158: Chapter 158 The Establishment of the Mysterious Pivot

Lu Mingyuan stood within Zixiao Palace. Behind him lay Chaos; before him stood the Seven Saints. Violet light descended from the palace roof, illuminating him and also the Seven Saints. He stood there, his heart profoundly still. Still as the night in Heyin, still as the dawn upon Zhongnan Mountain, still as the dusk before The Rift. Yet within that stillness, there was something. All the paths he had walked, all the places he had stood, all the things he had done, all the people he had seen, all the tears he had shed, all the moments he had laughed.

Laozi looked at him. "Establish your Dao." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "Alright."

He took a step forward. That step was light. Light as the wind. Yet within that wind, there was something. The step he took when leaving Heyin, the step he took when setting foot upon Zhongnan Mountain, the step he took when entering the Three Mountains of Daoism, the step he took when stepping into the Three Temples of Buddhism, the step he took when crossing into the Three Academies of Confucianism, the step he took when entering the Three Sects of Martial Arts, the step he took when standing before The Rift, the step he took when entering Zixiao Palace, the step he took when walking into Chaos, the step he took when traversing his Heart Demon, the step he took when Ming Xin and seeing his true nature.

All those steps were within this one step. This step had taken many years. Yet this step was just a single step.

He took another step forward. "My Dao is called Xuan Shu." His voice fell within Zixiao Palace. That voice was light. Light as the wind. Yet within that wind, there was something. The path he had begun walking from Heyin, the truth he had realized after standing before The Rift for two years, the answer he had obtained after debating six times within Zixiao Palace, the thing he had walked out of after journeying so long within Chaos.

Within Zixiao Palace, there was an echo. That echo was not sound, but light. The light of Zixiao Palace, the light of the Seven Saints, the light of the Heavenly Dao, and the light of his own heart. Those lights fell upon him, fell into his heart, fell upon the Dao he had walked out.

He took another step forward. "The heart is the Xuan Shu. The pivot is the axis of a door. The door opens and closes, but the pivot does not move. Yet the pivot connects to the door, and the door connects to heaven and earth. The heart is that pivot. When the heart does not move, all dharmas return of themselves. When the heart moves, all dharmas are born of themselves."

His voice echoed within Zixiao Palace. The Seven Saints did not speak, only watched him. Watching this young man who had come from the Dharma-Ending Age, watching this cultivator who had crawled out from The Rift, watching this seeker of the Dao who had walked out from Chaos, watching this one who had Ming Xin and emerged from his Heart Demon.

He took another step forward. "But the heart is not unmoving either. The heart will move, the heart will open, the heart will close. When it moves, all dharmas are born. When it opens, the door opens. When it closes, the door closes. But the pivot remains that pivot."

He paused. "My Dao is that pivot. Not unmoving, but not leaving. Not unmoving, but not losing. Not unmoving, but not forgetting. When moving, know you are moving. When opening, know you are opening. When closing, know you are closing. To know is the pivot. To know is the heart. To know is the Dao."

He took another step forward. That step landed on the ground. The floor of Zixiao Palace brightened. Not from light shining upon it, but the ground itself glowing. Zixiao Palace was responding to him, the Heavenly Dao was responding to him, all dharmas were responding to him.

He took another step forward. "My Dao comes from the Dharma-Ending Age. In the Dharma-Ending Age, Spiritual Qi is sparse, cultivation is difficult. Some say that is the end of dharma, the end of Dao, the end of everything. But I walked out from the Dharma Ending Age. Because I had a path in my heart. With a path in the heart, dharma does not end. With a path in the heart, Dao does not end. With a path in the heart, nothing ends."

He took another step forward. "My Dao comes from The Rift. The Rift is the accumulation of the resentment from the Seven Great Calamities, the projection of the Heavenly Dao's deficiency, the wound of countless calamities. I stood before The Rift for two years, watching Loose Cultivators die, watching demon soldiers charge, watching the fissure expand. I thought I had to block them. But later I understood, it cannot be blocked. The resentment is too great, the wound too deep, the deficiency too vast. What can be done is not to block, but to mend. Not to oppose, but to complete. Not to eradicate, but to transform."

He took another step forward. "My Dao comes from Zixiao Palace. Here, I debated six times. Daoism asked me if the heart is a passage or a path; I said it is both. The Jie Sect asked me what to do if I stand in the wrong place; I said one must still stand even if wrong. Buddhism asked me where the path to life lies when people die one by one; I said it lies with the last person standing. The Human Sect asked me about action or inaction; I said action is also inaction. The Loose Immortal asked me about freedom or non-freedom; I said when the heart has something, one need not think of freedom. In summary, I said, the Dao has no high or low, but people have delusion and enlightenment. After six debates, I understood one thing—debate is not for winning, but for making the principle clearer. Clearer, to walk the path better."

He took another step forward. "My Dao comes from Chaos. Within Chaos, the Seven Saints transmitted their Dao to me. Laozi transmitted the One to me, Tongtian transmitted the Jie to me, Jieyin and Zhunti transmitted Emptiness and Being to me, Nüwa transmitted Creation to me, Houtu transmitted Reincarnation to me, Yuanshi transmitted Order to me. Those Daos are all within my heart. Each in its place, each fulfilling its function."

He took another step forward. "My Dao comes from the Heart Demon. Fear, doubt, attachment, self—four Heart Demons, passed one by one. When fearing, I knew what I feared. When doubting, I knew what I questioned. When attached, I knew what I desired. When self, I knew who I was. I am not anyone; I am the one walking the path. I am the one who is walking. I am the path, the footprint, the thing left behind."

He took another step forward. "My Dao comes from Songyun. Nine hundred years ago, Daoist Songyun carved 'The Heart Is the Pivot' upon the wall of Zixiao Palace. He asked me—after the heart is the Xuan Shu, what then? I walked for nine hundred years, walked here, and finally can answer him."

He stopped, looking ahead. Ahead were not the Seven Saints, but the wall of Zixiao Palace. On that wall were characters. Carved by Daoist Songyun nine hundred years ago. "The Heart Is the Pivot." He stood there, looking at those three characters. Then, he spoke.

"After the heart is the Xuan Shu—it is still the heart. Not the original heart, but the heart after walking. The heart emptied after containing all dharmas. The heart purified after passing fear, doubt, attachment, and self. The heart illuminated through and through after Ming Xin and seeing true nature. The heart that must continue walking after establishing the Dao. After the heart is the Xuan Shu, the heart is the Xuan Shu. Having walked, it is still the heart. Having arrived, it is still the heart. Having succeeded, it is still the heart. Because the heart is that pivot. The pivot does not move, nor does the heart. But the heart not moving does not mean not walking. It is walking, yet the pivot does not move. It is moving, yet the heart does not leave."

His voice fell within Zixiao Palace. That voice was light. Light as the wind. Yet within that wind, there was something. Daoist Songyun's nine-hundred-year wait, his own nine-hundred-year walk, the entrustment of the Seven Saints' transmission of the Dao, the lives of Iron Ox and those Loose Cultivators, the two-year vigil before The Rift, the six debates within Zixiao Palace, the countless steps walked within Chaos, the four confrontations within the Heart Demon, the clarity of the moment of Ming Xin and seeing true nature.

On the wall of Zixiao Palace, Daoist Songyun's characters brightened. Not from light shining upon them, but the characters themselves glowing. Daoist Songyun was responding to him, nine hundred years were responding to him, "The Heart Is the Pivot" was responding to him. Within that brightness, there were characters. New characters grew from the old ones. Like flowers growing from soil, like light growing from the heart.

"After the heart is the Xuan Shu, it is still the heart. Good."

That character "Good" landed on the wall. Beside the characters Daoist Songyun carved nine hundred years ago. The characters of two generations, separated by nine hundred years, on the same wall, glowing.

Lu Mingyuan stood there, looking at that wall. His eyes reddened, not from sorrow, but from the relief of finally having completed a task. He turned and looked at the Seven Saints. The Seven Saints looked at him, their gazes full of approval.

Laozi spoke. "Your Dao is complete." Tongtian nodded. "Complete." Jieyin said, "Xuan-shu Path." Zhunti said, "The heart is the Xuan Shu." Nüwa said, "You walked so long, finally you have walked it to completion." Houtu said, "Once complete, you are no longer you. You are the Dao." Yuanshi said, "It is the Dao, and it is you. Dao and you are not two. Just as the heart and pivot are not two."

Laozi looked at him. "Do you have words to say?" Lu Mingyuan thought. Then, he spoke. "I have words. Not for the Seven Saints. For everyone. For the Three Mountains of Daoism, for the Three Temples of Buddhism, for the Three Academies of Confucianism, for the Three Sects of Martial Arts. For the Loose Cultivators at The Rift, for the myriad immortals within Zixiao Palace, for those walking within Chaos, for those unable to pass through their Heart Demons."

He paused. "The Dao has no high or low, but people have delusion and enlightenment. In delusion, one thinks one's own Dao is the only Dao. In enlightenment, one knows all dharmas share the same source, different paths lead to the same destination. Where does it lead? To the heart. The heart is the Xuan Shu. The pivot is the axis of a door. The door opens and closes, but the pivot does not move. Yet the pivot connects to the door, and the door connects to heaven and earth. The heart is that pivot. When the heart does not move, all dharmas return of themselves. When the heart moves, all dharmas are born of themselves. But the heart is not unmoving either. The heart will move, the heart will open, the heart will close. When it moves, all dharmas are born. When it opens, the door opens. When it closes, the door closes. But the pivot remains that pivot."

He looked at the Seven Saints. "This is my Dao. Xuan-shu Path."

Within Zixiao Palace, there was a deep silence. That silence was profound. Profound as Chaos. Yet within that Chaos, there was light. The light of the Seven Saints, the light of Zixiao Palace, the light of the Heavenly Dao, the light of his own heart. Those lights fell upon him, fell into his heart, fell upon the Dao he had walked out.

Then, within that silence, there was a voice. Not the voice of the Seven Saints, not the voice of Zixiao Palace, not the voice of the Heavenly Dao. A voice from the depths of Chaos. The voice of Hongjun.

"Good."

A single character came from the depths of Chaos. Passing through Chaos, passing through Zixiao Palace, passing through the Seven Saints, landing upon him. That single character was light. Light as the wind. Yet within that wind, there was something. The acknowledgment of the Heavenly Dao, the allegiance of all dharmas, the legitimization of the Dao lineage.

Lu Mingyuan stood there, under that falling character. He did not move, only stood. Standing there, he suddenly recalled a saying. That saying was spoken by Master Xuanweizi. "Cultivation is walking a path. Walk the path beneath your feet well, and you will naturally know how to walk afterward."

He understood now. He had walked so many paths, stood so long, done so many things, realized so many Daos, passed through so many demons, Ming Xin and seen his true nature, established his Dao and completed it—yet the path remained. Still to be walked. Because walking is the Dao. Standing is not the Dao. Completion is not the Dao. Walking is the Dao.

He smiled. That smile was light. Light as the wind. Yet within that wind, there was something. The steadiness of finally knowing the path is still long.

Laozi looked at him. "Having established the Dao, you must practice the Dao. To practice the Dao, you must walk the path. To walk the path, you must keep walking." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know." Tongtian looked at him. "Practicing the Dao is not walking alone. It is leading others to walk together." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know." Jieyin looked at him. "Practicing the Dao is not walking fast. It is walking long." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know." Zhunti looked at him. "Practicing the Dao is not reaching. It is walking." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know." Nüwa looked at him. "Practicing the Dao is not creating. It is letting what should be born be born, what should grow grow, what should live live." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know." Houtu looked at him. "Practicing the Dao is not gathering. It is receiving. Continuously receiving." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know." Yuanshi looked at him. "Practicing the Dao is not setting rules. It is guarding what should be guarded, changing what should be changed." Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I know."

The Seven Saints looked at him, their gazes full of approval.

Laozi smiled. "Then go." Lu Mingyuan asked, "Where to?" Laozi said, "Return to the Mortal world. Your Dao is in the Mortal world. Not in Zixiao Palace." Tongtian said, "Return to The Rift. Your Dao is at The Rift. Not in Chaos." Jieyin said, "Return to the side of those standing. Your Dao is upon them. Not here with the Saints." Zhunti said, "Return among those walking. Your Dao is beneath their feet. Not within the Dao lineage." Nüwa said, "Return to those living beings. Your Dao is in their hearts. Not within Creation." Houtu said, "Return to those who have died. Your Dao is upon them. Not within Reincarnation." Yuanshi said, "Return to the place you came from. Your Dao came from there. Must also return there."

Lu Mingyuan stood there, listening. Listening, he smiled. "Alright. Return to the Mortal world. Return to The Rift. Return to the side of those standing. Return among those walking. Return to those living beings. Return to those who have died. Return to the place I came from."

He turned and walked toward the exit of Zixiao Palace. After two steps, he suddenly stopped. He did not look back. "Esteemed Seniors, this Disciple has one more thing to say." Laozi asked, "What is it?" Lu Mingyuan said, "Xuan-shu Path is not in Zixiao Palace. It is in the Mortal world. Not here with the Saints. It is with the Mortals. Not within the Dao lineage. It is beneath the feet of those walking. Upon the bodies of those standing. In the hearts of those living. In the light of those who have died." He paused. "This Disciple departs. Returns to the Mortal world. To walk the path."

Then, he stepped. Out of Zixiao Palace. Into Chaos. Toward the Mortal world.

Within Zixiao Palace, the Seven Saints watched him leave. No one spoke. Only their gazes followed him. Followed him into Chaos. Followed him toward the Mortal world. Followed him toward the place he should go. Finally, his figure disappeared into Chaos.

Laozi spoke. "He has succeeded." Tongtian nodded. "Succeeded." Jieyin said, "Xuan-shu Path has succeeded." Zhunti said, "The heart as the Xuan Shu has succeeded." Nüwa said, "He walked so long, finally succeeded." Houtu said, "He has succeeded, but the path is still long." Yuanshi said, "The path is still long, but he knows how to walk it now." Laozi smiled. "Let's go. We should also go. Return to our places, walk our paths." Tongtian smiled. "Yes. Walk our paths." Jieyin smiled. "Walk." Zhunti smiled. "Walk." Nüwa smiled. "Walk." Houtu smiled. "Walk." Yuanshi smiled. "Walk."

The Seven Saints walked out from Zixiao Palace. Into Chaos. Toward their respective Dao grounds. Toward their respective paths. Zixiao Palace was empty. Only the characters on that wall still glowed. Daoist Songyun's "The Heart Is the Pivot," Lu Mingyuan's "After the heart is the Xuan Shu, it is still the heart. Good." The characters of two generations, separated by nine hundred years, on the same wall, glowing. Bright as the heart. Bright as the pivot. Bright as the Dao. Bright as those walking.

Within Chaos, Lu Mingyuan walked. Toward the Mortal world, toward The Rift, toward those standing, toward those walking, toward those living beings, toward those who had died, toward the place he should go.

He walked. Step by step. Not fast, not slow. Just walking.

Walking, he suddenly recalled a saying. That saying was his own. "Xuan-shu Path is not in Zixiao Palace. It is in the Mortal world." He smiled. That smile was light. Light as the wind. Yet within that wind, there was something. The steadiness of finally knowing where the Dao lies. He walked. Step by step. Toward that Mortal world, toward that Rift, toward the place he should go.
