160: Chapter 160 Myriad Worlds
Within Chaos, Lu Mingyuan walked.
He walked through the Spirit Severing Lightning Tribulation, through the seven bolts of heavenly thunder, and through the pain and tears of the Seven Great Calamities. Those things had not disappeared; they were still upon him, still in his heart, and still on the Dao he had forged. But they no longer weighed him down, no longer struck him, and no longer questioned him. They had become a part of him, a part of his walk, a part of his stance, and a part of his life.
As he walked, he suddenly felt something sprout from his heart. It was not a gradual growth, but a sudden eruption, like a seed buried deep in the soil for a very long time, finally waiting for its day to grow, suddenly breaking through the earth, suddenly branching out with foliage, and suddenly growing into a world.
Wanxiang Heaven and Earth. The world formed by his heart's light, the world formed by his Dao, the world formed by the path he had walked. That world emerged from his heart, falling beneath his feet, falling into every step he had taken, and falling into every step he was about to take.
He stopped and looked at that world. That world was vast, as vast as Chaos. That world was small, as small as a grain of dust. That world was bright, as bright as the sun. That world was dark, as dark as the night. Everything of his was in that world. There was the room in Heyin City, the ancient temple on Zhongnan Mountain, the gates of the Three Mountains of Daoism, the ancestral courts of the Three Temples of Buddhism, the academies of the Three Academies of Confucianism, and the martial arts arenas of the Three Sects of Martial Arts. There was the defensive position before The Rift, the prayer mat in Zixiao Palace, every footprint in Chaos, and every duel within the Heart Demon. There was Tie Niu, those Loose Cultivators, Zhang Lingyun, Fa Ming, Li Haoran, and Yue Wushuang. There were Sun Wukong, Yang Jian, and Nezha. There were Laozi, Tongtian, Jieyin, Zhunti, Nüwa, Houtu, and Yuanshi. There were his Master Xuanweizi and Daoist Songyun.
All those people were in that world. Living in that world, walking in that world, standing in that world. It was not a living after death, but a living while truly alive, a walking while walking, and a standing while standing.
That world contained the Dao of the Seven Saints. Laozi's "One" was at the root, Tongtian's "Severance" was on the road, the "Emptiness and Existence" of Jieyin and Zhunti were in the heart, Nüwa's "Creation" was in the hands, Houtu's "Reincarnation" was in the earth, and Yuanshi's "Order" was in everything. Those Daos were all in that world, each returning to its place and each serving its purpose. They were not Daos taken from others, but the Dao he had walked out himself. It was the Dao that grew on its own after walking so many paths, standing for so long, doing so many things, realizing so many truths, overcoming so many demons, establishing the Xuan-shu Path, and crossing the Spirit Severing Lightning Tribulation.
That world contained the pain of the Seven Great Calamities. The sacrifice of the Heaven-Opening Great Tribulation, the fear of the Ferocious Beast Great Tribulation, the resentment of the Dragon-Phoenix Great Tribulation, the shattering of the Witch-Demon Calamity, the trauma of the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, the helplessness of the Journey to the West Great Tribulation, and the collapse of the Dharma-Ending Kalpa. Those pains were in that world, and in that world, they were no longer pain, but paths. They were the path formed by the sacrifice of the Heaven-Opening Great Tribulation, the path formed by the fear of the Ferocious Beast Great Tribulation, the path formed by the resentment of the Dragon-Phoenix Great Tribulation, the path formed by the shattering of the Witch-Demon Calamity, the path formed by the trauma of the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, the path formed by the helplessness of the Journey to the West Great Tribulation, and the path formed by the collapse of the Dharma-Ending Kalpa.
That world contained the light of those who had died. Tie Niu's light, the light of the Loose Cultivators, the light of the Jie Sect Disciples, the light of the Witch and Yao Races, the light of the Dragon Clan and Phoenix, and the light of the Three Thousand Demon Gods. Those lights were all in that world, and in that world, they were no longer dark, but bright. It was the brightness in Tie Niu's eyes when he blocked the blade for him, the brightness in the eyes of the Loose Cultivators when they died standing, the brightness in the eyes of the Jie Sect Disciples when they fell, the brightness in the eyes of the Witches and Yao when they perished, the brightness in the eyes of the Dragons and Phoenixes when they died in battle, and the brightness in the eyes of the Demon Gods when they dissipated. Those sparks were lit, and once lit, they were not dead, but alive. They lived in his heart, lived on his Dao, and lived in his world.
That world contained the hearts of those who stood. The hearts of Zhang Lingyun, Fa Ming, Li Haoran, Yue Wushuang, Sun Wukong, Yang Jian, and Nezha. Those hearts were all in that world, and in that world, they were no longer others, but him. It was the heart of Zhang Lingyun when he drew talismans, the heart of Fa Ming when he chanted sutras, the heart of Li Haoran when he read books, the heart of Yue Wushuang when he practiced the sword, the heart of Sun Wukong when he fought monsters, the heart of Yang Jian when he opened his Heavenly Eye, and the heart of Nezha when he stepped on the Wind Fire Wheels. Those hearts were all in his heart, on his Dao, and in his world.
He stood in that world, looking at it. As he looked, he suddenly discovered that the world was not a world, but a heart. It was his heart. It was the heart that finally grew after he had walked so many paths, stood for so long, done so many things, realized so many Daos, overcome so many demons, established the Xuan-shu Path, and crossed the Spirit Severing Lightning Tribulation. That heart was vast, as vast as Chaos. That heart was small, as small as a grain of dust. That heart was bright, as bright as the sun. That heart was dark, as dark as the night. That heart had a name, called Wanxiang Heaven and Earth.
Wanxiang refers to all laws. Heaven and Earth refers to the heart. Wanxiang Heaven and Earth means all laws returning to the heart. All laws returning to the heart means the Heart as the Mysterious Pivot. The Heart as the Mysterious Pivot is his Dao.
He stood there, and as he stood, he suddenly remembered a sentence. It was what Yuanshi Tianzun said when he passed on the Dao of Order to him in Chaos: "You must make them yours. Make them a part of your walk, a part of your stance, and a part of your life. Then, you won't need to remember them, because they will be you."
He understood now. The Dao of the Seven Saints had become his. The pain of the Seven Great Calamities had become his. The light of those who had died had become his. The hearts of those who stood had become his. They had not merely become things on him, but had become a part of his walk, a part of his stance, and a part of his life. He did not need to remember them anymore, because they were him. He was Laozi's One, Tongtian's Severance, the Emptiness and Existence of Jieyin and Zhunti, Nüwa's Creation, Houtu's Reincarnation, and Yuanshi's Order. He was the sacrifice of the Heaven-Opening Great Tribulation, the fear of the Ferocious Beast Great Tribulation, the resentment of the Dragon-Phoenix Great Tribulation, the shattering of the Witch-Demon Calamity, the trauma of the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, the helplessness of the Journey to the West Great Tribulation, and the collapse of the Dharma-Ending Kalpa. He was Tie Niu's light, the light of the Loose Cultivators, the light of the Jie Sect Disciples, the light of the Witch and Yao Races, the light of the Dragon Clan and Phoenix, and the light of the Three Thousand Demon Gods. He was the heart of Zhang Lingyun, the heart of Fa Ming, the heart of Li Haoran, the heart of Yue Wushuang, the heart of Sun Wukong, the heart of Yang Jian, and the heart of Nezha.
He was Wanxiang Heaven and Earth.
He smiled. The smile was light, as light as the wind. But there was something in that wind, a sense of groundedness from finally making everything his own. He took a step and continued forward. As he walked, Wanxiang Heaven and Earth walked with him. It was beneath his feet, in his heart, and in every step he had taken. The things in that world also followed him. The room in Heyin City, the ancient temple on Zhongnan Mountain, the gates of the Three Mountains of Daoism, the ancestral courts of the Three Temples of Buddhism, the academies of the Three Academies of Confucianism, the martial arts arenas of the Three Sects of Martial Arts, the defensive position before The Rift, the prayer mat in Zixiao Palace, every footprint in Chaos, and every duel within the Heart Demon. Those people: Tie Niu, the Loose Cultivators, Zhang Lingyun, Fa Ming, Li Haoran, Yue Wushuang, Sun Wukong, Yang Jian, Nezha, Laozi, Tongtian, Jieyin, Zhunti, Nüwa, Houtu, Yuanshi, Xuanweizi, and Daoist Songyun. Those Daos: Laozi's One, Tongtian's Severance, the Emptiness and Existence of Jieyin and Zhunti, Nüwa's Creation, Houtu's Reincarnation, and Yuanshi's Order. Those pains: Heaven-Opening, Ferocious Beast, Dragon-Phoenix, Witch-Demon, Investiture of the Gods, Journey to the West, and Dharma-Ending. Those lights: Tie Niu's light, the light of the Loose Cultivators, the light of the Jie Sect Disciples, the light of the Witch and Yao Races, the light of the Dragon Clan and Phoenix, and the light of the Three Thousand Demon Gods. Those hearts: the hearts of Zhang Lingyun, Fa Ming, Li Haoran, Yue Wushuang, Sun Wukong, Yang Jian, and Nezha.
All those things were in Wanxiang Heaven and Earth, beneath his feet, in his heart, and in every step he had taken.
As he walked, he suddenly remembered something. He remembered the three words Daoist Songyun had carved on the wall of Zixiao Palace—"Heart is the Pivot." He did not understand then, but he understood now. Heart is the Pivot, the pivot is the heart; heart and pivot are one. But the heart is not just the pivot; the heart is also Wanxiang, the heart is also Heaven and Earth, the heart is also every step he had walked, the heart is also every place he had stood, the heart is also every thing he had done, the heart is also every person he had met, the heart is also every tear he had shed, the heart is also every moment he had laughed, the heart is also every fear he had felt, the heart is also every doubt he had asked, the heart is also every obsession he had forced, the heart is also every "self" he had thought of, the heart is also every calamity he had passed, the heart is also every thunder he had crossed, the heart is also every Dao he had established, and the heart is also every inch of the path he had walked.
The heart is Wanxiang, the heart is Heaven and Earth. Wanxiang Heaven and Earth is the heart.
He stood there, and as he stood, he suddenly felt something and looked up. In the Chaos ahead, there was light. It was not the pale light of Laozi, the green light of Tongtian, the golden light of Jieyin and Zhunti, the colorful light of Nüwa, the yellow light of Houtu, the white light of Yuanshi, or his own heart's light. It was the purple light of Zixiao Palace. He had reached Zixiao Palace. It was not the Zixiao Palace from when he had left, but the Zixiao Palace he had walked back to after walking so many paths, standing for so long, doing so many things, realizing so many Daos, overcoming so many demons, establishing the Xuan-shu Path, crossing the Spirit Severing Lightning Tribulation, and growing Wanxiang Heaven and Earth.
He looked at the purple light and smiled. The smile was light, as light as the wind. But there was something in that wind, a sense of emotion from finally having walked back. He took a step toward the purple light, toward Zixiao Palace, toward the place he should return to.
Inside Zixiao Palace, Hongjun's phantom was still there, but the Seven Saints had already left. Only Hongjun was there waiting for him, waiting for him to walk back. Lu Mingyuan entered Zixiao Palace, walked before Hongjun, and bowed deeply. "Dao Ancestor, your Disciple has returned." Hongjun looked at him, his gaze piercing through time and space, through Karma, through everything. "You're back?" Lu Mingyuan nodded. "I'm back." Hongjun asked, "Finished walking?" Lu Mingyuan thought for a moment. "No. The road is still long." Hongjun asked, "Then why come back?" Lu Mingyuan said, "To take a look. After looking, I will walk again."
Hongjun smiled. The smile was faint, so faint it was as if he had not smiled at all. But there was something in that faintness, a sense of relief from finally waiting for someone to say those words. "Good. After looking, walk again." He looked at Lu Mingyuan. "You established the Xuan-shu Path, crossed the Spirit Severing Lightning Tribulation, and grew Wanxiang Heaven and Earth. Your Dao is complete, your heart is clear, and your world has grown. But the road is still long. There are still many paths to walk, many things to do, many calamities to pass, and many heavens to mend."
Lu Mingyuan nodded. "Disciple knows." Hongjun asked, "Then are you afraid?" Lu Mingyuan thought for a moment. "I am not afraid." Hongjun asked, "Why are you not afraid?" Lu Mingyuan said, "Because as I walk, I come to know. As I walk, I come to understand. As I walk, I arrive. Not being afraid does not mean not feeling fear. It means even while afraid, I walk."
Hongjun looked at him for a very long time. Then, he spoke. "Go. Return to the Mortal world. Your Dao is in the Mortal world, not in Zixiao Palace. Your world is in the Mortal world, not in Chaos. Your path is in the Mortal world, not with the Saints."
Lu Mingyuan bowed deeply. "Thank you, Dao Ancestor." Then he turned and walked out of Zixiao Palace. When he reached the palace gates, he suddenly stopped, without looking back. "Dao Ancestor, your Disciple has one more thing to say." Hongjun asked, "What is it?" Lu Mingyuan said, "Wanxiang Heaven and Earth is not in Zixiao Palace. It is in the Mortal world. It is not with the Saints. It is with the Mortals. It is not in the orthodoxies. It is beneath the feet of those who walk, on the bodies of those who stand, in the hearts of those who live, and in the light of those who have died." He paused. "Disciple is leaving. Returning to the Mortal world. To walk."
Then, he took a step. Out of Zixiao Palace, into Chaos, and toward the Mortal world.
Inside Zixiao Palace, Hongjun watched his departing figure. As he watched, he smiled. "Wanxiang Heaven and Earth is not in Zixiao Palace. It is in the Mortal world. He is right. The Dao is not in Zixiao Palace, it is in the Mortal world. It is not with the Saints, it is with the Mortals. It is not in the orthodoxies, it is beneath the feet of those who walk." His phantom began to fade, becoming fainter and fainter. Finally, he smiled. "Go. I should go as well. Back to the depths of Chaos, back to the depths of the Heavenly Dao, back to the place I should return to." Then, he disappeared. Zixiao Palace was empty. Only the words on that wall still glowed. Daoist Songyun's 'Heart is the Pivot,' and Lu Mingyuan's 'After the Heart as the Mysterious Pivot, it is still the heart. Good.' The words of two generations, separated by nine hundred years, glowed on the same wall. They glowed like the heart, like the pivot, like the Dao, and like those who walk.
Within Chaos, Lu Mingyuan walked. Toward the Mortal world, toward The Rift, toward those who stood, toward those who walked, toward those living beings, and toward those who had died. Wanxiang Heaven and Earth was in his heart, beneath his feet, and in every step he had taken. Everything of his was in that world: his path, his standing, his doing. His fear, his doubt, his obsession, his 'self.' His passing, his walking, his arriving. His birth, his death, his living. His tears, his laughter, his pain. His love, his hate, his fear. His rights, his wrongs, his regrets. His inability to let go, his reluctance to part, his necessity to walk. His willingness to walk, his walking, his arrival. The Dao of the Seven Saints, the pain of the Seven Great Calamities, the light of those who had died, and the hearts of those who stood. All those things were in that world, each returning to its place and each serving its purpose. Not messy, not crowded, just right.
He walked. Step by step, not fast, not slow, just walking.
As he walked, he suddenly remembered a sentence. It was what Master Xuanweizi had said. "Cultivation is walking. Walk the path beneath your feet well, and you will naturally know how to walk thereafter." He understood now. He had walked so many paths, stood for so long, done so many things, realized so many Daos, overcome so many demons, established the Xuan-shu Path, crossed the Spirit Severing Lightning Tribulation, and grown Wanxiang Heaven and Earth. But the road was still there, and he still had to walk. Because walking is the Dao. Standing is not the Dao, completion is not the Dao, walking is the Dao. He smiled; the smile was light, as light as the wind. But there was something in that wind, a sense of groundedness from finally knowing the road was still long, and a sense of clarity from finally knowing how to walk.
He walked. Step by step, toward the Mortal world, toward The Rift, toward the place he should go.
