83: Bai Jie: How can I compensate Jiang Feng?

Outside the Hospital, the scorching sun poured down like a golden waterfall on the asphalt road, which had softened from the heat.

Heat rose like playful snakes, coiling upwards, as if to melt the entire world.

“That’s it, my… sis… brother-in-law… yes, brother-in-law!”

Bai Jie felt her heart pounding wildly in her chest, as if it would burst through.

Her face began to flush, and her hands unconsciously clutched at the hem of her clothes, her knuckles turning white from the force.

She inwardly cried out, “Oh no, this is bad.” She didn’t know how it happened, but she had inexplicably changed “husband” to “brother-in-law.”

What should she do now? If Jiang Feng pressed her, how would she explain?

He wouldn’t think I’m a liar, would he!?

Should I say it was a slip of the tongue? But that excuse is too far-fetched; he definitely wouldn’t believe it.

Bai Jie hesitated, her expression a bit awkward and unnatural, her lips trembling slightly as she said:

“Xiao Feng, just tell your sister, were you bullied by some hooligans? Maybe I can help you…”

As soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them, filled with remorse.

What if Jiang Feng truly expected her help, and she couldn’t deliver? Wouldn’t that just disappoint him more?

Her original intention was that since her abusive husband was a minor leader in the Black Dragon Gang, and Jiang Feng happened to be bullied by hooligans, perhaps she could offer some assistance.

But then she thought, someone like Liu Chuanzhi wouldn’t respond even if she asked for help.

He might even fly into a rage and potentially implicate Jiang Feng!

Liu Chuanzhi was an extremely petty man; though he was arrogant and domineering outside, he was impotent, yet extremely possessive and obsessed with saving face, like a vicious dog guarding its food, not allowing anyone near his belongings.

Once, Bai Jie merely chatted a bit longer with a male street vendor while buying groceries, and when Liu Chuanzhi saw it, his face instantly turned terrifyingly dark, like the sky before a storm.

He immediately ordered his subordinates to smash the stall in the street; the “crashing” sounds were like a demon’s roar.

The vendor was beaten black and blue, bleeding profusely, and collapsed on the ground, groaning in pain.

Liu Chuanzhi was still not appeased; he publicly grabbed Bai Jie’s hair and dragged her home like a rag doll to beat her.

Thinking of this, Bai Jie felt a sharp pain in her scalp, as if it were being torn apart.

She didn’t understand what she had done to deserve such treatment!

For a long time afterward, Bai Jie dared not speak to any man, not even make eye contact, fearing she would implicate others.

She was like a startled bird, living in endless fear.

Bai Jie had wanted to escape this suffocating place more than once, but the thought of the consequences if she were caught made her dare not act rashly.

This so-called home was like an airtight cage, trapping her tightly; she didn’t know when she could escape this painful life, perhaps never.

Thinking of this, Bai Jie’s heart filled with helplessness and fear, her expression somewhat dim, and she stammered:

“Jiang Feng, I…”

Bai Jie’s voice grew softer and softer, and she lowered her head, as if she had done something shameful.

She felt her face burning and wished she could find a hole to crawl into.

She kept blaming herself inwardly: How can I be so useless, unable to even speak clearly?

Fortunately, Jiang Feng didn’t mind; he sighed, his face full of sorrow, his brows tightly furrowed:

“Oh, there’s nothing that can’t be said. The person who bullied me is Liu Chuanzhi, a big shot in the underworld, a minor leader of the Black Dragon Gang.

How can ordinary people like us fight him?”

As he spoke, he clenched his fists, as if he wanted to devour Liu Chuanzhi alive.

Bai Jie, standing beside him, was full of disbelief, her body swaying a few times, almost falling.

Jiang Feng continued as if he hadn’t noticed:

“This morning, when I got home, I saw over a dozen hooligans with dyed yellow hair surrounding my doorstep.

It scared me to death; my dearest aunt almost suffered because of it.

If we hadn’t run fast… oh, Sister Bai Jie, what do you think I should do?”

He put on a pitiful act, fabricating a benevolent lie effortlessly, a perfect victim.

If the beaten hooligans and Xiong Ge heard this, they would surely jump up and shout: “No, buddy, who exactly got beaten into a pig’s head? You’re really good at twisting facts!”

Bai Jie listened, her pretty face instantly turning pale, and her body swayed involuntarily; a wave of panic swept through her heart:

How could it be him? What should I do? My husband actually did such a thing!

She had originally planned to ask Liu Chuanzhi to help deal with the hooligans who bullied Jiang Feng.

Who knew that the one bullying Jiang Feng was Liu Chuanzhi!

Bai Jie felt a bit dizzy, and a strong sense of guilt overwhelmed her.

Her heart was filled with self-reproach and pain, constantly blaming herself:

“How could I have married such a devil? Not only does he commit evil deeds outside, but he also harms innocent people.

What can I do to compensate Jiang Feng? I’m sorry, Jiang Feng; I harmed him.

If only I could have stopped Liu Chuanzhi sooner.”

The next second, she lost her balance and almost fell straight to the ground.

Fortunately, Jiang Feng was quick, catching her in his arms, his face full of anxiety, saying, “Sister Bai Jie, are you alright? Are you suffering from heatstroke?”

As he spoke, he reached out and touched Bai Jie’s smooth, fair forehead: “Strange, it’s a bit warm!”

“I, I… I’m fine…”

Bai Jie gently broke free from Jiang Feng’s embrace; her movements were a bit hurried, and her face showed a hint of panic.

She took a deep breath, barely managing to calm the turbulent waves in her heart.

The reason she quickly broke free was not that she disliked Jiang Feng, but because they were currently at the Hospital entrance.

If Liu Chuanzhi or his subordinates saw them, it would bring more trouble to Jiang Feng!

She absolutely could not implicate Jiang Feng!

Jiang Feng didn’t mind her actions; instead, he said with concern, “Shall we go sit at the coffee shop across the street?

It’s too sunny here, and people are coming and going, which is annoying.

Let’s go there and talk properly; maybe we can figure out a way to solve this problem.”

“Okay…”

Bai Jie nodded gently, her voice a bit weak.

Her heart was still a little uneasy, not knowing what would happen next, but she also felt a little more at ease in the coffee shop.

The two arrived at the coffee shop across the street; the rich aroma of coffee filled the air inside, and soft music flowed gently.

They found a seat by the window, where sunlight streamed in, forming patches of light on the table.

Jiang Feng waved to call a waiter and ordered two coffees.

Bai Jie sat there, her hands unconsciously clutching at the hem of her clothes, which were now somewhat wrinkled from her grip.

She was afraid that once Jiang Feng knew her identity, he would despise her and avoid her like the plague.

She also felt guilty about her husband’s actions, which had caused Jiang Feng deep harm, and her heart felt like it was weighed down by a large stone.

What should she do?!

How could she compensate Jiang Feng?

How could she resolve Jiang Feng’s predicament?

Bai Jie’s mind was in a tangled mess.

She was wondering what she should do to compensate Jiang Feng for the harm he suffered, without revealing her identity and without being discovered by Liu Chuanzhi.
