Chapter 289: Authority’s edge.
They did not surrender, which Lee found predictable but still irritating because surrender would have saved everyone time and reduced paperwork, and he had never liked paperwork even when he was technically working for an academy that thrived on it.The criminals moved as a unit, not like scattered disciples trying to impress each other, but like people who had drilled this formation enough times to trust it more than instinct, and the moment they advanced Lee felt the difference in their circulation, something slightly off, not chaotic, not corrupted, but threaded with authority that did not belong to them.
Trexian’s influence.
Lee felt it like a familiar headache returning after you thought you had finally gotten rid of it.
"Don’t let them touch you." He said without raising his voice, because shouting wouldn’t change physics.
Karn grinned, already charging. "Great advice." He said.
Osrick’s water flared into motion, not graceful this time, just efficient, cutting space between them and the first wave of attacks, and Lee stepped forward to meet the formation head-on, because letting them control distance would only make the Nullite work worse.
The first clash happened fast and close, blades scraping, threads of Nullite slicing through air like invisible wire, and Lee felt one of them graze his shoulder, the disruption biting into his circulation hard enough to remind him that even after breaking the seal he was still made of flesh.
He cut one down cleanly and pivoted, space folding just enough to place him behind another attacker, and he drove his blade through the man’s core before the formation could re-stabilize.
They adjusted, which impressed him slightly.
The leader pulled a carved stone from the crate and threw it into the air, and Lee didn’t need to ask what it was because the air itself tightened in response.
"That’s a beacon." Osrick said.
"To a headache." Lee answered.
Space split open cleanly, and Panello stepped through. She looked at the bodies first, then at Lee, and then at Karn and Livia like she was evaluating inventory.
"You brought company." She said.
Lee rolled his shoulder once, ignoring the sting from the embedded shards, and said, "You weren’t invited."
"You killed my son." She said.
There was no tremor in it, no theatrical grief, just the statement of an unfinished account.
Karn shifted beside him. Lee lifted a hand without looking. "Don’t." He said.
Panello’s authority expanded, subtle but heavy, and Lee felt the phantom burn on his palm where the seal had once anchored, which annoyed him more than it frightened him because he had already dealt with that Chapter of his life.
"This is an official mission." Lee said. "Step away."
Panello’s lips curved slightly, and she said, "Still hiding behind institutions."
"I’m hiding behind my schedule." Lee answered, "I’m busy."
Then she attacked.
Panello did not waste time with spectacle. Her strikes were aimed, deliberate, and every second one targeted Lee’s palm as if the seal still existed and she expected it to answer her call.
The first hit didn’t break bone, but it sent a jolt through his Dantian strong enough that his sparks surged in protest, the old internal friction rising like static that had never quite left him.
Karn slammed into Panello from the side with earth wrapped around his fists, and she dismissed him with a wave of authority that knocked him into the cavern wall hard enough to shake dust loose from the ceiling.
Livia’s water lashed around Panello’s leg and tightened, but Trexian’s threaded authority cut through it like it was only pretending to matter.
Lee stepped in close, because distance favored her domain pressure, and he let space twist around his movement just enough to slip inside her guard and cut across her shoulder.
Blood burned against the air.
Panello didn’t retreat.
"You were never meant to carry more than one." She said quietly. "Trexian only delayed the inevitable."
Lee exhaled once, because he had heard variations of that sentence too many times. "Yeah." He said. "I get that a lot."
She struck his palm directly.
Pain shot up his arm like molten metal poured into bone, and this time the sparks did not merely protest, they roared, colliding in a way that made his vision narrow and the cavern tilt.
For a second he almost forced separation out of habit.
Then he stopped.
Panello leaned closer, her voice low. "Trexian will correct you." She said.
Lee looked at her through the distortion and found he wasn’t angry, just tired of being corrected.
"I’m not broken." He said.
He released control just enough to stop fighting the internal surge.
The sparks aligned without his interference, not perfectly, not neatly, but in a way that created a narrow window where Panello’s authority lost its precise grip.
He stepped through space and drove his blade into the center of her core.
She froze, more surprised than afraid.
"You..." She began.
Lee twisted the blade.
Her core shattered.
Panello collapsed, and the authority in the cavern lifted instantly, but the relief lasted less than a breath because the pressure inside Lee did not subside, it intensified, the old pattern of five distinct rotations finally giving way under accumulated strain.
"Great." He muttered, and then the internal structure gave way completely and he fell.
There was no void, no grand revelation, just a clear sequence of memory arranged like notes laid out on a table.
Lee saw his past lives not as tragedies or victories but as structural decisions, each one adding another layer of complexity he had mistaken for strength.
Lisa appeared among them, not as a dream or reward, but as a constant point he had tried to reach by building more and more unstable scaffolding around himself.
The Life spark pulsed.
Not dramatically, not heroically, simply reacting to the collapse of his Dantian the way it was meant to react to preserve continuity.
The five sparks surged.
For once, he did not try to force them apart.
Fire stopped resisting water because resistance no longer had a purpose, wind ceased scattering earth because nothing needed to be scattered, space stopped being a weapon and became a frame, and life and death stopped pretending they were opposites and recognized themselves as parts of a single process.
The internal noise faded because there were no longer five separate rotations competing for dominance.
The Dantian compressed, not exploding outward but condensing inward, boundaries thinning until Lee could no longer identify individual sparks, and then there was nothing left to identify because there was only one unified core occupying the center of his cultivation.
The phantom burn on his palm vanished entirely, the structural anchors of the old seal rendered meaningless by the absence of separate fragments to bind.
Lee’s breathing stabilized.
When he opened his eyes, the cavern was unchanged, Panello’s body still on the ground, Nullite shards still embedded in his skin, but the internal friction that had followed him across lifetimes was gone.
He stood up slowly, testing the new equilibrium.
"Finally." He said, "That was getting old."
Space tore open again.
Trexian stepped through with two Sovereigns behind him, their presence compressing the cavern in a way that would have suffocated anyone less stubborn than Lee.
Trexian looked at Panello first, then at Lee, and his gaze held calculation rather than grief.
"You destabilized containment." He said.
Lee shrugged slightly, and said, "Looks like it."
Trexian extended his hand toward Lee’s palm and invoked the old binding pattern. Nothing responded. He tried again, deeper, targeting the structural lattice embedded through lifetimes. There was nothing to attach to.
"You altered the structure." Trexian said.
Lee tilted his head, and said, "I got tired of breaking."
