"Wonderful," Seraphine said. "Then while we wait, why don’t you show me around, Satou? Give me the grand tour. Let me see what you’ve built here. And your lovely companions can come along, of course. I’m sure they’ll want to ensure I don’t corrupt their demon lord."

The last sentence was delivered with sultry amusement, as if she found their protective instincts entertaining.

Satou stood. "Very well. The tour will give you a good overview of our settlement structure and philosophy."

"Oh, I’m sure it will give me an overview of many things," Seraphine replied, her mismatched eyes gleaming with predatory interest.

They exited the receiving chamber, and Satou could already tell this was going to be the longest three days of his life.

Leading Seraphine through the settlement was an exercise in controlled tension.

She glided through the streets with her retinue trailing behind, her corrupted presence drawing stares from every settlement resident who saw her. Some looked afraid. Others looked captivated, unable to tear their eyes away from her supernatural beauty.

Satou noticed her noticing these reactions, filing away information about his people’s vulnerabilities.

"You’ve built quite extensively in such a short time," Seraphine observed as they passed the residential district. "Earth manipulation for construction, I assume? Very efficient. And these are mixed housing—goblins, orcs, and what appear to be various rescued individuals all living in proximity. Interesting choice."

"The settlement is based on cooperation between races, not segregation," Satou explained. "We’ve found that mixing housing encourages integration and builds community bonds."

"Or creates friction and conflict when cultural differences clash," Seraphine countered. "How do you handle disputes between residents from different backgrounds?"

"We have a judicial system," Lyra replied. "Clear laws that apply equally regardless of race. Disputes are mediated or judged based on evidence and established precedent."

"Laws," Seraphine repeated with amusement. "How civilized. And these laws—do they actually work? Or do the strong simply impose their will while paying lip service to legal fiction?"

It was a pointed question, designed to probe whether Satou’s ideals were genuine or just propaganda.

"They work," Jessica said firmly. "I’ve seen it personally. When a dispute arose between an orc warrior and a goblin craftsman over damaged goods, the case went before Chief Satou. He ruled against the orc even though the orc was stronger and more influential. The ruling stood, the orc accepted it, and the goblin received compensation. The law applied fairly."

"How admirable," Seraphine said, though her tone suggested skepticism. "And if the orc had refused to accept the ruling? What then?"

"Then he would have faced consequences," Satou said. "Escalating from fines to expulsion to physical restraint if necessary. The law isn’t optional here. Everyone follows it, including me."

They passed the training grounds where some of Urgak’s soldiers were drilling. Seraphine paused to watch, her sharp eyes assessing the warriors’ movements.

"Your military forces are... modest," she observed. "Perhaps thirty trained combatants? Maybe forty including reserves? That’s barely enough to defend against serious attack."

"We’re building our forces carefully," Satou replied. "Quality over quantity. And we prioritize defense over aggression. We’re not conquerors."

"No, you’re idealists," Seraphine said. "Building a civilization based on law and cooperation in a world that respects only power and domination. It’s either incredibly brave or incredibly naive. I haven’t decided which yet."

They continued the tour, and throughout it, Satou noticed Seraphine paying particular attention to certain details. She noted the settlement’s defensive positions. She observed how residents interacted with each other and with leadership. She asked seemingly casual questions that were actually probing for information about resources, capabilities, and vulnerabilities.

And all the while, her attention kept returning to Satou himself.

Not just looking—studying. Her mismatched eyes would linger on him for slightly too long, her smile would become too knowing, her proximity would edge slightly closer than appropriate for casual interaction.

Jessica noticed it too. Satou could feel the tension radiating from her, her hand occasionally brushing against his arm as if to remind Seraphine that he was claimed.

Lyra noticed as well, but her reaction was different—calculating rather than emotional. She was watching Seraphine watch Satou, gathering her own intelligence, preparing countermeasures.

They reached the healing hall, and Jessica took the lead in showing Seraphine the facilities. The corrupted angel walked through with interest, examining supplies and asking technical questions about medical capabilities.

"You have healing magic," Seraphine observed, watching Jessica demonstrate on a patient with a minor injury. "Quite strong, actually. Unusual for one so young. Where did you learn?"

"Self-taught," Jessica replied. "With guidance from the Elves and Satou. He encouraged me to develop my abilities."

"How fortunate for you," Seraphine said. Her eyes tracked to where Satou stood near the door, and her smile turned sultry. "To have a teacher so invested in your growth. I imagine his instruction is quite... hands-on? Those marks on your neck suggest he’s very thorough in his teachings."

The implication was blatant, and Jessica’s face flushed with a mixture of embarrassment and anger.

"Chief Satou is an excellent partner who cares deeply about my wellbeing," Jessica said carefully, emphasizing the word ’partner.’ "That’s what people who love each other do—they support each other’s growth."

"Of course," Seraphine agreed, though her smile suggested she wasn’t buying the deflection. "And I’m sure you’re very grateful for his... support. He certainly seems to have marked you thoroughly. A possessive lover, is he? How delicious."

Before Jessica could respond to that obvious provocation, Lyra smoothly interjected: "Lady Seraphine, if you’d like to see our administrative systems, I can show you our record-keeping and resource management. Since you’re evaluating our civilization-building capabilities, understanding our organizational structure would be relevant."

"How practical," Seraphine said. "Yes, let’s see your bureaucracy. I’m sure it’s fascinating."

They moved to the administrative building, and Lyra walked Seraphine through the settlement’s organizational systems with professional efficiency. Population records, resource inventories, work assignments, dispute resolutions—all of it documented and organized.

Seraphine examined it all with clear interest. "This is quite sophisticated for such a young settlement. Most demon lord territories are run through direct command hierarchies. But you’ve built something closer to an actual government. Distributed authority, specialized roles, documented procedures. It’s almost... human in its structure."
