Chapter 260: Chapter 260 "Satou," Chronus said simply, and he saw Richard’s expression darken at the name. "The Goblin who defeated you. Who has now apparently killed Merc Assault—the legendary assassin I hired to eliminate him."


He walked closer to Richard, his multi-temporal eyes fixed on his champion. "I had hoped that hiring Merc Assault would solve our problem quietly. No direct connection to me, just an unfortunate ’accident’ that removed an irritating obstacle. But instead, that goblin survived the nightmare torture, tracked down the assassin to his own fortress, and killed him so thoroughly that nothing remains except a crater."


"Impossible," Richard said, though his voice lacked conviction. After all, Richard himself had thought defeating Satou was impossible until it happened. "Merc Assault was legendary. Centuries of successful assassinations. How could—"


"How doesn’t matter," Chronus interrupted sharply. "What matters is that Satou is now more dangerous than we initially assessed. He’s not just lucky or talented. He’s adaptive. He learns. He grows stronger with each challenge. And he has powerful allies protecting him."


Chronus turned back to the window, his appearance shifting rapidly again as he considered multiple futures simultaneously.


"Here’s what concerns me," he continued quietly. "Satou defeated you, which should have been impossible. He survived Merc Assault’s nightmare torture, which no one else has done. He then hunted down and killed that same assassin in his own fortress. Do you see the pattern, Richard?"


"He doesn’t give up," Richard said slowly. "Doesn’t accept defeat. Just adapts and comes back stronger."’


"Exactly," Chronus confirmed. "Which means he’s not going to forgive or forget what we did. Right now he’s probably focused on recovery, on securing his settlement, on building his power base. But eventually, inevitably, he’s going to turn his attention to us. To me specifically, since I’m the one who forced him into that duel and marked him as an enemy."


He faced Richard fully, his expression deadly serious.


"Satou may be more troublesome than we thought. We need to kill him now, before it’s too late. Before he becomes strong enough that even I can’t stop him."


Chronus walked back to his desk and pulled out a map of the demon realm, spreading it across the surface. Various locations were marked with different colored pins—territories, allies, enemies, strategic positions.


"I’ve been patient," Chronus said, his finger tracing routes on the map. "Playing the long game as I always do. Waiting for opportunities, building influence, accumulating power. But this situation requires a more... direct approach."


He looked up at Richard. "I want you to accelerate our plans. Everything we’ve been building toward—move it forward. Faster recruitment, more aggressive resource gathering, less concern about drawing attention. I have a bad feeling about Satou, Richard. An instinct developed over centuries that’s screaming he’s going to be a threat we can’t contain if we give him time to grow."


"The other demon lords will notice if we move too quickly," Richard pointed out, though his tone was respectful rather than argumentative. "Lord Malakor in particular watches for any signs of—"


"Let them notice," Chronus said, and there was cold determination in his voice. "Let them wonder what I’m planning. By the time they understand what’s happening, it will be too late to stop it. And Satou..." His multi-temporal eyes gleamed with malice. "Satou will be dead, removed as a threat before he can interfere with my centuries of work."


He placed both hands on the map, leaning forward over it with focused intensity.


"Speed up our plans, Richard. Contact all our agents. I want everything in position as fast as possible, we need to kill satou before he gets anymore stronger"


"Yes, sire," Richard said, bowing formally. "What about Lord Loki? He’s Satou’s sponsor, and he’s been actively working against us."


Chronus’s smile returned, cold and calculating.


"Loki has been my enemy for years. This isn’t anything new between us. He protects Satou because the goblin is useful to him, a pawn in our ongoing war. But pawns can be removed from the board. And when Satou dies, Loki will understand that his attempts to thwart me have failed once again."


He straightened, his appearance stabilizing at his most intimidating form—ancient and powerful, eyes that had seen empires rise and fall.


"Go, Richard. Begin immediately. And remember—absolute secrecy. No one outside our innermost circle can know what we’re planning. Not until the moment we strike."


"Understood, my lord," Richard said. He bowed again, then turned and left through the same temporal doorway he’d entered from.


Alone once more, Chronus walked back to his throne and sat down heavily. The crystallized time it was made from pulsed with energy, responding to his presence.


"Satou," he said quietly to the empty room. "You’ve survived more than you should have. Accomplished more than anyone expected. But you’re still young, still inexperienced in the true games that demon lords play."


He reached out and touched one of the nearby hourglasses, watching the sand flow in impossible directions.


"I’ve been playing these games for centuries. I’ve outlasted enemies who were far more dangerous than you. I’ve built schemes within schemes, plans within plans, until even I sometimes lose track of all the pieces in motion."

"I should have killed you in that arena," Chronus muttered. "Should have accepted the consequences and ended you before you became this problematic. But Malakor and the others stayed my hand."

"No matter. What’s done is done. All I can do now is adapt my plans and eliminate you before you become truly unstoppable. And this time, I won’t hire anyone else to do it. This time, I’ll handle it personally."
