She’d cleaned his wounds personally, using her limited healing magic to accelerate his natural regeneration. It wasn’t much , her corruption magic was better at transforming than healing but it was something. A small way to repay the debt she now owed him.

As she worked, she found herself studying his face.

Satou was young , though something about him suggested a maturity beyond his age. His tactical thinking during the battle, his unwavering resolve, his ability to coordinate complex strategies under pressure, all of it spoke to an innate wisdom that most goblins-turned-hobgoblins wouldn’t possess.

His features were striking in their uniqueness. The iridescent scales caught the dim light, shifting colors as she moved. One eye was draconic gold, the other void-darkness—mismatched but somehow working together perfectly. His silver-streaked black hair fell across his face as he slept.

He looked peaceful. Vulnerable. Nothing like the terrifying berserker who’d fought The Reaper to a standstill.

"You’re full of contradictions," Seraphine whispered, gently brushing hair from his face. "Powerful enough to wound a legend, but you still look so young. Strategic enough to coordinate impossible battles, yet emotional enough to throw away all planning when someone’s in danger."

She traced one finger along his jaw, careful not to wake him. "You rejected my seduction attempts. Saw through my manipulation. Made it clear you weren’t interested in becoming another addition to my collection. And then you nearly died protecting me anyway. Why? Why would you do that for someone who tried to use you?"

Satou, of course, didn’t answer. He just kept breathing, his chest rising and falling steadily as his body continued its slow healing.

Seraphine found herself moving without conscious thought. She carefully lifted Satou’s head, sliding onto the bed and positioning herself so his head rested in her lap. Her fingers carded through his hair, the gesture oddly soothing for both of them.

"I’ve spent three centuries building walls," she continued, her voice barely above a whisper. "Protecting myself by keeping everyone at a distance. Using people before they could use me. Never letting anyone get close enough to hurt me. And in one day, you shattered all of that."

She looked down at him, at his peaceful sleeping face, and felt something she hadn’t experienced in longer than she could remember.

Genuine affection without calculation behind it.

"Damn you," she whispered, but there was no heat in it. "Damn you for being exactly the kind of person I didn’t know I needed."

Satou woke slowly, consciousness returning in fragments.

First came sensation, something soft beneath his head. Fingers running through his hair. The scent of corruption magic mixed with something floral.

Then came awareness, he was indoors. Safe. The battle was over.

Finally came memory—The Reaper. The fight. Running out of mana mid-strike. Collapsing.

Satou’s eyes opened, and the first thing he saw was a face looking down at him.

Seraphine.

Her mismatched eyes—one corrupted purple, one angelic blue met his with an expression he’d never seen on her face before. Not seductive. Not manipulative. Not calculating.

Just... grateful. And maybe something else. Something deeper.

"You’re awake," Seraphine said softly, her fingers pausing in his hair. "Thank Goodness. I was starting to worry you’d sleep for days."

Satou tried to sit up, but his body protested immediately. Everything hurt. He fell back into Seraphine’s lap with a groan.

"Don’t move yet," Seraphine advised, her hand gently pressing against his chest to keep him down. "Your body is still recovering. You burned through your entire mana reserve and then some. It’s going to take time before you’re back to full strength."

"The Reaper?" Satou asked, his voice hoarse.

"Gone. He left. Said we ’entertained him’ enough to earn our lives." Seraphine’s expression was complicated. "He just... walked away. Left us alive because fighting you was fun."

Satou processed that, then asked the more important question. "Your people? The Fallen Spires?"

"Everyone survived. Zero casualties among my warriors. The city is damaged but can be rebuilt. We... we won, Satou. Against impossible odds, we actually survived."

Relief flooded through Satou, and he let his head relax back into Seraphine’s lap. "Good. That’s good. I was afraid I’d failed."

"Failed?" Seraphine laughed, but it was a slightly hysterical sound. "Satou, you fought The Reaper, the strongest hero in the world to a complete standstill. You wounded him. You pushed him hard enough that he actually had to try. And you did all of that while protecting others instead of focusing solely on survival."

She looked down at him, and her eyes were suspiciously bright. "You didn’t fail. You accomplished something no one else has done in over a century. You made The Reaper acknowledge you as a worthy opponent."

"I passed out before landing the killing blow," Satou pointed out. "That seems like a failure to me."

"You passed out because you’d given everything," Seraphine corrected, her voice taking on an edge. "Every ounce of mana. Every bit of stamina. Every scrap of willpower. You fought until your body literally couldn’t continue. That’s not failure, that’s the most heroic thing I’ve ever witnessed."

Satou looked up at her, seeing the emotion in her eyes. "Why are you crying?"

"I’m not—" Seraphine started to deny, then realized tears were indeed streaming down her face. "Damn it. I don’t cry. I haven’t cried in decades. This is your fault."

"How is it my fault?"

"Because you nearly died protecting someone who tried to manipulate you! Someone who attempted to seduce you into becoming another servant in my collection! You should have let me die, should have prioritized your own survival, but instead you threw yourself into an impossible fight because you couldn’t stand to watch me get executed!"

Her voice was rising, three centuries of emotional walls cracking. "Do you have any idea how that feels? To watch someone sacrifice everything for you when you know you don’t deserve it? When you know that if positions were reversed, i wouldn’t have done the same?"

Satou reached up, his hand cupping her cheek despite the effort it took. "But you’re not the old you. You’re the person who evacuated civilians to protect them. Who stood between me and The Reaper even though you could barely stand. Who’s been sitting here for hours watching over me while I recovered. That person is worth protecting."
