121: Chapter 121 Rowling, Toby, the Wizard.
Zhang Mu, with an Owl perched on each shoulder, followed Toby down the elevator.
It couldn't exactly be called following.
With his Shadow Technique active, he had been walking side-by-side with the other man.
Once outside, Toby hurriedly climbed into the driver's seat, and Zhang Mu followed, sitting in the back.
Watching the silhouette of Toby turning the steering wheel to reverse the car, unsure of where they were going, Zhang Mu lost himself in thought regarding what had happened earlier.
Luckily, he had thought to run a test; as expected, a single spiritual Owl wasn't enough, and he needed to add some suitable magic.
Well... powerful magic required finding new materials, but Mental Energy was much more convenient—he just needed to make some minor adjustments to the Magic Array's structure.
He would buy tools first thing tomorrow morning and return to the hotel to make the changes. As for today...
Zhang Mu's blurred vision cleared as he observed Toby, who was frantically overtaking other cars.
He looked a bit familiar. Oh right, he was one of the two people Zhang Mu had met at a restaurant during his last visit to London.
The department on his ID was the CIA. Wasn't that Ying Country's official intelligence department? Did they handle supernatural events too?
Forget it, it's not important.
In any case, it was certain that he could reach the upper echelons of Ying Country's officialdom through him.
That said, he was driving like he was about to take off. Where was he going?
Suppressing his inner doubts, Zhang Mu watched as the car drove all the way to a villa district located in the suburbs.
The villa district wasn't very large, consisting of about a dozen five-story western-style buildings with courtyards. It was divided into left and right sections, with an artificial river flowing through the middle.
As the car approached the gate barrier, a security guard in a black suit and trousers walked to the side of the car clutching a registry.
Perhaps because the residents were all 'big shots,' the property management had spent quite a bit of money, and the security guard was very thorough in his questioning.
Upon learning that Toby did not have an appointment, he decisively refused his request to enter the community.
Toby then pulled out his CIA ID, and the security guard obediently pressed the round button on his remote control.
The barrier lifted, and Toby lightly stepped on the gas, slowly driving through.
The car moved slowly along the asphalt road inside the community, while Zhang Mu scanned the villas on both sides through the car window from the back seat.
So he had come to find Ms. Rowling.
Through Toby's conversation with the security guard just now, Zhang Mu knew his purpose for coming here, and some ideas began to form in his mind.
He hadn't intended to reveal himself yet, but plans often fail to keep pace with changes; he would have to think over his words for later.
Toby, holding the steering wheel, was naturally unaware that a living person was sitting in the back of the car thinking about how to approach him; he remained focused on driving.
Although he drove very slowly within the community, the area wasn't that expansive to begin with.
After about five minutes, the car stopped in front of the courtyard gate of a villa with pure white exterior walls, sleeping quietly in the night.
Getting out of the car without even having time to close the door, Toby strode around the vehicle and rang the doorbell.
Likely due to the late hour, the doorbell was rung for ten minutes before a dim light finally flickered on in a dark villa window.
"Sir, disturbing a lady's sleep in the early hours of the morning is not the behavior of a gentleman."
An indignant female voice came through the perforated part of the digital lock.
"Ms. Rowling, I have some things I hope you can look at. You will definitely be interested."
"I'm sorry, sir, I have no interest in anything you have to say. If there's anything else, please make an appointment with me in advance and come back tomorrow."
After a burst of static that sounded like signal interference, the digital lock went silent, and the light in the second-floor window of the villa went out.
But Toby had no intention of giving up and continued to ring the doorbell.
It seemed Ms. Rowling had notified property management, as two security guards clutching tasers walked quickly from a distance.
Before they could even speak, they were warded off by his ID.
It was possible the departing security guards informed Ms. Rowling of the specific situation.
Half an hour later, the courtyard light above the villa's main entrance turned on, and the iron courtyard gate automatically slid open inward.
Clutching a 'wad' of a suit jacket, Toby excitedly rushed toward the already open villa door and walked into the living room.
Ms. Rowling was already waiting for him.
Ms. Rowling, who was 58 years old this year, had well-maintained skin.
Her face had only faint wrinkles that couldn't be noticed without careful observation. She likely maintained a fitness habit in her daily life, as her figure showed none of the bloat one would expect at her age.
Her cultivation and manners were also excellent.
Having one's deep sleep interrupted by a doorbell in the early hours, and then having that person continue to ring it even after a clear refusal to meet—any normal person would likely not give them a friendly face.
But when Toby entered the hall, Ms. Rowling was already dressed in formal attire for receiving guests—a tight evening gown that was extremely troublesome to put on.
Her face was adorned with light makeup, and her two earrings sparkled under the bright white chandelier.
Applying makeup and wearing jewelry was not merely for her own beauty, but also a sign of respect for her guest.
On the low coffee table in front of the living room sofa, there were two cups of steaming black tea.
"Please sit down, Mr. Toby."
She raised her hand with an elegant posture. Only after Toby sat in the single-seater on the right did she sit in the middle of the three-seater sofa with her legs together, smoothing her skirt.
"Mr. Toby, exactly what treasure is it that you had to see me at this hour?"
Toby spread the suit jacket on the table and unrolled the tightly tied sleeves to flatten the coat. "These are Owl feathers!"
Perhaps because he was too excited, his words were somewhat slurred.
At the very least, the reason of 'Owl feathers' was not enough for Ms. Rowling to forgive his rude act of visiting unannounced in the middle of the night.
"As you can see," her chest heaved sharply, "they are indeed Owl feathers. And then?"
"Uh, listen to me, Ms. Rowling, these are feathers left behind by an Owl raised by a Magician!"
Ms. Rowling: "?"
No matter how good her upbringing was, she couldn't hold back anymore: "Mr. Toby, look at what you're saying!
Good God, for a pile of Owl feathers, you're like a gambler who has lost all his property and his mind, frantically ringing someone's doorbell in the middle of the night,
disturbing a 58-year-old lady's beauty sleep used to maintain her skin?!
Even bringing up absurd fairy tales that have already circulated everywhere on internet platforms to coax children to sleep as evidence for yourself?!"
Toby really wanted to say that these weren't absurd fairy tales, they were the settings from the novels she had created.
But seeing the blood-red flush rising in Ms. Rowling's cheeks, he simply didn't dare to say it.
"Alright, Mr. Toby. Now, finish this cup of tea and then offer a sincere apology to the lady you have offended!"
"But I'm telling the truth."
After being blasted by her powerful aura, Toby spoke weakly, repeating the sequence of events once more.
However, judging by Ms. Rowling's clenched fists, the explanation did nothing to soothe her anger; instead, it caused the atmosphere to become even more somber.
Ms. Rowling's expression was now cold enough to freeze: "So, you still insist on using rumors spread all over the world in an attempt to gloss over your own rudeness?"
Taking a deep breath, she tried her best to calm herself: "I have a word of advice.
Mr. Toby, you are an investigator for the CIA. Although you belong to a minor, obscure department under the CIA, you are ultimately a public servant dedicated to the Kingdom.
The rumors that magicians exist in the world can be easily believed by the masses who lack sufficient independent thinking skills, but you cannot!"
The reason Toby had rushed directly to see Ms. Rowling was to use the physical evidence to ask about the magician's whereabouts.
Thinking carefully, he realized he indeed didn't have any evidence like a video, and the feathers hadn't been tested yet.
Smiling awkwardly, he planned to apologize and leave, intending to make proper preparations before visiting again.
"Anger will only add to the burden on your body.
We meet again, Rowling."
