80: Chapter 80 The Evil Spirit is Immortal
The other two constables also gathered around, patting the young constable's shoulder and praising him all at once.
"Not bad, kid!"
"One slash per kill, clean and neat!"
"How come we never realized you were so good at fighting before?"
The young constable felt a bit embarrassed by the praise, scratched the back of his head, puffed out his chest, wiped the blood splashed on his face with the back of his hand, and held his chin high.
"What's so hard about that? I'm the bane of big cats. I'll kill as many as come."
Just at that moment, a tiger paw swung over from behind him.
Fast, so fast that it was completely impossible to see clearly.
That tiger paw was larger than his entire head, its claws pitch black like five scimitars, carrying a reeking stench.
"Smack."
The sound wasn't loud, but dull and muffled.
The young constable's head flew off his neck, spinning several times in the air.
His face still wore that previous smile, the corners of his mouth upturned, his eyes narrowed, before he could even react to what had happened.
His body was still standing, blood gushing out from the severed cut on his neck.
The blood splattered onto the faces of the two constables, and it was warm.
The youth who had been applauding just moments ago opened his mouth wide and let out a direct scream.
Constable Meng Yu's sword, which had just been sheathed, came out of its scabbard once again.
He stared at that tiger paw, staring at the Demon Tiger that should have been thoroughly dead.
It had stood up; the wound on its belly sliced open by the sliding slash was still there, its intestines dragging on the ground, stained with dirt and gravel.
But it had stood up!
Its eyes were no longer red; they were white, resembling two boiled fish eyes.
On the side of the Demon Tiger's neck, something was burrowing out.
Rhizomes, plant rhizomes, dark green, burrowing out from the skin and flesh.
They wrapped around its neck, wrapped around its shoulders, and wrapped around its front legs.
At the tip of the rhizome beside the Demon Tiger's neck, a flower bloomed.
A black flower, yet lacking any sense of beauty that a flower should possess; instead, it looked like a patch of black mold.
Not only that, this black flower was also emitting visible black mist.
The other Demon Tiger had also stood up.
The same white eyes, the same rhizomes, the same black flowers.
Its belly was also split open, with its intestines dragging all over the ground.
But it stood very steadily, its four paws digging into the earth, its back arched, a low sound rolling from its throat.
Constable Meng Yu stared at those black flowers, stared at the rhizomes burrowing out from the Demon Tiger's neck, and stared at the writhing black mist.
A word flashed through his mind.
"Evil spirit!"
Constable Meng Yu blurted it out directly.
The moment that word left his mouth, he felt half his blood run cold.
The two constables also saw the eerie Demon Tiger before them and heard Constable Meng Yu utter the word "evil spirit".
One constable stepped back two paces, holding his saber horizontally in front of him, his legs trembling;
the other stood in place, the tip of his saber pointing at the ground, his face as white as paper, his lips quivering.
People living in this era felt an absolute terror toward evil spirits.
Right at this moment, those two Demon Tigers moved.
Step by step, they walked toward Constable Meng Yu and the two constables.
Their intestines dragged behind them, leaving two wet, dark-red trails on the ground.
Those black flowers twisted, and black mist seeped out from the petals.
Constable Meng Yu gripped his saber tightly, staring at the increasingly close eerie Demon Tigers, leaving only a single thought in his mind—
Run!
He had browsed through those records in the county office archives, where the yellowed pages stated—
"Evil spirits are immortal and indestructible, unable to be resisted by human might."
The internal organs of those two Demon Tigers had spilled all over the ground, with intestines dragging behind them.
But they had stood up, were still walking, still moving, and still killing people.
This wasn't the Demon Tigers controlling their own bodies; it was something else.
It was those rhizomes burrowing out from their necks, that black flower!
"Run!!!"
Constable Meng Yu's voice exploded, jolting the two terrified constables back to their senses.
He turned and ran. After running two steps, he saw the youth.
Gritting his teeth, Constable Meng Yu bent down, grabbed the youth by the back of his collar, picked him up like a little chick, tucked him under his arm, and continued running.
The two constables also turned and ran, heading in the direction where the horses were located.
Constable Meng Yu saw the silhouettes of those horses.
He tossed the youth onto the horse's back. The youth lay across it, hugging the horse's neck, trembling all over and not daring to move.
Constable Meng Yu vaulted onto his horse, pulling the reins tight. The horse neighed, lifting its front hooves and almost throwing him off.
He clamped his legs against the horse's belly to steady himself and shouted back.
"Get on your horses and run!"
The constable running in front had already rushed to his horse, vaulting onto it with a clean, smooth, and fluid motion.
The constable running behind also arrived, reaching out to grab the reins.
"Snap."
A Demon Tiger's head suddenly thrust out, its mouth wide open to reveal a mouthful of sharp fangs, clamping down on his waist.
His body was yanked down from the horse's back.
He let out a cry, and then there was no sound.
Holding him in its jaws, the Demon Tiger shook its head, and his body swung back and forth like a tattered rag.
Blood gushed out from the tiger's mouth, dripping one drop at a time onto the muddy, churned-up dirt road.
Constable Meng Yu no longer looked back.
He clamped his horse's belly and lashed it fiercely; the horse neighed and charged forward.
The two horses galloped through the village, their hoofbeats as rapid as drumbeats, shattering the deathly silence of the setting sun.
Constable Meng Yu leaned low over the horse's back, with the youth lying prone in front of him. The youth's hands gripped the horse's mane tightly, his entire body trembling like a sieve.
From behind came the sound of the other constable's horse hooves, following closely behind him.
Very close, close enough that he could hear the panting sound of that horse.
The village entrance was right ahead, the leaning archway revealing a corner in the setting sun.
Run a few more steps, just a few more steps and they could rush out, onto the main imperial road!
Suddenly, a Demon Tiger leaped down from a nearby rooftop.
Its body traced an arc under the setting sun, slamming into the other constable.
The constable didn't even have time to cry out.
The Demon Tiger's claws pressed down on his shoulders, flipping him off the horse's back and pinning him to the ground.
His horse neighed and rushed forward, running a few steps before stopping and looking back at its master.
The Demon Tiger lowered its head, its mouth wide open to reveal a mouthful of sharp fangs, and bit down on the constable's neck.
"Snap."
The constable's body convulsed a few times before going still, blood gushing out from the hole in his neck.
The other Demon Tiger hurried up from behind, crouched beside its companion, lowered its head, and also began to tear and bite.
Constable Meng Yu looked back and saw that scene.
His eye sockets instantly turned red.
His hand pressed against the hilt of his saber, bulging veins standing out on the back of his hand.
He wanted to draw his blade, wanted to charge back, wanted to hack those two Demon Tigers into minced meat, wanted to chop off their heads.
But he could not kill them.
They had already died once.
How was he supposed to kill Demon Tigers that were already dead?
At this moment, Constable Meng Yu suddenly understood the powerlessness of facing evil spirits.
And he understood the phrase "evil spirits are immortal and indestructible" even more profoundly.
Constable Meng Yu loosened his grip on the hilt, turned away, and lashed fiercely with his whip.
The horse neighed and rushed forward, charging onto the main imperial road.
The two Demon Tigers soon rushed out of the village as well, following closely behind them relentlessly.
Constable Meng Yu simply leaned low over the horse's back, running for his life as the wind whistled past his ears.
The youth in front of him was no longer trembling; he had passed out, his face as white as paper.
At this moment, a village naturally surfaced in Constable Meng Yu's mind.
Qin Family Village!
He was going to Qin Family Village!
Perhaps only that deity named Lord Qinling could resolve this matter!
