41: Chapter 41 Cooperative Operations
Firepower poured onto that massive Evolver leader, but it merely swayed without falling.
Bullets struck its black carapace, sending up sparks. Shells exploded, and as the smoke cleared, there were only a few shallow cracks on its carapace.
"What the hell is this thing?" a soldier beside Wang Jie cursed.
Wang Jie didn't answer; he just stared fixedly at the monster.
It moved.
Its massive body charged with incredible speed, smashing a fist into a tank. That tank, weighing tens of tons, was knocked onto its side; its tracks shattered and its cannon barrel twisted.
"Spread out! Don't bunch up!" Wang Jie roared.
The soldiers quickly dispersed, firing from all directions. But the leader's speed was too fast; it wove through the net of fire, and with every strike, a vehicle was overturned and a soldier was torn apart.
Wang Jie's heart was bleeding.
These were his soldiers, his comrades-in-arms, his brothers.
"Gene Warriors, move out!"
Five Gene Warriorss rushed out simultaneously, pouncing on the leader from different directions. Their speed was fast and their strength was great, but compared to the leader, they were still a cut below.
One Gene Warriors was grabbed by the leader and thrown away like a rag doll, slamming into a wall and falling silent.
Another Gene Warriors dodged the leader's claw and punched its leg. The carapace on that leg cracked, and black liquid flowed out.
"It's effective! Hit its leg!" Wang Jie shouted.
All firepower was concentrated on the leader's leg. The cracked carapace was torn apart by bullets, the wound grew larger and larger, and more and more black liquid flowed out.
The leader's speed slowed down.
It let out a heaven-shaking roar and turned to run.
But Wang Jie would not give it the chance.
"Radiation Engineer, fire!"
Three pale green beams struck the leader simultaneously. Its body began to fester, its skin began to slough off, and those black carapace pieces fell off one by one.
It fell.
The massive body slammed into the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Wang Jie walked over and stood before it.
Those blood-red eyes were still looking at him; in the pupils seemed to be a trace of unwillingness, a trace of anger, and a trace of—sorrow?
Wang Jie raised his gun, aiming at its head.
"Rest in peace."
A gunshot rang out.
The leader's eyes closed.
A system notification sounded:
【Killed Evolver leader ×1, obtained Funds +5000, Mutation Core +5】
Wang Jie didn't look at the numbers; he just turned around and walked toward the next battlefield.
The battle was not yet over.
On the other side of the factory area, the Alliance army was in a fierce battle with a large number of Evolvers.
Zhou Jianguo led the team personally, charging at the very front. His face was covered in blood—he didn't know if it was his own or the enemy's—but his eyes were bright, like an old wolf.
"Old Wang!" He saw Wang Jie and roared, "Over here!"
Wang Jie charged over with his troops.
The two armies merged, and their firepower instantly doubled.
The Evolvers began to retreat.
Although they possessed a certain level of intelligence, when faced with such fierce attacks, they instinctively chose to flee.
"Pursue!" Zhou Jianguo shouted, "Don't let a single one get away!"
But Wang Jie stopped him.
"Don't pursue," he said. "We must retreat before dark."
Zhou Jianguo paused, looking at the sky.
It was indeed getting dark.
If they were still in the wild after dark, it would be too dangerous.
"Fine," he said. "Recall the troops."
The two armies began to retreat in an orderly fashion.
Behind them, that massive factory area appeared particularly ominous in the setting sun.
They had won this battle.
But the cost was not small.
