105: The Beginning of the Boundary
The partial adjustment authority of the "Possibility Delay Protocol," like a key imbued with the weight of stars, was heavily placed into the hands of the Watchers. It brought not the pleasure of control, but a suffocating sense of responsibility. They needed to define dynamic boundaries for the universe's "creativity" and "stability," which was akin to re-planning the course of a galaxy that had flowed for billions of years.
Within the Watchman Nexus, a new mode of operation was quickly established. The computational core led by Einstein fully dedicated itself to constructing a "Possibility-Stability Dynamic Equilibrium Model." This model needed to integrate the cosmic rule database, real-time monitoring of "Star Language" Network activity, the "Tide of Delusion" order reports, and the evolutionary data of all known civilizations (from primitive life to interstellar empires). Its complexity far exceeded any previous project.
"The key difficulty lies in quantifying 'Possibility,'" the doctor's image appeared exceptionally sharp amidst the complex data streams, "We cannot measure a civilization's sudden technological breakthrough, or an unexpected evolutionary branch of a rule-based life form, with a simple numerical value. These events often stem from extremely low-probability coincidences and illogical inspirations, and their long-term impact is even harder to predict."
Lin Mo and Ling Shuang became the most important "living calibrators" for this model. With his Blueprint authority, Lin Mo could intuitively "feel" the changes in the "tension" of the universe's overall rule background under different rule parameter adjustments—whether it was tending towards rigidity or becoming overly active and on the verge of losing control. Ling Shuang's psionic ability, on the other hand, could capture the vague but crucial collective emotional fluctuations of "hope," "fear," and "resilience" at the "life" level that could not be reflected in the model. These often served as precursors to the eruption of "Possibility."
Their first major test came sooner than expected.
An emergency alert came from a galaxy designated G-817, located at the edge of the Star Language Territory. A medium-level civilization within this galaxy, which had just entered the industrial age, suffered a catastrophic accident during an experiment to explore a new type of energy based on quantum tunneling. It wasn't a normal explosion; their experimental equipment accidentally tore open a microscopic rule rift, and a highly contagious "rule rust" was seeping out of the rift at the speed of light!
This "rust" does not destroy matter, but "freezes" the activity of rules. In the areas it affects, physical laws gradually become rigid and inflexible, eventually tending towards the cold, absolute order of the Silent Frontier. For life and the "Star Language" Network, which depend on rule activity to exist, this is a deadly plague!
The tide of delusion's response was swift and ruthless. Its evaluation model showed that the most "efficient" solution was to immediately implement "preventive isolation" for the G-817 galaxy and its surrounding area within several light-years, even initiating localized formatting if necessary, to prevent the "rust" from spreading.
"No!" Ling Shuang objected immediately. Her psionic ability sensed the instantaneous explosion of fear and will to survive, as brilliant as a supernova, from the billions of life forms in that trapped civilization. "That's complete destruction! Moreover, we still don't understand the essence of the 'rust.' Blind isolation might not eradicate it; instead, it could cause it to mutate in a confined environment!"
Lin Mo immediately invoked the new authority of the "Possibility Delay Protocol" to examine the rule structure of the G-817 galaxy. The spread of the "rust" was extremely fast, but not impregnable. He found that this "rust" had stronger resistance to highly complex rule structures full of inherent randomness. And the civilization that caused the accident, its social structure, technology tree, and even cultural trends, were in an extremely active and uncertain explosive period.
"This is a typical case where 'Possibility' and 'risk' coexist," Lin Mo quickly analyzed, "If we follow the tide of delusion's plan, the risk is stifled, but all the 'Possibility' contained within that civilization will also be annihilated. If we try to intervene..."
"The risk of intervention is that the 'rust' might spread before we can control it, causing greater losses," Einstein calmly added.
"But the reward for success is saving a civilization and gaining valuable experience in combating this new type of rule threat," Wu Yong stared at the light point on the star map, slowly being eroded by gray (representing rust), his voice firm, "Isn't our duty to find opportunities amidst risks?"
Time waited for no one. The edge of the "rust" had already begun to contact the "star language" nodes on the periphery of the galaxy, and the rule activity of the nodes was visibly decreasing.
"Execute the intervention plan," Lin Mo made the decision, his voice brooking no argument, "Doctor, immediately simulate a model of the interaction between 'rust' and a highly complex rule environment. Ling Shuang, guide the 'star language' network to transmit high-intensity rule information streams, imbued with 'creativity' and 'adaptability,' to the G-817 galaxy, attempting to enhance the rule 'immunity' of that area. Wu Yong, prepare a special task force, carrying 'Rule Activators' developed based on the principles of the Hymn of Abundance, to seal the source of the rift! Xiao Li, closely monitor the spread of the 'rust,' and be ready to activate emergency spatial isolation at any time, but the scope must be kept to a minimum!"
The orders were executed swiftly.
A battle of "rescue" and "epidemic prevention" at the rule level began.
Ling Shuang pushed her psionic ability to its limit, guiding the hopes and blessings from countless "star language" nodes, transforming them into an invisible rule tide that washed over the G-817 galaxy. In the areas invaded by the "rust," the rule structure, under the impact of the tide, seemed to be infused with vitality, and the process of solidification significantly slowed down.
The special task force commanded by Wu Yong, piloting specially reinforced "ark" class warships, bravely broke into the interior of the galaxy. They avoided the main spread path of the "rust," as if navigating through a gray sea of plague, and finally reached the microscopic rift that was still continuously seeping gray mist. The special task force members manipulated robotic arms, precisely injecting the "Rule Activator," which condensed Einstein's latest algorithms, into the rift.
The process was thrilling. The rift trembled violently, releasing a more intense "rust" shockwave, which at one point made the rule shields of the special task force's warships precarious. But eventually, the "Activator" worked. The rift began to contract, and the "rust" seeping from it was curbed and purified at its source.
At the same time, the civilization that caused the accident witnessed a "miracle" in despair—the gray tide of death inexplicably receded, and their world was preserved. They did not know exactly what happened, but in the collective consciousness of the entire civilization, gratitude for the unknown assistance was imprinted, along with an even stronger desire for exploration and cohesion that erupted after struggling for survival on the brink of destruction. Their "Possibility," far from being stifled, was tempered and sublimated by this catastrophe.
The rescue was successful. The cost was a huge expenditure of energy, and several special task force members required long-term recuperation due to rule impact.
At the post-battle assessment meeting, Einstein presented the data: "In this incident, the ratio of the 'Possibility' variable (the potential improvement of the G-817 civilization, and our gained experience in combating 'rule rust') to the 'risk cost' (resource consumption, casualties, potential spread risk), calculated by the model, is within the acceptable 'green zone.' Our intervention... was worthwhile."
Lin Mo slowly nodded, but his gaze remained solemn. "We succeeded this time, but the model still needs optimization. We need to predict the eruption points and potential values of 'Possibility' more accurately, and we also need more effective means to manage risks." He looked at the G-817 galaxy, which had just regained vitality, "More importantly, we realized that the 'boundary' is not a fixed line, but a dynamic 'spectrum' that needs to be continuously evaluated and adjusted."
Ling Shuang softly added, her psionic ability still able to sense the distant civilization's throbbing: "And this spectrum ultimately needs to be explored and defined by 'life' itself in its growth. What we can do is not to delineate forbidden zones, but to... guard their exploration process, and, when necessary, become the final barrier to prevent exploration from evolving into destruction."
The first true "boundary" test made them understand the weight of their responsibilities more deeply. They were not only observers and regulators, but also guardians of Possibility itself, maintainers of that subtle and precious balance point between the two extremes of "order" and "chaos" in the universe.
And in the depths of that endless rule backend, the geometric projection of the Architect still silently hovered, recording all of this. Perhaps, for them, how the Watchers utilized this newly acquired authority was, in itself, the most noteworthy data point in that grand experiment concerning "Possibility."
