60: Chapter 60 Thunderous Methods
Previously, under Lord Qinling's instructions, Bengbu hurried out.
This time it ran even farther than before, visiting every place it hadn't been to before one by one.
Its tongue whipped through the water with a whooshing sound, calling over every monster it could summon.
Fish, shrimp, crabs, and a few morphed sea snakes followed behind Bengbu, swimming in a group toward the Underwater Temple.
Finally, Bengbu led this procession to the shallow seabed, arriving before the Underwater Temple.
The monsters behind Bengbu also saw the shimmering, jewel-adorned temple before them.
But their gazes swept past the temple, looking straight at the massive corpse of the Little Li Dragon behind it.
The remains of the Little Li Dragon lay sprawled across the reef, its dozens of zhang-long dragon body glowing with a cold, silvery-white light in the dimness.
Some monsters that had never seen a dragon widened their eyes and remained motionless.
And some monsters that had seen the Little Li Dragon before found it even harder to believe what was before their eyes.
That overbearing Fourth-Turn monster, the Little Li Dragon, actually died just like that?
And it died right here!
The monsters all caught the scent of dragon meat, and saliva seeped from the corners of their mouths.
Bengbu cleared its throat, waved its tongue, and spoke in a booming voice.
"Monsters, do you all see it? This behind us is the Fourth-Turn monster, the Little Li Dragon!"
"Surely there are quite a few monsters among you who fled elsewhere precisely because the Little Li Dragon went mad."
Bengbu's tongue pointed at the Little Li Dragon's dragon corpse as it chattered endlessly.
"And now, you no longer need to flee!"
"Because this Fourth-Turn Little Li Dragon is already dead!"
"Surely there must be monsters wondering at this moment, who killed the Little Li Dragon?"
Bengbu's tongue turned to point at the shimmering, jewel-adorned Underwater Temple.
"That's right, the Little Li Dragon was slain by a deity named Lord Qinling!"
"Lord Qinling saw the Little Li Dragon causing chaos and could not bear to see the creatures of the seabed suffer, so he drew his sword and slew the Little Li Dragon!"
"A single sword strike, just one strike, cleaved it from head to tail!"
Bengbu's tongue pointed at the gruesome wound on the Little Li Dragon's corpse, raising its voice even higher.
"Lord Qinling slew this Little Li Dragon and returned peace to the East China Sea!"
"Not only that, Lord Qinling also said that this dragon meat can be shared with you to eat! But—"
It paused, its tongue pointing back at the shimmering, jewel-adorned temple as it said,
"You must offer incense first! Burn incense to Lord Qinling every day and worship him devoutly before you can get a share of the dragon meat!"
"But if you don't worship devoutly or properly offer incense, you won't get any dragon meat to eat!"
The newly arrived monsters were quite pleased upon hearing these words, and some wagged their tails and swam toward the temple gates.
But one sea snake did not move.
It coiled on the reef, its body a good deal longer than the rest of the monsters, pitch-black all over, its scales shimmering with a cold light in the dimness.
It was a peak Second-Turn monster, only a step away from the Third-Turn.
Among all the monsters gathered on this reef, its strength was one of the strongest.
It looked at the dragon corpse, its vertical pupils reflecting that patch of silver-white.
Then it moved. Instead of swimming toward the temple gate, it bypassed Bengbu and swam straight toward the Little Li Dragon's dragon corpse.
Noticing this sea snake's abnormal movement, Bengbu's tongue suddenly stiffened, its body swaying as it blocked the sea snake's path.
"Stop! Didn't I just state the rules?"
"You must offer incense first before you can receive a share of the dragon meat!"
The sea snake lowered its head, those vertical pupils staring at this mere mid-Second-Turn Clam Spirit, its mouth slowly parting to reveal the sharp fangs inside.
"Rules? Whose rules?"
Its voice was full of disdain.
"On this East China Sea Seabed, it has always been survival of the fittest!"
"A mid-Second-Rank trash like you is also worthy of talking to me about rules?"
Hearing the sea snake say this, Bengbu knew the other party was going to make a move.
Although its current strength was inferior to the sea snake's, looking at the sea snake's parted mouth and those full rows of sharp fangs, its heart trembled a bit.
But it did not step aside, instead saying firmly,
"These are Lord Qinling's rules!"
Its voice trembled slightly, but it still spoke out.
"No incense, no meat. It's the same no matter who comes."
The sea snake's ferocious grin froze for an instant.
Then it moved, first sweeping its tail and knocking a large swathe of Little Clam Spirits who were resting nicely on the nearby reef flying.
The Little Clam Spirits collided against the reef with a dull thud.
The other minor demons were frightened and fled in all directions; some burrowed into the sand, while others hid behind reefs.
After swinging those tail lashes, the sea snake didn't even glance at those Little Clam Spirits, continuing to swim toward the dragon corpse.
Bengbu still blocked its path.
The sea snake lowered its head, looking at this Clam Spirit blocking its way, having lost its patience long ago.
"Since you want to die—"
It opened its mouth, revealing a full set of sharp fangs, and bit down at Bengbu.
Just at that moment, a streak of golden light darted out from the temple.
This streak of golden light pierced straight through the sea snake's body, and the sea snake's body, brushed by the golden light, instantly froze.
It maintained the posture of its mouth open, its sharp fangs less than a few inches away from Bengbu's shell.
Then, its body split open from the middle. Not only was it cleaved apart, but it even began to disintegrate from the inside.
Scales, flesh, and bones turned into nothingness bit by bit within the golden light.
It didn't even have time to let out a miserable scream before it vanished.
Only a faint mist of blood remained, slowly dispersing in the seawater.
Bengbu had originally shrunk tightly inside its shell, preparing to hard-withstand the sea snake's bite.
As a result, catching a glimpse of the golden light, it hurriedly poked its eyeballs out and saw a gradually dissipating mist of blood.
It turned its head to look at the source of the golden light, which was precisely the shimmering, jewel-adorned Underwater Temple.
On the temple eaves, those pearls were still glowing.
On the offering table, residual golden light floated over the pearl carved into the divine statue.
Bengbu stretched its tongue out of its shell, turned around, and looked at the minor demons hiding behind the reefs and burrowing into the sand who were still trembling.
Taking a deep breath, its voice was much steadier than before.
"Who else? Who else doesn't want to offer incense?"
"You can try again now!"
No monsters answered.
Those minor demons poked their heads out from behind the reefs, crawled out from the sand, climbed out one by one, lined up, and swam toward the temple gates.
The procession was crooked, but very quiet.
Not a single one dared to cut in line, and not a single one dared to speak.
They simply lined up, swimming into the shimmering, jewel-adorned temple one by one, lighting joss sticks one by one, and prostrating before the offering table one by one.
Bengbu stood at the temple entrance, waving its tentacles to maintain order, but its eyes kept glancing into the temple.
The pearl on the offering table was still glowing, warm and moist, illuminating the entire temple with a soft glow.
Lord Qinling inside the shrine looked at the monsters offering incense below.
The golden light just now was naturally his doing.
As a deity, he wouldn't dare say he had the heart of a Bodhisattva, but he still believed he possessed these thunderous methods.
Since this sea snake couldn't understand his rules, he wouldn't mind giving it a taste of a streak of golden light!
