22: Chapter 22 Intelligence Analysis
Those documents were salvaged from Jingang's private room, packed in an iron box and tightly locked. After prying it open, inside was a thick stack of materials, all regarding the Academy of Sciences.
Lin Waner organized these materials and then gave a report to Wang Jie.
"This Jingang is more complicated than we thought." She pointed at the documents and said, "He's not just a thug leader. There's someone behind him."
Wang Jie frowned: "Who?"
Lin Waner opened a document: "Look at this."
It was a handwritten letter, the handwriting was very scrawled, but the content was startling:
"Comrade Jingang: The matters of the Academy of Sciences are entrusted to you. Those researchers refuse to cooperate, so you may use any means. As long as you obtain the complete data for the 'new human project', the higher-ups will give you everything you want. Remember, those samples are very important; capture them alive if possible. If it's truly not possible, dead is also fine."
The signature was a code name: K.
Wang Jie looked at the letter and remained silent for a long time.
"Higher-ups?" he asked. "What higher-ups?"
Lin Waner shook her head: "I don't know. But from the tone of this letter, there should be a larger organization behind Jingang."
Wang Jie continued to look through the documents.
The more he looked, the more his heart sank.
Inside those documents was detailed information on the Academy of Sciences: organizational structure, research directions, personnel lists, and experimental data. There was a preliminary proposal for the 'new human project': how to create Super Soldiers through gene modification, how to control Mutant, and how to—conduct experiments on living people.
There was also a list with dozens of names, each marked with 'Recovered', 'Pending Recovery', or 'Missing'.
In the 'Missing' column, Wang Jie saw three characters: Chen Jianguo.
That Chief Scientist of the Academy of Sciences.
"He's not dead," Wang Jie said. "Jingang was lying to me."
Lin Waner nodded: "It seems so. But where is he?"
Wang Jie thought for a moment and opened another document.
It was a map with several locations marked: the Academy of Sciences Headquarters, Jingang's Camp, the Alliance's base, and several places he had never seen before.
One of the locations was circled in red pen.
Beside it were written a few words: Backup Laboratory.
Wang Jie's eyes lit up.
"Here." He pointed at the red circle. "Chen Jianguo might be here."
Lin Waner leaned in to look: "What place is this?"
"I don't know," Wang Jie said. "But it's worth checking out."
He stood up, walked to the window, and looked at the base outside.
In just a few days, this place had completely changed. The newly arrived survivors were assigned jobs; some were repairing houses, some were planting vegetables, and some were learning to use weapons. Soldiers were on patrol, Engineers were inspecting equipment, and everything was proceeding in an orderly manner.
But Wang Jie knew this was only a surface calm.
Beneath the surface, undercurrents were surging.
That person named 'K', that larger organization, those eyes still peering from the shadows—
He had to figure out exactly what these people wanted to do.
"Get ready," he said to Lin Waner. "In a few days, we'll go check out that Backup Laboratory."
Lin Waner nodded: "Alright."
She paused and then asked, "Should we tell the Alliance side?"
Wang Jie thought about it: "Let's not say anything for now. We'll tell them after we've investigated."
Lin Waner looked at him, hesitating to speak.
Wang Jie knew what she wanted to say.
She wanted to say that they were in a partnership with the Alliance and should share information.
But he also understood that with some things, the fewer people who knew, the better.
It wasn't a lack of trust in the Alliance, but rather—
That 'K' might be right by their side.
