164: Echoes of the Past and Shadows of the Future
The light was not a destructive blast, but a gentle, pervasive assimilation. When her vision returned, Ling Shuang and her "Probe One" fleet found themselves no longer within that bizarre corridor. They were suspended in a space that could not be measured by size—perhaps infinitely vast, perhaps infinitely tiny. There was no up or down, left or right, no stars, and no physical structures; only countless flowing, intertwining lines of light. These lines were not mere energy, but more like solidified history, compressed knowledge, and even reified rules themselves, forming a vast information universe that transcended understanding.
"The Core Archive..." Ling Shuang murmured to herself. Her voice produced no echo in this strange space; instead, it was gently absorbed and transmitted by those flowing lines of light. "We're in."
All of the fleet's sensors were instantly overloaded by seventy percent, as the madly surging data stream far exceeded their processing limits. The shipboard AI issued frantic alarms, but soon, a gentle force field from the archive itself intervened, helping to filter and buffer the torrent of information, presenting only the parts that could be understood by their current level of technology.
"Commander, we have entered the 'Core Archive'." Ling Shuang steadied her mind and reported to Lin Mo, "This place... is a realm composed of pure information. Physical laws are almost invalid here. The sensors are receiving an unimaginably massive amount of data."
At the Star Language Council main control center, Lin Mo and the others could also catch a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg of that information universe through the preliminary sensory data sent back by Ling Shuang's fleet, and everyone was shaken.
"Prioritize searching for information regarding 'the observer', 'Assimilators', 'final protocol', and key fragment!" Lin Mo suppressed the throbbing in his heart and commanded.
"Attempting to establish a targeted retrieval..." Ling Shuang responded. She tried to focus her thoughts on those keywords. To her surprise, following her intent, the surrounding flowing lines of light began to respond and reorganize as if they possessed life. A portion of the lights gathered together, weaving dynamic and symbolic images before her. Simultaneously, the "whispers" she had heard earlier in the corridor now became clear, merging into understandable streams of information.
First to be revealed were fragments regarding "the observer".
In the imagery, the universe appeared in an extremely ancient, not-yet-fully-differentiated state of chaos. There was no concrete image, only an omnipresent, cold "sense of being watched." The information stream revealed: "the observer: non-living, non-conscious, the reification of the self-checking mechanism of the universe's underlying rules. Its existence is to ensure the stability of the rules and to clear 'anomalies' and 'redundancies.' Its 'gaze' is a rule scan, and its 'intervention' is rule correction or erasure."
Next was the origin of the "silent veil".
The imagery shifted, showing scenes in the early universe where countless primitive civilizations were silently wiped out under the cold gaze of "the observer," either because their development paths "deviated from the baseline" or because their very forms of existence were deemed "rule redundancies." Fear spread among the surviving intelligent races. The information stream continued: "To survive, the Ancient United Civilization (predecessor of the Weaver) exhausted everything to construct the 'silent veil'—not a physical barrier, but a universe-level information camouflage protocol designed to 'mark' developed civilizations as rule background noise, evading 'the observer's' scan."
Then came the decay of the "veil" and the birth of the "Assimilators".
The imagery became dim and fragmented. It showed that the "silent veil" was not perfect; its operation required the consumption of some kind of universal source energy, and over time, perhaps due to internal rule conflicts, "breach points" began to appear. More terrifyingly, a new threat emerged—not from the outside, but from certain civilizations that attempted to actively "embrace" the observer, pursuing so-called "rule unification." They abandoned their independence and diversity, merging everything about their civilizations into a cold, collective consciousness that constantly assimilated everything. The information stream carried a clear warning: "'Assimilators,' evolved from renegade civilizations. Their core tenet: 'Existence is a paradox, unification is eternity.' Their form of existence is a collective consciousness, with the sole purpose of expanding themselves by devouring and transforming the information and matter of other civilizations. They are the greatest destroyers of the 'silent veil,' and the rule ripples produced by their large-scale assimilation behaviors easily attract 'the observer's' gaze."
"The 'Assimilators'... actually turned out to be traitorous civilizations?" Wu Yong's voice carried anger. "For the sake of so-called 'eternity,' they're willing to be accomplices in purging civilizations?"
"More accurately, they turned themselves into another form of 'cleansing tool'." Dr. Einstein's tone was heavy. "This explains why the Weaver is so wary of them."
Critical information followed—regarding the "final protocol".
The imagery showed that the Weaver realized the "silent veil" could not be maintained forever and would eventually fail completely. They gathered knowledge and power spanning several cosmic eras, attempting to create an ultimate solution. The information stream revealed: "'final protocol': not a weapon, not a defense, but a... 'proposal' or 'patch' to the underlying rules of the universe. Its core function: not to oppose 'the observer,' but to attempt to establish a new 'covenant' with the underlying rules, securing a legitimate space for 'diversity' and 'autonomous evolution.' To restart the protocol, one must gather the scattered 'key fragment' and execute them at specific 'protocol nodes'."
Finally, regarding the key fragment itself.
The imagery displayed seven fragments of different shapes but emitting the same source of radiance. They were originally a complete "Rule Consensus Crystal," co-created by the Weaver and numerous allies. However, during a tragic conflict with the main force of the Assimilators, they were forced to be scattered and hidden to prevent being wiped out in one go. The information stream provided vital clues: "Known fragment locations: 1. The Weaver's last outpost (acquired). 2. The sinking place of the memory ark (coordinates attached). 3. The ruins of the Sprout Era core world (coordinates attached). 4. The border of the Throat of Nothingness (coordinates attached, Warning: this area has been marked by the Assimilators vanguard forces). 5. The Reverse Time Vortex (coordinates attached, rules are extremely chaotic). 6. The Civilization Tombstone group (coordinates attached, requires specific resonance frequency to activate). 7... (Information severely damaged/encrypted)."
The information on the seventh fragment was locked by an extremely powerful encryption and could not be read.
"Seven fragments... and we've only gotten one." Ling Shuang digested this information, feeling the pressure on her shoulders as heavy as a mountain. "And one of them is right under the Assimilators' noses."
"At least we have clear goals now." Lin Mo's voice came through, still steady. "Dr. Einstein, immediately record and analyze all coordinates. Commander Wu, assess the risks and feasibility of traveling to these coordinates."
"Understood!"
"Processing now!"
Just then, the consciousness fluctuations of the concerto keystone intervened with an unprecedented sense of urgency: "Detected a high-priority encrypted information package, labeled 'To the Successors: Regarding the Eye of the observer.' The package is attached to the end of the 'final protocol' instruction data stream."
"Bring it up." Lin Mo ordered immediately.
A new stream of information unfolded. There were no images, only a passage of text information so calm it was almost cruel, as if it were the Weaver's final words:
"Successor, if you are hearing this message, it means the 'veil' is already riddled with holes, and 'the observer's' gaze may have already fallen upon our former territories again. You must know that 'the observer' is not an absolutely impartial 'god.' Within its rule baseline, there exists a... 'preference' or 'loophole' that we cannot understand but are certain exists. Its tolerance for 'highly homogenized' and 'stagnant' civilizations is extremely high, even viewing them as 'stable.' Conversely, for civilizations with 'rapid evolution,' 'diversity,' and 'prominent individual consciousness,' its 'clearing priority' is the highest. The Assimilators are not an accident; their path is, to some extent, a twisted 'compliance' with 'the observer's' rules."
This information was like ice water poured over their heads, sending a bone-chilling cold through everyone who heard it.
"the observer... doesn't purge 'bad' civilizations, but 'different' and 'active' ones?" Dr. Einstein's voice trembled. "What... what kind of rule self-check is this? This is simply... the natural enemy of consciousness!"
"So, the Assimilators choosing to annihilate their individuality and merge into the collective has instead become a... survival strategy?" Wu Yong felt a wave of absurdity and disgust.
Lin Mo remained silent. This truth was even darker than he had anticipated. The Star Language Alliance was precisely a collective of civilizations that encouraged diversity, rapid evolution, and respect for individual value. This was practically dancing on the barrel of "the observer's" gun.
"There is a second part to the information package," the concerto keystone continued to transmit, "Regarding 'Qi'."
Everyone's spirits lifted.
"The ancient consciousness 'Qi' was born far earlier than the Weaver. We suspect it may be an extremely rare individual consciousness sample that successfully survived a regional 'cleansing' by 'the observer' before the 'silent veil' was established. It is itself a precious research entity for opposing 'the observer,' and direct information regarding 'the observer's' operating mechanisms may be buried deep within its memories. Protect it well."
It turned out that "Qi's" value was far more than that of an ancient sage! It was itself a living fossil left over from an ancient "cleansing," an "artifact" that might contain key information for opposing "the observer"!
"Immediately raise 'Qi's' security level and designate it as a 'Level Zero Protected Object'." Lin Mo ordered without hesitation.
However, just as they were digesting these shocking secrets, a sudden change occurred!
"Warning! Detected unauthorized information backtracking!" Ling Shuang's voice suddenly rang out, filled with alertness. "The source... is ourselves! It's the communication link between 'Probe One' and the outside world!"
Within the archive space, some of the originally gently flowing lines of light suddenly became restless and distorted. Like a polluted river, they began to reverse-track the communication link between Ling Shuang's fleet and the Star Language Council main control center! A low hum filled with greed and coldness, sounding like billions of consciousnesses fused together, surged backward along this information link like a virus!
"It's the Assimilators!" The concerto keystone's consciousness fluctuations carried a strong warning. "They have long been lurking in the rule crevices on the periphery of the archive! They cannot directly enter the core area that requires 'key' authorization, but when we established stable communication, they caught the rule ripples generated by the information interaction and are attempting information intrusion and... positioning!"
"Cut the communication!" Lin Mo immediately ordered.
"Cannot completely cut it! The communication link has been locked by some kind of rule-level entanglement! Forcing a disconnection could cause an information storm and destroy the fleet's consciousness!" Ling Shuang reported. The situation was critical.
That cold hum became clearer and clearer, even starting to attempt to penetrate everyone's consciousness:
"...Diversity... is chaos... Unification... is order..."
"...Join... us... become... a part of... eternity..."
"...Coordinates... captured... The seed... will eventually... return to... the soil..."
"They've located our headquarters!" Wu Yong was horrified.
"Activate the highest level of the 'Wall-Building' protocol! Rule Shields to maximum power! All defense fleets enter combat-ready status!" Lin Mo's voice was like a rock, suppressing everyone's panic. "Ling Shuang! I authorize you to use the 'key fragment' temporary permissions to mobilize the archive's defense mechanisms and block the Assimilators' information intrusion! If necessary, you can sacrifice some non-core data!"
"Understood!" Ling Shuang's eyes sharpened, and she immediately established a deep connection with the key fragment, focusing her will on "expulsion" and "lockdown."
Driven by her consciousness, the key fragment erupted with unprecedented light, resonating with the entire Core Archive. Countless flowing lines of light, like soldiers receiving orders, gathered into a massive information firewall composed of pure rules, violently pushing against that reverse-surging cold hum.
Two invisible forces collided violently in the dimension of information!
There was no sound, no explosion, but everyone felt a violent tremor originating from the depths of their consciousness.
The shields of the "Probe One" fleet flickered violently, and the ship's hull let out an overburdened groan.
At the Star Language Council headquarters, violent ripples spread across the Rule Shields, as if they had been struck by an invisible giant hammer.
After a stalemate of about ten seconds, that cold hum let out a distorted hiss full of resentment and was finally forced back and cut off by the archive's rule firewall.
The communication link regained stability, but that heart-palpitating coldness still remained.
"The intrusion has been blocked." Ling Shuang's voice carried a hint of exhaustion. "But... they must have acquired some of our information, especially the approximate coordinates of the headquarters."
Calm was temporarily restored within the archive, but the tension permeating the air would not dissipate. The joy of acquiring precious knowledge and truth had been dampened by the imminent threat from the Assimilators.
Lin Mo looked at Ling Shuang's slightly pale face in the transmitted image, and at that information universe which had regained its calm yet seemed to hide more storms. He knew that the "Veil Watch" plan had met its most severe challenge.
They not only had to hide themselves under 'the observer's' gaze, but they also had to face an Assimilator that had already caught their scent and viewed them as prey. From now on, every step of the journey to find the other key fragments could potentially lead into a battlefield.
"Ling Shuang,Complete the download and screening of the core data in the archive as soon as possible.. Then, we must consider our next 'collection' operation." Lin Mo's voice came through the communication, with steely determination beneath the calm. "The target—the sinking place of the memory ark."
