111: Chapter 111 A Woman's Intuition Is Terrifying
Li Jianguo bought Fishing gear for Zhao Yang with a dark expression, found a van, filled it with gas, and then rushed back to the bureau.
The more he thought about it, the more stifled he felt. As a dignified captain of the Criminal Police Team, he was actually running errands to buy Fishing gear for someone else; when had he ever suffered such humiliation?
His phone rang. He looked at the number—General Manager Sun from Kahn Paper Industry.
Li Jianguo quickly answered, "Hello, General Manager Sun."
"I heard that an inspection team from the Imperial Capital arrived at your bureau? Who are they?"
"General Manager Sun, you truly have a Divine Ability to know so quickly," Li Jianguo laughed. "They are from the Third Institute of the Ministry of Public Security. The leader is named Zhao Yang. He has a high rank; he is already a deputy division-level official at such a young age."
There was a two-second silence on the other end of the line. "What have they investigated?"
"They looked at the case files. They said they were taking the data from the criminal case files of the past two years back for research purposes. They mentioned things like training models and calibration—I don't quite understand it, but it sounds like they are tech-oriented."
"Wait—you said the leader is named Zhao Yang?" General Manager Sun's voice suddenly sank. "What does he look like? How old is he?"
"He looks about twenty-three or twenty-four, and he is quite handsome. By the way, he also brought three young women—two are subordinates, and one is a friend. They are all quite pretty. I don't think this kid is anything good; I reckon..."
"Hold on!" Sun Chuanfu's sinister voice suddenly came from the other side of the phone. "Captain Li! And you call yourself a member of the public security System! No wonder you've been marking time for so many years without getting promoted! Do you really not know who this Zhao Yang is?"
Li Jianguo was stunned. "General Manager Sun, could it be you know him? I didn't expect your connections to reach the Imperial Capital."
"I really don't know what to say to you! This Zhao Yang is a first-class merit recipient for organized crime suppression, officially commended by the Ministry of Public Security nationwide! What on earth are you thinking about all day? To think you don't even know this!"
Li Jianguo's body jolted. "How is that possible? Is it the same name? Isn't that Zhao Yang from Jinghai?"
"He was transferred to the Imperial Capital long ago! Don't you read the news? A twenty-three-year-old deputy division-level official! The director of the Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Investigation at the Third Institute of the Ministry of Public Security! He has real capabilities! And you still treat him like some pampered rich kid?"
Cold sweat broke out on Li Jianguo's forehead. "General Manager Sun, do you mean... he has other motives? He... he seemed to notice the Hou Guiping case today."
"What? What did he say? Why would he notice that case? Tell me in detail."
Li Jianguo organized his thoughts and recounted what happened in the archive room, including Zhao Yang's plan to go Fishing.
There was a long silence on the other end before a voice finally came through: "Miaogao Township is indeed a good place for Fishing. But we cannot let our guard down."
"Then should I send someone to keep an eye on him?"
"You don't need to worry about it; I'll have Xiao Hu arrange it. By the way, are there any loopholes in the Hou Guiping case file?"
"None. The testimonial and physical evidence form a closed loop, and the autopsy report is also flawless." Li Jianguo pondered for a moment. "As long as no one tells him, he absolutely won't be able to spot any problems."
"Don't let your guard down. This Zhao Yang even brought down the mayor of Jinghai! If he really finds something, we'll be in big trouble!"
"Then what should we do?" Li Jianguo was also getting nervous. He recalled the reports he had read, and the more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt.
"Don't panic. Tomorrow, I'll have someone test him. If he really discovers anything—let him die the same way Hou Guiping did. It's perfectly normal to have an accident while Fishing!"
"Alright. Then tomorrow, I'll have someone keep a close eye on those two female colleagues."
"Don't be too nervous, lest you arouse suspicion."
"Understood."
The call ended. Li Jianguo put his phone into his pocket, turned his head to look at the Fishing gear in the car, and felt an indescribable sense of unease.
The three of them, led by Zhao Yang, returned to the guesthouse without waiting for Li Jianguo to come back. He washed his face and then hurried to the train station. Bai Xiaohe had already arrived and was standing on the platform, watching from afar as a green-skinned train slowly came to a halt.
Zhao Yang walked up to her side. "What do you plan to do in a moment? Are you really going to follow him?"
Bai Xiaohe remained silent, her gaze fixed on a young woman with a ponytail on the platform, her expression somewhat complicated.
Zhao Yang followed her gaze. "Do you know that young woman?"
Bai Xiaohe pursed her lips. "I don't know her. But I have a premonition that she and I are waiting for the same person."
Zhao Yang laughed. "You're overthinking it; how could there be such a coincidence?"
Not long after, the train pulled into the station. The doors opened, and a young man wearing glasses and carrying a backpack walked out. He was wearing a faded dark blue jacket, had a thin build, and his face bore the fatigue of a long-distance journey.
Zhao Yang watched helplessly as the ponytail-wearing young woman walked up to him with a smile on her face.
"Holy shit."
He couldn't help but glance at Bai Xiaohe—a woman's intuition is truly fucking terrifying.
Over there, the two met and exchanged a few words. The young woman had a smile on her face, while the young man's expression was somewhat complicated. They didn't look like lovers reunited after a long time; it was more like the kind of interaction between two people who were too familiar with each other, requiring no prelude.
Bai Xiaohe stared at them, her fingers slowly clenching tight.
"If you want to ask, go up and ask." Zhao Yang's voice was very low. "If you don't ask now, you might never see him again."
Bai Xiaohe nodded, took a deep breath, and stepped forward. Her pace was quick, like a soldier charging into the battlefield, her beige trench coat flapping in the wind. Zhao Yang stood still, watching her walk up to the two of them.
The young man looked up and saw Bai Xiaohe, freezing in place. The ponytail-wearing young woman was also stunned, looking from Bai Xiaohe to the young man, her face full of confusion.
Bai Xiaohe said the first sentence; her voice was not loud, and her expression was calm. Zhao Yang was too far away to hear the content, only seeing her lips moving, her speaking speed not fast, every sentence spoken with determination.
The young man's head lowered more and more.
The young woman's expression shifted from confusion to complexity, her lips pressed into a thin line.
Bai Xiaohe said something else, then reached out her hand toward the young woman. The young woman hesitated for a few seconds before reaching out to shake her hand.
Bai Xiaohe turned and walked back. Her steps were slower than when she went, but her shoulders were held straighter. Walking up to Zhao Yang, she stopped, took a deep breath, and then slowly exhaled.
"I've finished speaking."
Zhao Yang smiled faintly. "I thought you would go up and give him a big slap right away."
The corners of Bai Xiaohe's mouth lifted slightly, then quickly turned silent again. "What's the use of hitting him? That girl is his neighbor, a childhood sweetheart, but there was never any spark. She's been waiting here for him to come back; it's been like this for these past few years."
"I'm a bit curious, what did you say to her?"
Bai Xiaohe was silent for a moment, then gave a calm smile. "Nothing much. I told her, 'Your neighbor, he has great ambitions, but he has let down a young woman named Bai Xiaohe.'"
Zhao Yang gave a thumbs up. "Congratulations, you've said goodbye to the past."
Bai Xiaohe's eyes turned red. "He said 'I'm sorry' to me. I wanted to say 'I won't forgive you,' but I still said 'It's okay.'" As she spoke, her fingers clenched again, and her shoulders trembled slightly.
Zhao Yang patted his right shoulder. "If you want to cry, cry; you can use my shoulder."
