Chapter 164
Chapter 164: Chapter 164
She moved to the center of the training ground. "Attack me. Full power. I’ll defend, and you try to land that theoretical killing strike. Let’s see if you can do it when someone’s actually fighting back."
What followed was an hour of intense sparring. Lilith was skilled—centuries of combat experience showing in every movement. She didn’t let Satou have any easy openings, forcing him to create opportunities through speed and technique.
By the end, Satou had landed three "killing blows"—strikes that would have opened Lilith from shoulder to hip if Void Fang had been live instead of deliberately pulled.
"Better," Lilith admitted. "You can actually fight under pressure. That’s important. The Reaper won’t stand still while you line up your perfect strike."
"Thank you," Satou said, breathing hard. "For this. For helping me prepare even though you think I should be staying out of it."
"I don’t think you should stay out of it," Lilith corrected. "I think you should be the final strike, after we’ve exhausted ourselves creating the opening. That’s different from staying out of it entirely." She paused. "And... I want you to succeed. Even if we fail, even if we all die, I want you to kill that bastard. For everyone he’s killed. For every territory he’s destroyed. Make it count, Satou."
"I will," Satou promised. "I won’t let your sacrifices be meaningless."
Day Five
Cassius found Satou resting, recovering energy for more training.
"You should know," the vampire said quietly, "that the residents are talking about you. About the outsider who came to help defend the Fallen Spires. Some are grateful. Others are uncomfortable with needing outside help. But most are... hopeful. They think that if someone like you is here, maybe we actually have a chance."
"I don’t want to disappoint them," Satou admitted.
"Then don’t," Cassius replied simply. "Win. Kill The Reaper. Prove that even impossible odds can be overcome. Give them the victory they need, the safety they deserve. That’s all any of them ask."
"No pressure," Satou said with dark humor.
"All the pressure," Cassius corrected. "But you’ve handled pressure before. The dungeon, Richard Clay, Chronus himself. This is just another impossible challenge. Survive it like you’ve survived everything else."
"And if I can’t?"
"Then you die trying," Cassius said bluntly. "But at least you’ll die having tried. That’s better than most get."
Day Six
Seraphine summoned Satou to the corrupted chapel—the heart of the Fallen Spires, where everything had begun three centuries ago.
"Tomorrow," she said quietly. "The Reaper arrives tomorrow. Our scouts confirm he’s one day out, traveling alone as expected. By this time tomorrow, the battle will have begun."
"Are you ready?" Satou asked.
"No," Seraphine admitted. "I don’t think anyone’s ever truly ready to face death. But I’m as prepared as I can be. My forces are positioned. Civilians are evacuated. Traps are set. We’ve done everything possible to give ourselves a chance."
She turned to look at Satou. "And you? Are you ready to be our final hope?"
"I have to be," Satou replied. "There’s no alternative. Either I kill The Reaper tomorrow, or everyone here dies. That’s not a choice—it’s a responsibility."
"You don’t owe us this," Seraphine said. "You could leave right now. Escape before The Reaper arrives. Save yourself and return to your settlement, your women, your life. No one would blame you."
"I would blame me," Satou said simply. "I came here to help. I’m not leaving before that’s done."
Seraphine looked at him for a long moment, then did something unexpected. She hugged him—not seductively, not manipulatively, but genuinely. Like a friend expressing gratitude they couldn’t put into words.
"Thank you," she whispered. "For coming. For staying. For being willing to risk everything for people you barely know. Thank you, Satou."
"Don’t thank me yet," Satou replied, returning the embrace. "Thank me after I’ve actually killed The Reaper and everyone’s survived."
"If you kill The Reaper," Seraphine said, pulling back, "I’ll thank you every day for the rest of my very long life. You’ll have saved not just the Fallen Spires, but proven that impossible heroes can be beaten. That will change everything."
The Final Day
The Fallen Spires was eerily quiet.
All civilians had been evacuated. All warriors were at their posts. The outer districts were empty except for traps and defensive positions.
Satou stood at the highest point of the central spire, looking out over the city and beyond, to the eastern approach where The Reaper would arrive come morning.
Cassius materialized beside him. "It’s a clear night. We’ll see him coming from miles away."
"That’s something, at least," Satou replied. "Better than being surprised."
They stood in silence for a while, just watching the stars.
"Cassius," Satou said finally. "If this goes badly tomorrow—if I fail, if The Reaper kills me—I need you to escape. Get back to my settlement. Tell Lyra and Jessica what happened. Tell them I tried. Tell them..."
"Tell them yourself when you return victorious," Cassius interrupted. "I didn’t come here to flee if things go badly. I came to support you. If you fall, I fall. That’s what it means to serve."
"You don’t serve me," Satou protested. "You’re Loki’s subordinate, just assigned to help."
"I choose to serve you," Cassius corrected. "There’s a difference. Lord Loki sent me to assist, yes. But I choose to stay, choose to fight, choose to see this through regardless of outcome. That’s not obligation—that’s loyalty earned."
"Thank you," Satou said quietly.
"Don’t thank me," Cassius replied. "Just win. Kill the unkillable hero. Show the world that even legends can fall. That’s thanks enough."
Below them, the Fallen Spires waited.
Eight thousand warriors at their posts.
Fifty thousand civilians in deep shelters, praying for survival.
One demon lord, terrified but refusing to show it.
One provisional demon lord with a Reality-Class weapon, trying to convince himself he was ready for what was coming.
And one vampire, loyal beyond reason, standing beside his chosen lord in the face of impossible odds.
Somewhere to the east, The Reaper slept his last night before reaching the Fallen Spires.
Tomorrow, everything would change.
Either Satou would accomplish the impossible and kill the strongest hero in the world.
Or The Reaper would add another demon lord territory to his list of conquests, another Chapter to his legend of invincibility.
There was no middle ground.
No compromise.
No second chances.
Tomorrow, someone would die.
The only question was who.
