Chapter 15 Who Am I 14
"You two, hide in my room and don't come out without my command," Lin Xiangjun instructed quickly. She then turned off the flashlight, opened the room door, and stepped out.
Wang Min pulled Patrick Star back and gave a crisp reply of agreement.
Lin Xiangjun wasn't worried about Wang Min; she was more concerned about Patrick Star, who was still mentally impaired. Although it was currently busy digesting and remained motionless, what would happen once it finished?
The actions of a fool are always unpredictable.
Unfortunately, there was nothing else she could do. Lin Xiangjun could only pray that Wang Min could keep Patrick Star in check and prevent it from doing anything too shocking.
A man and a woman in their thirties stood at the guest room door. The woman carried vegetables and meat, while the man lugged a large bag of rice; they looked like they had just returned from grocery shopping at the supermarket.
"Good daughter, did you eat well today?"
"I did, Mom. I finished all my food," Lin Xiangjun replied obediently.
In fact, she hadn't. That half-bowl of tomato and egg rice was still by the door, but her parents seemed not to see it, acting as if it didn't exist.
Mom put the vegetables and meat into the refrigerator. Seeing that the bowl of rice had been cleaned out and only an empty bowl remained on the counter, she gave a satisfied smile.
By then, Dad had moved the rice into the kitchen and closed the front door behind him.
It wasn't eight o'clock yet, so the lights couldn't be turned on. Closing the front door completely blocked out the light from the hallway, plunging the entire room into darkness.
In the darkness, her parents' voices became eerie.
"Good daughter, why is it so dark in the room? Mom can't prep the vegetables for tomorrow's meal. Come, help Mom turn on the living room lights."
"Good daughter, Dad needs to open the rice bag, but it's too dark to see. Come over and turn on the kitchen light."
Lin Xiangjun didn't move.
[1. Electricity is expensive. Remember to save power. The lights in the house can only be turned on from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM the next day. It is very bright during the day, so there is no need to turn on the lights.]
Although the rule was nonsense—since the current pitch-blackness had absolutely nothing to do with being "very bright"—so what? It wasn't eight o'clock yet, so she wouldn't even touch the light switch.
Mom called out a few more times. Seeing that Lin Xiangjun wasn't moving at all, her voice grew somber.
"Mom and Dad are so busy, yet you won't even help with such a small thing? You really are a selfish child!"
Dad's voice, however, grew excited.
"Are you unwilling to help? Are you unwilling to help your parents?"
[1. Your family loves you very much, and you love your family very much. Therefore, if they ask for help, do not refuse.]
This was the first rule of the residential area.
The two rules conflicted. Now, turning the light on or keeping it off would violate one of them. It seemed to have become a multiple-choice question where the player had to make a decision.
Unit 204.
"Good son, hurry and turn on the light for Mom! Are you not listening to Mom anymore? You won't even help Mom!"
Mom's voice was gloomy. Wang Zixuan had never had a flashlight, so his eyes had long since adapted to the darkness, allowing him to see her expression.
Her voice was still somber, but her expression was exceptionally excited. A terrifyingly long tongue snaked out of her mouth, licking her lips in anticipation. Wang Zixuan felt that if he refused, she would pounce and tear him to shreds.
He swallowed hard and tremblingly reached for the switch.
The Residential Area Rules applied to the entire complex, and the Family Rules applied to the household. Since the home was within the complex and the rules contradicted each other, choosing the more fundamental rule was surely less likely to lead to an error... right?
The light turned on.
The expression on Mom's face immediately returned to normal. She nodded with relief and gently stroked Wang Zixuan's head. "So good. You really are Mom's good son. Tell Mom what you want to eat, and I'll make it for you."
Wang Zixuan breathed a sigh of relief, secretly glad he had made the right decision.
...
"Are you being disobedient? Do you not love Mom and Dad? Hmm?"
Mom and Dad's voices became increasingly urgent and excited. Lin Xiangjun could even hear the crackling sound of their joints twisting.
"How could that be, Mom and Dad? We are a loving family. How could I not love you?" she said with a smile.
"Then go and turn on the living room light."
"It's only seven o'clock. Turning on the light would waste so much electricity."
A look of excitement suddenly erupted in Mom and Dad's eyes. They looked at Lin Xiangjun with intense heat, as if she were already a delicious meal on a plate.
"But—" Lin Xiangjun said with a smile, "how could I bear to let the parents I love so much work in the dark?"
A beam of bright light suddenly shot directly into the two weird creatures' eyes, illuminating their distorted expressions and blinding their four eyes in the process.
Mom and Dad: ...
Damn it! Where did this flashlight come from!
"Mom and Dad, you can see clearly now, right? Isn't this much brighter than the living room light?" Lin Xiangjun adjusted the light to its maximum brightness, and the entire kitchen instantly became as bright as day.
"Come on, get to work, Mom and Dad."
Lin Xiangjun smiled obediently, but in the eyes of the two weird creatures, she was no different from a beagle.
The two weird creatures worked with gloomy faces. While washing dishes, they clattered the pots and pans so loudly that they even broke two bowls.
Finally, it was eight o'clock. Lin Xiangjun checked the time, then turned on the light and put away her flashlight.
Mom had already brought the dishes and rice to the table. Dad was sitting in the head seat, pouring himself a beer.
As soon as Lin Xiangjun sat down, Mom added a piece of Braised Pork to her plate. "I didn't make much for lunch. My good daughter must be hungry, right? Come, Mom made this specifically for you. You must eat more."
Lin Xiangjun glanced at the dishes.
Braised Pork, Sweet and Sour Eggplant, Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin, and Sweet and Sour Fish.
Lin Xiangjun: ...
What's going on? Did they kill a sugar merchant? Are they trying to fence the stolen goods here?
Setting aside whether the meat in the instance was clean, who would dare eat a table full of dishes like this without two bottles of insulin? Eating this would make a blood glucose meter explode.
Meeting her parents' eager gazes, Lin Xiangjun would have to be an idiot not to realize something was wrong with this table of food.
Family Rule 5: [Please do not eat too much sugar, as it will cause cavities. The same goes for your friends.]
Unfortunately, the weird creatures were too impatient. If there had been only one dish, Lin Xiangjun might have actually fallen for it, as no one would normally link the sugar in Braised Pork to the sugar in the rules. But with such a large table of dishes being sickly sweet, even a fool would know there was a problem.
Not to mention the other dishes starting with "sweet and sour," Braised Pork also required rock sugar for caramelization. Who said only sugar in cubes was called sugar? The sugar in these dishes counted too.
She glanced at her parents. After serving her, her mother stared at her intently. Her father's glass was already full; he was gulping it down while staring at her fixedly.
"Eat up, good daughter. Mom and Dad made this specifically for you. It's all your favorite food. You must eat more."
Another multiple-choice question: eat and violate the Family Rules, or don't eat and violate the Residential Area Rules.
Lin Xiangjun sneered inwardly. She suddenly grabbed her chopsticks and slammed them onto the table!
As her parents' expressions shifted abruptly, she let out a loud wail and began to cry.
"You don't love me at all!"
