A date. With Satou.

She couldn’t stop smiling.

Even her exhaustion couldn’t dampen the warm feeling spreading through her chest. Tomorrow couldn’t come fast enough.

The next day arrived with perfect weather—clear skies, gentle warmth, and a soft breeze that carried the scent of wildflowers from the nearby meadow. Satou spent most of the day in nervous preparation, which was amusing considering he’d faced down other things worse without breaking a sweat, but planning a date had him second-guessing every decision.

"You’re overthinking this," Kelvin said, watching Satou change clothes for the third time. "Just be yourself. Lyra already likes you—that’s why she asked for the date."

"I know, but..." Satou examined himself in the small mirror they’d acquired through trade. He’d settled on simple but clean clothes—a dark tunic that actually fit properly, pants that weren’t covered in training ground dust, and boots he’d actually bothered to polish. "I want this to be special. She works so hard for the settlement. She deserves an evening that’s actually enjoyable."

"Then stop worrying about your outfit and start worrying about where you’re taking her," Jessica suggested from the doorway. She held a small bundle wrapped in cloth. "Also, I made these for you. Flower crowns. One for you, one for Lyra. It’s traditional in elven culture for courting, and since we’re trying to integrate different customs, I thought it might be nice."

Satou took the crowns, examining the delicate weaving of wildflowers and herbs. "These are beautiful, Jessica. Thank you."

"Just don’t mess this up," she said with a smile. "Lyra’s been smiling all day. I haven’t seen her this happy in... ever, actually. She even took a nap this afternoon without complaining once."

"No pressure then," Satou muttered.

As the sun began its descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Satou made his way to the town square. He’d arranged for the area to be relatively clear—most residents were having dinner in their own homes or the communal dining hall, giving the square an unusual sense of privacy.

He arrived a few minutes early, the flower crown in his hands, and waited.

Then he saw her.

Lyra emerged from her quarters wearing a dress that Satou had never seen before. It was simple but elegant, dyed a soft green that complemented her skin tone, with delicate embroidery along the hem. Her hair, usually pulled back in a practical bun, was down and braided with small flowers woven through it. She’d clearly put thought into her appearance, but there was a nervousness in her posture that was endearing.

When their eyes met, her face lit up with a smile that made Satou’s heart skip.

"Hi," she said, slightly breathless as she approached.

"Hi," Satou replied, suddenly feeling like all his careful planning had evaporated from his mind. "You look... beautiful."

Lyra’s cheeks flushed pink. "Thank you. You look very handsome yourself. Is that a new tunic?"

"Sort of. I’ve had it for a while but never wore it because there was always something more practical to do." He held out the flower crown. "Jessica made this for you. Apparently, it’s an elven courting tradition."

"Oh!" Lyra took the crown carefully, her smile widening. "That’s so sweet of her." She placed it on her head, adjusting it slightly. "How does it look?"

"Perfect," Satou said honestly.

Lyra then pulled out a small scroll from a pocket in her dress. "So, I know you probably planned things, but I also made a list of activities I thought we could—"

"Lyra," Satou interrupted gently, taking the scroll from her hands. "You’re not supposed to be working, remember? That includes planning and organizing our date."

"But I wasn’t working! I was just... efficiently using my free time to ensure we have an enjoyable evening with optimal activity distribution and—" She stopped when she saw Satou’s amused expression. "I’m doing it again, aren’t I? The organizing thing."

"You are," Satou confirmed with a smile. "Which is adorable, but tonight, you’re not Chief Administrator Lyra. You’re just Lyra. And I’m just Satou. No planning, no efficiency optimization, no settlement business. Just... us. Can you do that?"

Lyra took a deep breath, visibly trying to let go of her need to control every situation. "I can try. But I spent two hours making that list, and it has very good suggestions categorized by time of day and energy level required—"

Satou unrolled the scroll and glanced at it. The list was indeed comprehensive, with activities, estimated duration, backup plans in case of weather changes, and notes about optimal lighting for various locations.

It was so thoroughly Lyra that he couldn’t help but laugh.

"Okay, compromise," he said. "We’ll use your list as suggestions, but we’re not bound by the schedule or the order. We’ll just do whatever feels right in the moment. Deal?"

"Deal," Lyra agreed, looking relieved that her planning efforts weren’t completely wasted.

Satou scanned the list quickly. "You have ’stargazing’ scheduled for 8:30 PM with a note about optimal celestial visibility. That’s definitely happening. You also have ’walking through the flower meadow’ which sounds nice. And... ’sharing favorite memories while watching the sunset’? That’s actually a great idea."

"I told you my list was good," Lyra said, a hint of pride in her voice.

"It is," Satou agreed. "But first, I had something planned that’s not on your list."

"Oh?" Lyra’s curiosity was immediate. "What is it?"

"You’ll see," Satou said, offering his arm. "May I?"

Lyra’s blush deepened, but she took his arm with a smile. "You may."

They walked through the settlement together, Satou leading her toward the eastern edge where the buildings gave way to forest. Along the way, they passed a few residents who smiled knowingly but respectfully kept their distance, giving the couple privacy.

"Everyone knows we’re on a date, don’t they?" Lyra observed.

"Probably," Satou admitted. "Jessica can’t keep secrets, and this settlement isn’t exactly large enough for privacy. Does that bother you?"

"No," Lyra said after a moment’s thought. "Actually, it’s kind of nice. Like it’s real and acknowledged, not something we have to hide."
