97: Chapter 97 David Goes Mad and Breaks into the House! Attempts to Destroy Evidence but is Stopped

David left behind a harsh threat and turned to leave.

He stumbled out of the cafe. The cold night wind whipped against his face, but it could not extinguish the madness and despair in his heart. His family had abandoned him, Lin Chen had rejected him, and the evidence had locked him in. Standing on the empty street, David threw his head back and let out a roar like a wild beast, his eyes filled with the desperation of someone with nothing left to lose.

Begging was useless, hiding was useless, and trying to pay his way out was useless. David gritted his teeth, only one thought remaining in his mind—destroy the evidence! As long as he destroyed all the files, hard drives, and backups in Chen Xi's possession, Lin Chen would have no way to deal with him, and he would still have a glimmer of hope!

As soon as this thought emerged, it crushed the last shred of his sanity. David hailed a taxi and gave the address of Chen Xi's apartment complex. He curled up in the backseat, his eyes sinister and fierce, completely lost to madness.

He dared not use the main entrance. He hid behind the shrubbery, waiting for the patrolling security guard to walk away before sneaking into the apartment building. The stairwell leading to Chen Xi's floor was dimly lit, the motion-sensor lights flickering off from time to time. In the silent stairwell, only David's rapid, ragged breathing could be heard, sounding particularly eerie.

He had long since figured out which floor Chen Xi lived on. He clenched his fists and crept upward, with only one thought in his heart: charge in, smash the computer, tear up the documents, destroy the hard drives, and wipe the evidence clean!

But just as he reached the corridor outside Chen Xi's door, a dark figure suddenly stepped out from the fire exit.

It was Li Wei!

Lin Chen had long anticipated that David would act recklessly out of desperation, so before leaving, he had specifically instructed Li Wei to guard the stairwell and never leave his post. Li Wei had been leaning against the wall, remaining alert the entire time; the moment David came upstairs, he had sensed the movement.

"Stop right there!"

With a low shout, Li Wei blocked the entrance to Chen Xi's home like a fierce tiger, his gaze sharp as a blade, staring fixedly at David.

David was startled. Upon realizing it was Li Wei, he didn't feel fear; instead, he became even more frantic. With red eyes, he roared, "Get out of my way! If I'm going down, you aren't getting off easy either! I have to destroy that evidence today, and I'll fight to the death with anyone who tries to stop me!"

"If you dare to touch Attorney Chen or the evidence, you'll have to get past me first!" Li Wei did not retreat even half a step. With his arms crossed and an imposing presence, he knew that for someone as pampered as David, he could subdue him with one hand.

David had completely lost his mind. Knowing he couldn't win, he still roared and charged forward, reaching out to push Li Wei in an attempt to break through the door.

"You're asking for it!"

Li Wei let out a cold snort, dodged to the side, and backhanded David's wrist. With a slight application of force, David immediately grimaced in pain and let out a miserable shriek. Yet, he still refused to give up. He waved his other hand wildly and kicked violently at the door, screaming madly, "I'm going to destroy the evidence! If I have to, I'll take you down with me!"

The two of them immediately became locked in a struggle. David fought desperately, using both his hands and feet, but he couldn't get close to Li Wei at all. The commotion in the stairwell was loud, and Chen Xi heard it immediately from inside the apartment.

Inside Chen Xi's room, files, contracts, and backup hard drives were neatly arranged. Because David's commotion had been so loud, a few pages of documents had been shaken to the floor, making things look a bit chaotic. Chen Xi did not panic in the slightest; her gaze was calm and decisive. She didn't open the door to investigate, but instead picked up her phone and immediately dialed the police.

"Officer, someone is breaking into a private residence here and attempting to violently destroy important evidence. The address is..." Chen Xi's tone was steady as she clearly stated the address and the situation. She showed no signs of panic throughout the call, and after she finished, she hung up and guarded the door, ensuring her own safety.

Hearing the report to the police, David outside the door panicked instantly. He knew that once the police arrived, he would be completely finished. He struggled even more violently, trying like a madman to break free from Li Wei's control.

Li Wei held him down firmly, but he didn't dare to use excessive force to truly injure him, wanting only to wait for the police to arrive and take the person away.

Just as the sound of police sirens approached from afar and was about to reach the apartment complex entrance, David seized the moment of Li Wei's distraction, exerted a sudden burst of strength to break free, and scrambled down the stairs. He fled in panic through the side gate of the complex and disappeared into the night.

Li Wei chased after him for a few steps, but remembering that he had to guard Chen Xi and the evidence, he immediately stopped and returned to stand guard at the door.

Hearing that the commotion outside had ceased, Chen Xi gently opened the door and looked at Li Wei. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine. He got away, but I've already noted the direction he fled in, so we can follow up at any time," Li Wei said in a deep voice.

Chen Xi nodded, turned back into the room, bent down to pick up the files on the floor, and reorganized them. The electronic evidence on the computer, the paper documents on the table, and the three backup hard drives were all intact, without the slightest damage.

She categorized and packed up all the evidence, sealing it properly, her gaze firm.

With the complete evidence in hand, Chen Xi prepared for the upcoming court date.
