Chapter 189
Chapter 189: Chapter 189
They reached the carriage—an elegant vehicle pulled by two creatures that looked like a cross between horses and serpents. The driver was a male demon with horns and a professional demeanor.
"This will get you to the edge of the anti-teleportation field," Seraphine explained. "From there, you should be able to portal back to your settlement. The journey will take about three hours."
"Three hours I could spend sleeping," Satou joked. "I’m still recovering, after all."
"You better not," Seraphine said, poking him in the chest. "You need to stay awake so you can miss me properly."
"I’m already missing you, and I haven’t even left yet."
"Good," Seraphine replied with satisfaction.
Behind them, Lilith was standing slightly apart from the other commanders, her eyes occasionally flickering to where Cassius was checking the carriage supplies. She seemed to be wrestling with something.
Seraphine noticed and moved to stand beside her military commander. "Are you sure you don’t have anything to say to him?" she asked quietly.
Lilith jumped slightly, then glanced at Seraphine. "I... no. Nothing to say."
"You spent hours healing him yesterday" Seraphine pointed out. "That’s a significant time investment. More than medical necessity required."
"I was being thorough," Lilith said defensively.
"You were being interested," Seraphine corrected with a knowing smile. "And he’s clearly interested back. The way he looks at you—"
"He looks at me like I’m an interesting puzzle to solve," Lilith interrupted. "Not like... not like anything romantic."
"Sometimes the best relationships start with curiosity," Seraphine said softly. "Trust me on this. I just learned that lesson myself."
Lilith was quiet for a moment, then smiled—a small, private expression. "I have a feeling we’ll meet again. Him and I. There’s something... unfinished. But I’m not ready to address it yet. Need to understand what I’m feeling first."
"Fair enough," Seraphine said. "Just don’t wait three hundred years like I did. That’s far too long to be alone."
"Yes, my lady," Lilith replied with genuine warmth.
Satou had finished loading his few belongings into the carriage and turned back to Seraphine. "I guess this is it. For now."
"For now," Seraphine agreed. She stepped close, ignoring the audience, and wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace. "Thank you," she whispered into his ear. "For everything. For saving my city. For seeing me. For giving me something I’d given up on."
"Thank you for being brave enough to be vulnerable," Satou replied, holding her just as tightly. "For taking a chance on genuine connection instead of manipulation. That couldn’t have been easy."
"It was terrifying," Seraphine admitted. "It still is. But it’s worth it."
They pulled apart reluctantly, and Satou climbed into the carriage. Cassius followed, settling into the seat across from him.
The driver clicked the reins, and the serpent-horses began moving. The carriage started rolling forward, and Satou leaned out the window for one last look.
Seraphine stood in the street, surrounded by her commanders and watched by hundreds of civilians. She raised one hand in farewell, and Satou mirrored the gesture.
"I’ll be back!" he called out.
"You better be!" Seraphine called back, her voice carrying clearly. "I’ll be waiting!"
As the carriage moved through the city toward the outer gates, more and more people came out to watch. They lined the streets, waving and calling thanks. Children threw flowers. Warriors saluted. Civilians simply stood with tears in their eyes, grateful to be alive.
Lilith stood beside Seraphine, watching Cassius’s figure in the carriage window grow smaller. She didn’t say anything, but her hand unconsciously moved to her chest, where Cassius’s broken ribs had been. Where she’d spent hours carefully reconstructing bone and tissue. Where she’d felt his life force flickering and fought to stabilize it.
"We will meet again," she murmured, too quiet for anyone else to hear. "I know we will."
Beside her, Seraphine smiled. "Yes, you will."
The carriage passed through the outer gates and began moving down the road away from the Fallen Spires. Satou continued waving until the city was out of sight, then finally sat back in his seat properly.
"Well," Cassius said with a slight smile. "That was quite a farewell. Lady Seraphine seems quite taken with you, my lord."
"The feeling’s mutual," Satou admitted. "She’s... complicated. Damaged. But trying to be better. I respect that."
"And Commander Lilith seems quite taken with you," Satou added, his smile turning mischievous.
Cassius blinked. "What? No. She was just being a professional healer. I don’t think—"
"Cassius, she spent hours healing your injuries that should have taken one hour maximum. She reinforced your bones beyond what was medically necessary. And she couldn’t meet your eyes without blushing. Trust me, that’s interest."
"I..." Cassius paused, processing this. "Really?"
"Really," Satou confirmed. "So next time we visit and we will visit, you should talk to her. Get to know her. See where it goes."
"I don’t even know if I’m interested in pursuing anything," Cassius protested weakly.
"Then figure it out," Satou suggested. "But at least give yourself the option. She’s clearly a remarkable person. Skilled warrior, talented healer, loyal to her people. Those are good qualities."
Cassius was quiet for a moment, then smiled slightly. "Perhaps you’re right, my lord. Perhaps I should... explore the possibility. When we next visit."
"Good," Satou said with satisfaction. Then he leaned back, closing his eyes. "Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to nap for the next three hours. Fighting The Reaper took a lot out of me, and I need to recover before Lyra and Jessica murder me for making them worry."
"Sleep well, my lord," Cassius said. "I’ll wake you when we reach the teleportation boundary."
As Satou drifted off to sleep, his last thought was of Seraphine’s smile. Of the genuine affection in her eyes. Of the promise of something real and lasting.
And in the Fallen Spires, Seraphine stood on the highest balcony of the central spire, watching the road until the carriage was completely out of sight.
"Come back to me," she whispered to the wind. "Soon."
Behind her, her commanders began organizing reconstruction efforts. Life in the Fallen Spires would continue. They would rebuild. They would recover.
But everything had changed.
They’d survived TheeReaper. They’d gained a powerful ally. And their lady , for the first time in three hundred years had found something worth more than any amount of collected servants.
She’d found love.
Real, genuine, terrifying, beautiful love.
And the Fallen Spires would be stronger for it.
