113: Wanbao Gilded Pagoda
“That’s indeed interesting!” The Old Man immediately smiled happily, seeing that he had won.
Wei Xun looked at the black pieces on the board with some surprise.
This Old Man had only just learned how to play Gobang, yet he managed to defeat him in the second game.
It seemed he had completely grasped the rules of Gobang.
“Well, Old Man, since I’ve played chess with you!” Wei Xun saw that the Old Man was in a good mood, so he immediately said, “Why don’t you tell me about this tower and how you ended up being trapped inside?”
Upon hearing this, the Old Man slowly let out a long sigh.
“This tower is not actually called the Purple Gold Glazed Pagoda, but rather the Myriad Treasures Gilded Pagoda!”
Hearing the name of the tower, Wei Xun knew it was not simple.
“It’s also considered a storage Magic Treasure!” the Old Man slowly explained.
Wei Xun was somewhat surprised to hear the words “storage Magic Treasure.”
However, he then felt confused, because he had previously tried to use the methods for activating a storage Magic Treasure to use this tower.
But there had been no reaction.
“Unlike ordinary storage Magic Treasures!” the Old Man continued, “This tower, oh, it can also store Souls!”
“Oh?” Wei Xun was a little surprised to hear this.
“I am now merely a Soul!” The Old Man shook his head helplessly as he said this, “I can only be forever trapped in this tower, unable to leave even half a step.”
“Why can’t you leave?” Wei Xun asked curiously.
“On one hand, it’s because my physical body has long since turned to dust, and this tower is equivalent to a Seal on me; as soon as I step out of this tower, I will vanish into thin air.”
Hearing the Old Man’s words, Wei Xun sensed the unusual nature of this tower.
“Why is this tower called the Myriad Treasures Gilded Pagoda?” Wei Xun then asked.
“As the name suggests, the tower contains many treasures!” the Old Man slowly explained.
Wei Xun immediately turned his head to look around; the room on this floor was empty, with only some simple tables, chairs, and benches, not at all looking like it contained treasures.
“However…” the Old Man continued, “The treasures in this tower were already taken out one by one by the person who obtained this tower before; there aren’t many good things left!”
“The person before?”
“Yes!” The Old Man nodded, “If I remember correctly, the last person to enter this tower was more than six hundred years ago.”
Hearing this, Wei Xun felt a bit disappointed.
Apparently, this tower had long been emptied, and all he had received were the scraps left behind.
“What good things are left? Can you show them to me?” Although somewhat disappointed, Wei Xun was still curious about the remaining treasures.
“Although there aren’t many good things left in our Myriad Treasures Glazed Pagoda!” the Old Man said, “If you want to obtain treasures, you still have to follow the rules inside our tower!”
“What rules?” Wei Xun asked.
“This tower of ours has a total of seven floors!” The Old Man pointed upwards and said, “Each floor has an old fellow like me, and the rules on each floor are different!”
“Not only are the rules different, but the types of treasures on each floor are also different!”
“To get a treasure, you must win against me!”
Wei Xun nodded thoughtfully after hearing this, then looked at the Old Man and said, “Then, Old Man, what are the rules on your floor?”
“The rules on my floor are very simple: just win against me in a game of chess!” The Old Man smiled.
Wei Xun immediately felt a headache; this Old Man was clearly a master at chess.
After just hearing the rules of Gobang today, he could already defeat him, a runner-up in a primary school competition.
“Then give me the treasure!” But after a moment of thought, Wei Xun directly extended his hand and demanded it from the Old Man.
The Old Man frowned immediately, “Didn’t I say? I can only give it to you if you win against me in chess!”
“I remember I just won a game against you!” Wei Xun immediately emphasized.
“I was talking about Go!” the Old Man also emphasized.
“You didn’t make that clear!” Wei Xun played dirty, “You just said that if I could win against you in chess, that would be enough. I did just win a game against you, so according to the rules, you should give me the treasure!”
“But you didn’t ask me for the treasure just now!” The Old Man rolled his eyes at Wei Xun.
“Well, you didn’t say there was a treasure just now either!” Wei Xun was unrelenting.
Seeing how unreasonable Wei Xun was, the Old Man could only point to the chessboard and say, “How about this: let’s play a game now, whether it’s Go or your Gobang, as long as you can win against me, I’ll give you the treasure!”
“I just won a game, so give me one first!” Wei Xun felt that he couldn’t win against this Old Man, so he simply decided not to play.
“How can that be!” The Old Man immediately refused upon hearing this.
“I see your room is so empty, it doesn’t look like there are any treasures!” Wei Xun pouted and shook his head, “I think you don’t have any treasures at all, that’s why you’re not giving them to me!”
“Who says I don’t have treasures?” The Old Man immediately became displeased upon hearing this, “I still have a few fun items here that I haven’t given out yet!”
“Let me see!” Wei Xun immediately became interested.
“Follow the rules!” The Old Man pointed to the chessboard and said, “Win against me in chess, and I’ll give you the treasure!”
“Alright, let’s go!” Seeing that the Old Man was not easy to fool, Wei Xun had no choice but to agree.
“So, do you want to play Go? Or your Gobang?”
The Old Man gathered the pieces on the board back into his chess box and slowly asked Wei Xun across from him.
“Gobang, of course!”
Wei Xun also gathered the white pieces back into his own box.
“Alright!”
The Old Man nodded, then placed a black piece.
Three minutes later, Wei Xun looked at the four connected black pieces the Old Man had formed on the board and immediately felt a sense of despair.
He simply couldn’t block this Old Man.
“You lost!”
The Old Man had a mischievous smile.
“I’m not convinced, let’s play another round!”
Two minutes later, Wei Xun lost again.
He then played five or six more consecutive games, and Wei Xun was unexpectedly defeated by the Old Man in all of them.
“Your chess is really terrible!” After winning another game, the Old Man shook his head helplessly.
Seeing this, Wei Xun could only say, “Old Man, since I’m so bad, would you dare to give me a handicap?”
“What do you mean?” the Old Man asked.
“You let me play white first, and let me place two pieces first!” Wei Xun challenged, “If I still lose even with a handicap, I will definitely study Go diligently and come in every day to play chess with you, asking for nothing in return!”
The Old Man immediately chuckled upon hearing this, “Is that true?”
“It’s true!” Wei Xun nodded.
Then the Old Man let Wei Xun place two pieces first, and then he would play.
But as the game progressed, the Old Man realized something was wrong.
In the rules of Go, let alone giving a one-move handicap, even if he gave Wei Xun five moves, he was confident he could completely crush him to victory.
But in Gobang, a one-move handicap made such a huge difference.
Soon, Wei Xun, relying on the advantage of his pieces, diagonally connected five white pieces.
“Old Man, I won!”
