123: Chapter 123 Contents of the Doctoral Dissertation
After Professor Lin finished speaking, he flipped through a few more pages of the dissertation, his brow furrowing even tighter. "It's not just that it will be hard to find a place for the defense; how do you plan to implement some of these things? How will you conduct the experiments? Although our Shuimu University has some influence, we can't even reach the threshold for your dissertation's experiments."
Zhao Yang smiled. "Don't worry about that. I'll ask the Third Institute for help in contacting the military."
"The police... the military..." Professor Lin pointed at Zhao Yang, a sudden realization dawning on him. "This thing of yours was intended for military use from the start, wasn't it?"
"Don't say that. Half of the contents are for civilian use—industry terminals, embedded Systems, portable computers, and the like."
Professor Lin flipped open the dissertation again, pointing to a section and asking, "Do you mean to say that you want to make this Microkernel Operating System into something like Windows?"
"It's more or less an operating System for everyone. Developers will create software on it to enrich the entire ecosystem," Zhao Yang explained with a smile. "I'll release the development tools at the same time, along with some software and demos I've developed myself. However, this System and Windows are on two different tracks; one is for personal computers, and the other is for mobile terminals. Of course, it can be adapted for computers too, for use in certain specialized areas."
"Wait a minute." Professor Lin frowned. "This is no small amount of work. When did you start working on this?"
Zhao Yang gave an embarrassed smile and made up a lie on the spot. "Probably right after I graduated from junior high school."
"After junior high?" Professor Lin's expression became complicated, filled with shock and a hint of resentment.
As expected, the world of a Genius was like the world of a madman; an ordinary person like him simply couldn't understand it.
Director Gao Wenbo waved his hand helplessly. "Alright, say no more! I can guarantee that Shuimu's support for your operating System will be no less than our support for the Go Language community."
"That's fantastic!" Zhao Yang beamed.
Shuimu's support for the Go Language community was unprecedented. Not only had they partnered with over a dozen prestigious universities, but they had also added Go Language to the formal Computer Science curriculum. Even the graduate entrance exams for the Department of Computer Science had made Go Language a mandatory subject.
The Microkernel Operating System he had produced was essentially the complete form of the Grandmist operating System from the future. In addition to the core code, it included a full development environment—everything from software development to debugging and publishing; a complete set of tools was provided. Of course, Zhao Yang had removed some of the more advanced elements to suit the current era.
Regardless, in 2001 and 2002, introducing an independently controllable operating System with a full development suite would definitely cause an earthquake in the nation's Information Section Domain.
Zhao Yang continued, "Professor Lin, my dissertation is a Systems engineering project. I hope Shuimu can take the lead, in collaboration with the Third Institute, to form a Grandmist project community specifically to refine this project."
Professor Lin pondered for a moment before nodding. "Alright, I support you."
The two chatted for a while longer before Zhao Yang took his leave.
Afterward, Zhao Yang became very busy.
There was the preparation for the project team and the customization of related equipment. His dissertation required physical prototypes. The so-called Police Terminals were actually smartphones with relatively simple configurations. Zhao Yang provided the design blueprints to Hongdou Technology, which directly manufactured five hundred terminals plus ten Control Base Stations. As for the cost, no one even considered it; Gao Qisheng signed off on it with a flourish, donating the batch to the Department of Computer Science as support for Shuimu's research work.
By the end of the year, Zhao Yang returned to Jinghai with two hundred terminals and four Control Base Stations. He sought out An Changlin to help distribute them to the grassroots level for trial use.
For three whole months, Zhao Yang did not leave Jinghai, dedicating himself to debugging and improving the equipment. He even spent the Spring Festival with the frontline officers.
It was somewhat frustrating; many of the improvements felt like negative optimizations to Zhao Yang. This was because the communication infrastructure of this era couldn't compare to twenty years later. Many ideas were great in theory, but due to objective limitations, they had to make do with simpler solutions.
Even so, this batch of terminals received immense praise from the grassroots. Especially during arrest operations, everyone could use the terminals for multi-party communication and position reporting at any time. Current situations could be reported instantly, and intelligence support from higher departments was always available. In Li Xiang's words, using this thing was like having the Heavenly Eye; as long as they were within signal coverage, it felt like everything was under control.
Before the trial period even ended, An Changlin sent a report to the Ministry of Public Security, requesting that Jinghai be used as a pilot site to fully promote Zhao Yang's Police Terminal System.
The Ministry was baffled when they first saw the report—Zhao Yang had taken the route of a research collaboration between Shuimu and the local Jinghai police. Not to mention the Ministry of Public Security, even the Third Institute didn't know much about it.
When the leadership looked into it, they realized—good grief, it was Zhao Yang again! This kid had been quiet for months, and it turned out he was brewing something this big.
As a result, before Zhao Yang's originally planned four-month frontline trial could conclude, he was called back by a phone call from Director Gao Wenbo.
Facing Director Gao Wenbo's questioning, Zhao Yang shrugged. "Director Gao, that's my doctoral dissertation project. I had to produce some results before reporting to the higher-ups, don't you think? Besides, it's understandable that Uncle An couldn't sit still; he's a frontline director and a bit impatient. But surely our Third Institute doesn't need to be in such a rush?"
Director Gao Wenbo pointed at Zhao Yang. "You have the nerve to say that? Let me ask you: what did An Changlin's report mean when it said the Control Base Stations could seamlessly infiltrate criminal communication devices? What did it mean by being able to block all unauthorized electronic System communications? And that terminal of yours—using GPS signals, the positioning accuracy can reach within one meter! I believe An Changlin wouldn't dare talk nonsense, but do you know what this implies?"
Zhao Yang shrugged. "It's nothing much. I just used four control stations to create an Augmented Positioning System and used America's GPS signal for assistance. Oh, and I also used the Cellular Positioning principle for mobile phones; it's very simple. You don't think I cracked America's military GPS signal, do you?"
"Didn't you?" Director Gao Wenbo asked.
Zhao Yang looked innocent. "There was really no need to do that."
Director Gao Wenbo breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good. If you really did that, you could forget about ever publishing this dissertation."
Zhao Yang rolled his eyes and said slowly, "Actually, I did do that at first, but later I felt it didn't have much technical merit. It wasn't because my equipment was powerful, but because America's satellites were powerful. So I switched to this ground-based augmentation method, which is like turning dross into magic."
"You... you really cracked it?" Director Gao Wenbo's lips began to tremble. "Have you told anyone else? Did you leave any records behind?"
"Don't get so excited," Zhao Yang laughed. "That stuff is easy to crack once you master the method. How about I teach you?"
"Don't say it, and I'm not listening! You wait here, don't leave!" After Director Gao Wenbo finished, he lowered his head in deep thought, then pulled out a small notebook from his pocket and searched through it. Then, he picked up the red secure telephone.
