeze.
A glass of lemonade with ice cubes sat on the small table beside him.
Emma was squatting on the steps, a branch in her hand, intently poking at an anthill on the ground.
She turned her head, glanced at Qin Ming who was lying in the rocking chair with his eyes half-closed, and gave a serious evaluation: "Brother, you look very peaceful right now, just like those old grandpas sunbathing at the entrance of Chinatown."
Qin Ming didn't argue; he was indeed very comfortable.
Because even if he did nothing, points were still continuously rolling into his mind.
[Ding! Believer Sam Winchester has killed a low-level evil demon, Wendigo. Points +5.]
[Ding! Believer Johnny Blaze has judged an evil spirit. Points +10.]
[Ding! Prisoner Bi and Prisoner Esther have killed an extra-dimensional creature. Points +50.]
The crisp electronic sound was like the most wonderful lullaby in the world.
The Winchester Brothers, in their search for their missing father, investigated supernatural phenomena all along the way; every ghost or monster they encountered would turn into points.
As for Johnny, he spent every night riding his motorcycle that blazed with Hellfire, roaming the world.
He could collect points just by lying down.
Qin Ming sank deeper into the rocking chair and took a sip of the ice water.
Calculating the time, it had been exactly two years since he was adopted by Old Robert.
Over those two years, Old Robert remained a dutiful single father, leaving early and returning late every day, firmly believing that his son and daughter were the most well-behaved and obedient children.
Emma threw away the branch in her hand, patted the dust off her palms, and skipped over to the rocking chair, resting her chin on her hands atop the armrest.
"Brother, tomorrow is Halloween." Excitement sparkled in Emma's large eyes. "How are we going to spend Halloween this year?"
Qin Ming glanced at her.
In the world of ordinary people, Halloween was nothing more than children going door-to-door for candy and adults wearing cheap plastic costumes to drink and party.
But in a world with significant occult weight, it meant something else.
"Halloween, huh." A cold curve formed at the corner of Qin Ming's mouth. "That's definitely the day when all sorts of demons and ghosts come out in force to meet their quotas.
The Yin energy is at its peak, the seals are at their weakest, and all kinds of monsters and freaks will flock to the human world to join the fun."
Emma wasn't scared at all; instead, her eyes lit up. "Wow, that's great! We can have a real blast!"
To her, this wasn't called danger; it was called the buffet being open.
"Mm, we'll see," Qin Ming rubbed her head. "We'll see where there's some action when the time comes."
The next day, school cafeteria.
Lunch break.
Qin Ming sat by the window with his meal tray.
Wednesday sat opposite him, and Jennifer walked over with a vegetable salad and sat next to Qin Ming.
At that moment, Emma was using a fork to try and arrange the carrots on her plate into the shape of a skull.
The Halloween atmosphere had already swept through the entire school.
Cheap jack-o'-lanterns and low-quality spider webs were hung everywhere in the hallways.
"What are you planning to be for the Halloween parade tonight?" Jennifer poked a piece of lettuce with her fork and looked at Qin Ming.
"The Holy Son."
"Wow." Jennifer smiled. "That really suits your vibe."
"What about you?" Qin Ming asked back.
"An elf." Jennifer lowered her head slightly, her slender fingers tucking a stray hair behind her ear. "The kind that lives deep in the forest and can talk to insects."
This was the truth. Since she actually could communicate with insects, she didn't even need special effects to play an elf; she could just be herself.
Qin Ming nodded and turned to look at Wednesday sitting opposite him.
"And you?"
Wednesday looked up expressionlessly, her knife and fork still dripping with red meat juices.
"An oppressed Native American." Her voice had no inflection. "I intend to give those self-important descendants of Puritans a bit of primal shock at the party tonight."
Jennifer was silent for two seconds. She knew that given Wednesday's personality, this so-called "shock" most likely referred to actual gunpowder explosions or some kind of excruciating family torture device.
Finally, Qin Ming turned his gaze to Emma, who was still fiddling with her carrots.
"What about you, little one?"
Emma looked up and gave an extremely sweet smile, revealing two cute little canine teeth.
"I'm going to be the Headless Horseman!"
Jennifer smiled and stroked her hair. "Sounds cool. Are you going to wear one of those special rigs that hides your head inside the clothes?"
Emma tilted her head, her smile becoming even more radiant.
"No. Brother said it has to be realistic. So I plan to go out on the street, chop off a real head, and carry it in my hand."
The air at the dining table went silent for a brief moment.
Jennifer's smile froze on her face. She looked at Emma, then at Qin Ming.
She tried to find evidence on Qin Ming's face that "this child is joking."
But Qin Ming just calmly took a sip of juice.
Wednesday, quite rare for her, stopped her meat-cutting motion, and for once, a flicker of appreciation flashed in her eyes.
"That's a good idea," Wednesday evaluated. "If you need a suitable bone cleaver, I can lend you the one my great-grandfather used."
"Thank you, Sister!" Emma nodded happily.
Jennifer sighed and decided not to dwell on the topic; she really couldn't tell if these two were using dark humor or stating an actual criminal plan.

Halloween Night
"Your Headless Horseman costume is amazing, honey!" Old Robert was half-kneeling on the floor in the entryway, holding a digital camera and snapping photos of Emma. "Look at the texture of this armor, and the realistic fake blood on the neck—it's perfect!"
Emma was wearing an extremely exquisite medieval black knight's outfit, holding an empty pumpkin basket in both hands.
She gave Old Robert an incredibly sweet smile, showing her two sharp little canine teeth.

"Thanks, Daddy!"
In reality, she was annoyed because she hadn't found a perfect head at all, so she had to settle for carrying a stupid pumpkin.
Qin Ming walked down the stairs.
He wore a well-tailored, pure black high-collared suit, without any redundant plastic Halloween props.
With just a thought, that golden halo, seemingly solid, silently hovered behind his head, radiating a divine majesty that made it impossible to look at directly.
He looked like a cold Holy Son who had just descended to the human world.
"Wow, Qin, where did you buy that light-up thing behind your head?" Old Robert's eyes widened in surprise. "I can't even see a wire. Has levitation technology become this advanced?"
"Found it on Amazon, it's an import," Qin Ming BS-ed casually.
"So cool! Have a happy Halloween, you two, and stay safe!"
After saying goodbye to Old Robert, Qin Ming led Emma out of the house.
