15: Chapter 15: The Conspiracy Unfolds
After returning to the base, Wang Jie called Chen Xue over and asked in detail about the situation with King Kong.
Chen Xue explained it in great detail: how many people King Kong had, where they lived, what their weapons were like, and their daily routine.
Wang Jie listened and took notes, already forming a rough battle plan in his mind.
But just as he was preparing to gather the soldiers for a meeting, the system suddenly sounded an alert:
【Abnormal signal source detected】
【Origin: Industrial Park direction】
【Signal type: Encrypted radio】
【Suggestion: Build a Communication Center to decrypt】
Wang Jie was taken aback.
Encrypted radio?
He asked the system, "What are the requirements for a Communication Center?"
【Communication Center: Requires 5000 funds, 300 power, construction time 30 minutes】
He had five thousand funds. He also had enough power, three hundred.
He immediately clicked to build.
Thirty minutes later, a silver-white building rose from the ground in the corner of the base. It had several huge antennas on top that were slowly rotating.
Wang Jie walked inside. It was a control room with several consoles, and various data flashed on the screens.
The system alert sounded:
【Communication Center completed】
【Decrypting abnormal signal...】
【Decryption complete】
A piece of text appeared on the screen:
"...Subject 37 has escaped, currently tracking... Virus mutation rate exceeds expectations... Need more samples... Academy of Sciences has lost contact, suspected to be occupied by King Kong... Send personnel to recover data immediately..."
Wang Jie stared at the text, his brows furrowing.
Subjects? Virus mutation? Academy of Sciences?
He remembered the "Academy of Sciences" that Zhang Hai mentioned.
That mysterious organization that never communicated with anyone.
What kind of experiments were they actually conducting?
He continued reading.
"...Phase two of the 'new human project' is about to start, requiring a large number of living samples... Suggest obtaining them from surrounding survivor bases... Priority target: Alliance, approximately 300 people, suitable as samples..."
Wang Jie's pupils contracted.
new human project?
Living samples?
Survivor bases?
He suddenly understood something.
That Academy of Sciences was not doing any legitimate research.
They were using living people for experiments.
And those "subjects" were likely those mutants—
Wang Jie recalled those things that used to be human, those twisted, deformed monsters that only knew how to kill.
So that was it.
So that was it.
He clenched his fists.
Zhou Jianguo had said that the Academy of Sciences was occupied by King Kong.
But in the occupied Academy of Sciences, there were still people sending encrypted radio signals.
What did this mean?
It meant the people from the Academy of Sciences might not be dead yet.
They were hiding somewhere, still continuing their experiments.
And their target was the 300 people of the Alliance—perhaps also the dozens of people on his side.
Wang Jie took a deep breath.
This war was much more complex than he had imagined.
He needed more intelligence.
He turned to the operator at the Communication Center, "Can you track the source of this signal?"
The operator tapped a few keys on the keyboard, and a map appeared on the screen with a flashing red dot.
The location of the red dot was deep in the Industrial Park, about two kilometers away from King Kong's camp.
That was the original territory of the Academy of Sciences.
"Commander," the operator said, "The signal is still continuing. The other party might be waiting for a response."
Wang Jie was silent for a few seconds.
Then he made a decision:
"Reply to them. Say that we are from the Alliance and want to talk to them."
The operator was stunned, "Commander, this—"
"Reply."
The operator nodded and began sending the signal.
A few minutes later, a new piece of text appeared on the screen:
"Welcome. Tomorrow at noon, Factory Building 12 in the Industrial Park. Only one person is allowed to come. If anyone is found following, the agreement is canceled."
Wang Jie looked at this text, the corners of his mouth slightly raised.
One person?
Fine.
He would go alone.
After Lin Waner heard about this, she was very upset.
"Are you crazy?" she said, "Going to that place alone? What if it's a trap?"
Wang Jie shook his head, "It shouldn't be. If it were a trap, they wouldn't have sent an encrypted radio signal."
Lin Waner was still worried, "That's still not okay. What if? What if something happens?"
Wang Jie looked at her and suddenly smiled.
"Are you worried about me?"
Lin Waner was stunned for a moment, her face turning slightly red.
"Who's worried about you? I'm worried that there will be no one to manage the base!"
Wang Jie smiled even more visibly.
"Alright, alright, I know you're worried." He said, "But I have to go. This matter concerns the lives of many people."
Lin Waner was silent for a while.
Then she said, "Then I'll go with you."
Wang Jie shook his head, "No. Only one person can go."
"Then let the Sniper provide cover from a distance—"
"Also no." Wang Jie said, "If discovered, it's over."
Lin Waner bit her lip.
"Then promise me," she said, "come back alive."
Wang Jie looked at her and nodded.
"I promise you."
