The feast had wound down naturally as the evening grew late. The initial excitement of celebration had mellowed into comfortable contentment, people sitting in small groups sharing stories, children being carried to bed by tired parents, the cooking fires burning low.

Satou sat at the head table between Lyra and Jessica, feeling pleasantly full and genuinely relaxed for the first time in over a week. The food had been excellent roasted boar, fresh vegetables from the settlement’s growing gardens, bread that was actually fluffy rather than the dense stuff they’d survived on in the early days.

Urgak had finally stopped making inappropriate toasts after Lyra threatened to cut off his ale supply. Kelvin had extracted the full story of the Richard Clay fight, complete with dramatic reenactments that had the younger goblins watching with wide eyes. Cassius had maintained perfect dignity throughout, though Satou had caught him smiling slightly at some of Urgak’s more outrageous comments.

Now, as people began dispersing to their homes, the courtyard was taking on that peaceful post-celebration atmosphere,the kind of tired satisfaction that came from a day well spent.

Jessica stood up from the table, and Satou noticed immediately that she looked nervous. Her hands were fidgeting with the hem of her healing robes, and her face was flushed in a way that had nothing to do with the ale she’d barely touched.

"Um," Jessica started, then stopped. She took a breath, visibly gathering her courage. "Satou."

The name came out clearly but with obvious effort. She’d been practicing, Satou could hear it in the slight over-pronunciation, the way she emphasized each syllable as if reminding herself not to say "big brother" instead.

"Don’t forget about our date tomorrow," Jessica continued, her blush deepening until her face was nearly crimson. "You promised. Tomorrow evening. Just you and me."

Her voice had gotten progressively higher and faster, the words tumbling out in a rush as if she was afraid she’d lose her nerve if she didn’t say them all at once.

Before Satou could respond, Jessica turned and practically fled, her hands coming up to cover her burning face as she ran. She disappeared around a corner, heading toward the residential area, her footsteps echoing in the quiet night.

Satou watched her go, a smile tugging at his lips. There was something endearing about Jessica’s nervousness, the way she was still adjusting to this new dynamic between them, still working up the courage to call him by name instead of hiding behind the safety of "big brother."

Beside him, Lyra was also watching Jessica’s retreating form with a soft expression. When Jessica disappeared from view, Lyra turned to look at Satou, her smile warm and knowing.

"She’s been practicing, you know," Lyra said quietly. "Calling you ’Satou’ instead of ’big brother.’ I heard her in the healing hall yesterday, muttering your name over and over while organizing supplies. ’Satou, Satou, Satou.’ Like she was trying to make it feel natural on her tongue."

"I could tell," Satou replied.

"She’s nervous about tomorrow," Lyra continued. "Absolutely terrified, actually. She spent two hours this afternoon asking me what she should wear, how she should act, what you might want to do on a date. I’ve never seen her so flustered."

"What did you tell her?"

"I told her to be herself," Lyra said simply. "That you already love her for who she is, so trying to be someone else would be pointless. Though I also suggested she wear the blue dress we found in the last supply caravan. It brings out her eyes beautifully."

She stood up, smoothing down her own dress, the practical administrator’s outfit she wore during the day, though she’d added a decorative sash for the feast. She stepped closer to Satou, her hand coming up to cup his cheek.

"Make tomorrow special for her," Lyra said, her voice carrying both request and command. "Jessica has spent so long being the responsible healer, taking care of everyone else, never putting herself first. She deserves one perfect day where she gets to be the center of someone’s attention. Where she gets to be... cherished."

"I will," Satou promised.

"Good." Lyra leaned in and kissed him, not the passionate kiss from earlier when he’d first returned, but something softer. Gentler. A goodnight kiss that held affection and trust in equal measure.

When she pulled back, she smiled. "Goodnight, Satou. Don’t stay up too late planning tomorrow. You’ll need your energy."

"Goodnight, Lyra."

She walked away toward her quarters, her steps measured and graceful, every inch the composed administrator even at the end of a long, emotional day.

Satou sat there for a few more minutes, watching as the last of the settlement members headed home. The cooking fires were being doused. The tables would be cleaned and stored tomorrow. For now, the courtyard was returning to its normal quiet state.

He thought about tomorrow. About Jessica’s nervous excitement. About Lyra’s advice to make it special.

He’d taken Lyra on a date before the dungeon, that evening by the pond that had ended with them together in his quarters. But that date had been almost accidental, born from Jessica’s observation that Lyra was overworking herself.

This time, Satou wanted to be intentional. Planned. To show Jessica that she wasn’t second-best or an afterthought, but someone whose happiness genuinely mattered to him.

He stood and made his way to his own quarters, his mind already working through possibilities.

The next day passed in a blur of normal settlement activities.

Satou met with Urgak and Cassius in the morning to discuss security improvements. With his demon lord status now provisional but recognized, there was a real possibility of attacks, either from hostile demon lords, from human forces, or from monster tribes who saw the settlement as a threat to traditional ways.

Lyra pulled him into an afternoon meeting about resource allocation. The settlement was growing faster than expected, and they needed to plan expansion of housing, food production, and basic infrastructure. Her suggestions were, as always, practical and well-thought-out.
