114: Echoes of the Foundation
The first full meeting of the Star Language Council was not held in a physical hall, but rather suspended in a deep consciousness space constructed at the core of the "Star Language" Network. The brilliance of countless civilizations converged here in the form of data streams, psionic imprints, and pure concepts, weaving into a vast and colorful star map. Lin Mo's consciousness stood at the center of this star map. He could feel the gaze from millions of worlds, some curious, some expectant, some deeply worried, and also a hint of subtle scrutiny.
Dr. Einstein's virtual projection was displaying the unsettling data streams returned by the keystone probe. In the gigantic holographic image, the mathematical structures representing the fundamental rules of the universe—those constants and interacting force fields that should be eternally unchanging—showed a subtle but undeniable "fatigue" ripple, like the low-frequency hum of overloaded metal.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this 'wear and tear' is not a localized phenomenon," Einstein's voice, translated through the consciousness interpreter, echoed in the perception of every participant. "It exhibits systematic, correlative characteristics. A slight fluctuation in gravity can trigger a corresponding tremor in the strong nuclear force; the structure of the speed of light, under certain high-energy backgrounds, shows a 'viscosity' effect that theoretically shouldn't exist. This is not the collapse of a single rule, but a systemic decay in the coordination among all the rules that support our existence."
The image switched, showing several remote star systems that had prematurely entered heat death or experienced chaotic physical laws due to rule degradation, a shocking sight.
"We must act!" a representative from the highly technological civilization, the Sharp Advance Collective, declared, his consciousness stream like a sharp blade. "I propose immediately initiating the 'Rule Reinforcement' project, concentrating the 'star language' network's computing power to forcibly inject order and stabilize structures in the most severely affected areas!"
"Reckless!" a People of the Forest representative, whose form resembled an ancient tree and whose consciousness was gentle and long-lasting, retorted. "Forcibly interfering with unknown foundational processes could trigger unpredictable chain reactions. We should observe more deeply and understand the nature of this 'wear and tear'. Perhaps this is a natural stage in the universe's life cycle."
"Natural stage?" the Sharp Advance Collective representative countered. "The result of waiting and observing might be the slow collapse of the entire system! The Cradle's warning has already indicated that 'the echo is coming'! We don't have infinite time for leisurely research!"
Immediately, countless ripples of consciousness spread through the Council, with voices of agreement, opposition, concern, and compromise intertwining, forming a noisy sea of information. Ling Shuang stood beside Lin Mo, her psionic perception keenly catching the undercurrents beneath this sea of consciousness. She whispered to Lin Mo, "There's a big disagreement. The Sharp Advance faction demands immediate action, the conservatives advocate caution, and many more civilizations are waiting and watching, their fear like hidden reefs."
Lin Mo nodded. He understood this division. Facing a threat of unknown origin that could endanger the entire universe, it was normal to lack a unified response. He raised his hand, not raising his voice, but a stream of information, subtly adjusted by the Genesis Blueprint's authority, calmly spread out, like a stone dropped into a tumultuous sea, instantly drawing the attention of all consciousnesses.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Lin Mo's voice was calm and firm, "debate is necessary, but action is equally indispensable. Before we find a fundamental solution, we can at least do two things: First, establish an early warning system for cosmic health based on keystone probe data to slow down the catastrophic consequences of wear and tear as much as possible; second, we must immediately set out to personally verify the warning from Cradle-0923."
The holographic image focused on the mysterious coordinates—Cradle-0923.
"We know very little about the Cradle; we only know from the limited information shared by the Architect that they are some kind of... 'recording nodes' or 'stabilizing anchors' left over from the universe's initialization period," Lin Mo continued. "They are usually silent, only issuing warnings in extreme circumstances. 'The cornerstone is shaking' confirms our discovery; 'the echo is coming' points to an impending threat; and 'seeking the heart of resonance'... this might be the key."
He surveyed the star map of consciousness: "I propose forming a reconnaissance team to immediately proceed to Cradle-0923. We need the most advanced scientific analytical capabilities, the ability to respond to potential dangers, and the perception of the concept of 'resonance' which may contain phenomena beyond purely physical rules."
The personnel were quickly determined. Dr. Einstein was responsible for scientific analysis and data modeling; Ling Shuang, with her evolved Stellar Silver Psionic Energy, was responsible for perceiving abnormal psionic fluctuations and potential threats in the environment; Wu Yong led an elite engineering tactical team, responsible for navigation, logistics, and rapid engineering technical support in extreme environments. Xiao Li remained behind to coordinate the daily operations of the Star Language Council and maintain necessary communication with the "Tide of Delusion."
The reconnaissance ship, qianyuan ship, was a vessel specially designed for exploring complex high-dimensional environments and unknown rule areas. Its hull flowed with an energy-absorbing and detecting coating, and its engines could perform short, stealthy jumps between reality and data fissures.
The journey was not smooth. The closer they got to the Cradle-0923 coordinates, the more "aged" the surrounding space-time structure appeared. It wasn't dilapidated, but an indescribable sense of ancientness, as if the rules here were "set" earlier than other parts of the universe and were less affected by subsequent life and activity. Stars were sparse, the radiation background unusually low, even giving a false impression of being near the "edge of the universe."
"Detecting rule structures tending towards 'rigidity'," Einstein stared at the sensors. "The periphery of the physical constants here seems to be wrapped in an extremely stable 'insulating layer', which slows down the impact of external activity, but it might also... isolate something internal."
Ling Shuang closed her eyes, stellar silver light flowing around her. "I feel a... profound silence," she said softly, "but not emptiness. It's more like a prolonged slumber, deliberately maintained. At the same time, there's an extremely faint, yet all-pervading... sadness."
"Sadness?" Wu Yong adjusted the engine output to adapt to the viscous space-time structure here. "Can rule regions have emotions?"
"Not biological emotion," Ling Shuang tried to describe more precisely, "it's a... 'echo' left by some grand event, imprinted on the very foundation of existence. Like a stone recording the vibration of the moment it was split."
Finally, the qianyuan ship arrived at the target coordinates. The sensors showed no planets, stars, or artificial structures. Only a seemingly void darkness.
"Coordinates are correct, but... nothing?" Wu Yong frowned.
"No," Einstein's breathing quickened, "Scan background space-time curvature... amplify readings at the quantum foam level!"
When the sensors adjusted to an extremely sensitive mode, the sight before them made everyone on the bridge hold their breath. In the center of that seemingly void area, a "structure" that could not be described by conventional geometry floated. It was not made of matter, but more like a "knot" formed by space-time itself being forcibly bent and tied by some force. This "knot" constantly exhaled subtle rule ripples, maintaining the abnormal stability around it, and also emitting the profound "sadness" that Ling Shuang had perceived.
"This is Cradle-0923..." Lin Mo gazed at the space-time singularity. "A... scar of rules? Or rather... a 'seal' imposed to stabilize a greater wound?"
Just then, Ling Shuang suddenly opened her eyes, and Stellar Silver Psionic Energy uncontrollably surged outwards: "Something... has awakened! From inside that 'knot'!"
Almost simultaneously, on the holographic image, the space-time singularity began to pulsate like a heart. Each pulsation released a clear, visible ripple of distorted rules. Einstein discovered with horror that the ship's sensor readings began to jump wildly, and physical constants in localized areas showed brief but astonishing fluctuations.
"The 'echo'!" the doctor cried out, "This isn't a prophecy... it has already begun! This 'Cradle' itself, or what it seals, is releasing the 'echo' of rules!"
The qianyuan ship shook violently, and alarms blared. The external space-time structure was becoming extremely unstable, as if the foundation of the entire region was being continuously "pounded" by some force, triggering an unending series of rule tremors.
"Engine output unstable! Structural integrity field is decaying!" Wu Yong reported loudly, his hands flying across the control panel, trying to stabilize the ship.
Lin Mo suppressed the dizziness caused by the rule disturbance, concentrating on connecting to the Genesis Blueprint. He had to understand the nature of this "echo"! His authority was raised to the maximum, and his consciousness penetrated the qianyuan ship's hull, directly perceiving the chaotic rule ripples. In that instant, he "saw" it.
It wasn't just a chaotic release of energy. At the core of every rule tremor, there was an extremely faint, unique... "signature." An imprint of "Possibility" that he had once encountered, one that could only burst forth from life and consciousness in extreme circumstances, defying absolute order.
"This isn't an attack..." Lin Mo murmured, a startling conjecture forming in his mind. "This is more like... a 'distress signal'! A twisted, amplified, pain-filled distress signal!"
He turned to Ling Shuang and Einstein, his eyes gleaming with insight: "I might have been wrong... The 'echo' might not refer to an external threat. This 'echo' itself might be the heart of resonance's painful cry! This 'Cradle' isn't sealing a monster, but rather... an ancient, wounded 'consciousness,' a consciousness intimately connected to the fundamental rules of the universe!"
Just then, an unprecedented, strong rule "echo" swept over them, like a silent thunderclap. The qianyuan ship's shields instantly overloaded, and the hull structure groaned under the strain. The internal lights flickered wildly, then completely extinguished, leaving only emergency red lights and garbled data streams on the holographic image, illuminating their astonished faces.
Darkness descended, accompanied by the continuous, painful rule wail from the external space-time, as if from the very beginning of the universe's creation.
