177: Star Marks and Sprouts
Three standard centuries have quietly passed since the brilliance of the "final protocol" reshaped the underlying rules of the universe.
The Star Language Alliance, once a collection of civilizations tightly united for survival, has now evolved into a behemoth spanning dozens of galaxies, encompassing thousands of intelligent races, and extending its influence to the very fringes of the universe. Its capital, the "Nexus of Myriad Laws," is no longer the perilous place of chaotic rules it once was; it has been transformed into an exquisitely structured super-artificial celestial body with a diameter comparable to a small star. Countless buildings of varying styles entwine around a massive rule-stabilizing framework like symbiotic vines. Ships from different civilizations weave through the space, where the glow of psionic energy and the streams of technology intertwine into a never-ending symphony of prosperity.
However, absolute peace and prosperity have never existed. Once the immediate external threats to survival vanished, the long-suppressed internal differences and contradictions began to quietly germinate in the loosened soil.
The "Watcher" remains as the symbolic flagship of the Alliance, but more often than not, it serves as a mobile museum, diplomatic platform, and advanced research institute. Actual day-to-day governance has been handed over to a complex but efficiently functioning "Star Language Council," composed of representatives from various member civilizations.
At this moment, within the observation hall of the bridge of the "Watcher"—modernized yet still retaining its original historical appearance—two figures were looking down at the breathtaking spectacle of the "Nexus of Myriad Laws" below.
One of them wore the simple uniform of the Alliance's Supreme Commander, with the evolved emblem of the Star Language Network on his epaulettes. His face remained resolute, but the corners of his eyes were etched with the marks of time, and his gaze was deep, as if containing the storms of three centuries. He was Lin Mo. Although he had gradually transferred specific political affairs to the Council, as the executor of the "final protocol" and the spiritual symbol of the Alliance, his influence remained unmatched.
The other wore a long robe of Stellar Silver Psionic Energy. Her appearance showed little aging; instead, her aura had grown increasingly calm and transparent, as if synchronized with the very breath of the universe. She was Ling Shuang, the Dean of the Star Language Psionic Academy and the primary promoter of cross-consciousness communication and understanding within the Alliance.
"The Council was in an uproar again today," Lin Mo's voice carried a hint of faint exhaustion, not physical, but mental. "The 'Resource Extraction Faction' and the 'Nature Conservation Faction' are fighting tooth and nail over the development rights of the 'Emerald Nebula.' One side believes the abundant Zero-Element Crystals there are the key to the Alliance's development over the next millennium; the other insists that the nebula is the last known large-scale habitat for an 'Original Rule Lifeform'—the 'Light Vortex Jellyfish'—and that development would lead to the functional extinction of the species."
Ling Shuang sighed softly. Her psionic perception, like invisible ripples, swept through the bustling city below, clearly 'hearing' the countless intertwined whispers of consciousness filled with anxiety, desire, and contention. "Prosperity brings choices, and choices inevitably accompany disagreement. This is a stage almost every maturing civilization must go through. Remember the revelation left to us by the 'Sprout Era'? The value of life lies not only in its form of existence, but also in its potential for evolution. The key is balance."
"Balance..." Lin Mo repeated the word, his gaze fixed on the distance. "Easier said than done. The Alliance's territory is vast now, and the forms of civilization vary greatly. Some civilizations have experienced a technological explosion under the protection of the protocol, longing to explore deeper cosmic mysteries, even beginning to touch upon rule domains that even the 'Weavers' never delved into. This in itself brings new uncertainties. Others choose to develop inward, refining spiritual arts, and some... have even begun to develop a dependence on and worship of the power of the 'final protocol,' giving rise to the embryonic forms of new religions."
He pulled up a top-secret report and projected it before them. It had been submitted by Wu Yong (who had now been promoted to Supreme Consultant of the Alliance Security Council, primarily responsible for dealing with non-traditional security threats).
"In the past fifty years, seventeen incidents of attempting to illegally replicate or utilize residual 'Assimilators' technology for consciousness fusion have been discovered and handled within the Alliance territory," Lin Mo's tone was grave. "Although the scale has been small and they were all contained in time, this trend of thought... has not been eradicated. The temptation of 'Oneness' still exists for certain individuals or groups who feel lost in the rapid development. We destroyed the main body of the 'Assimilators,' but we seem unable to completely clear the shadow their ideology cast upon the universe."
Ling Shuang nodded; she had also noticed this. "The Psionic Academy has been monitoring related consciousness fluctuations. Some extreme technologists believe that individual consciousness is a product of low efficiency and long for a higher 'Unified Mind.' Meanwhile, some factions that have gone astray in spiritual exploration pursue absolute spiritual 'transcendence,' which is essentially a disguised form of self-annihilation. These are all new subjects for internal governance."
Just then, a gentle yet slightly urgent communication request broke in from Dr. Einstein—he was now the Chief Consultant of the Alliance Academy of Sciences, leading the search for clues to the 'Ancient Lost Era.'
"Lin Mo! Ling Shuang!" Einstein's virtual image appeared. The old scientist looked more excited than he had centuries ago, perhaps even a bit... uneasy? "We've had a breakthrough discovery in the 'Silent Corridor' region pointed to by the 'Drifting Beacon'! But it's not about the ancient civilizations!"
He quickly shared a set of extremely complex, self-iterating data streams. "We've detected an... unprecedented rule fluctuation! Its source isn't any known matter or energy; it's more like the... materialization of a 'concept'! It's extremely weak, but its nature is different from any rule we're familiar with! More importantly, the key fragments—I mean, the 'historical resonance' of the six fragments that have integrated into the cosmic background—have produced an extremely faint... 'rejection' reaction to this fluctuation!"
Lin Mo and Ling Shuang's expressions instantly became serious. The power of the key fragments originated from the "final protocol," representing the correction and supplementation of the existing cosmic rules. What did it mean for a rule fluctuation to trigger their "rejection"?
"Can you determine its nature and source?" Lin Mo asked immediately.
"I can't be entirely sure!" Einstein shook his head. "It's too weak, too peculiar! But based on the mathematical model's deduction, it seems related to... a deeper interaction between 'existence' and 'nothingness' that we don't yet understand. It's not like the extreme 'nothingness' of the 'void whisper'; it's more like an... 'Existence Paradox'? Or rather, a trace of some 'possibility that the rules themselves refuse to acknowledge'!"
"A possibility that the rules refuse to acknowledge?" Ling Shuang keenly caught the key point. "The 'final protocol' corrected the rules and secured space for diversity. But this fluctuation seems to exist before the protocol's correction, or even... outside of it?"
"It's possible!" Einstein waved his arms excitedly. "This might explain why the resonance of the key fragments rejects it! Because what it represents might be a... 'potential state' of the universe that even the 'Weavers' and the ancient allies never envisioned, or perhaps actively 'shielded'! Something that exists in the 'blind spot' of the current rule system!"
This news was of no small consequence. It meant that the "safe" universe they thought they had secured might still hide unknown domains or risks at its base that even the "final protocol" had not covered.
"Keep this news strictly confidential, limited only to the High Council," Lin Mo ordered quickly. "Einstein, continue your research, but be absolutely cautious. Do not proactively 'contact' or 'stimulate' that fluctuation. We need to understand it first and assess its potential impact."
"I understand!" Einstein's image disappeared, clearly eager to return to his lab.
Silence returned to the observation hall, but the atmosphere had changed.
"It seems the duties of the 'Watchers' are far from over," Ling Shuang said softly, her eyes filled with thought. "We fended off the 'observer's' purging and dismantled the 'Assimilators' unification, but now new 'shadows' originating from the deeper layers of the rules themselves may be emerging."
Lin Mo walked to the massive viewport, gazing at the boundless starry sky. "The universe is more complex than we imagined, and more... 'lively.' It always seems to be trying to manifest all its possibilities, even if some possibilities appear contradictory or even dangerous." He paused for a moment before continuing, "Wu Yong's report, the Council's bickering, Einstein's discovery... these all point to the same question: In an era without an obvious external threat, how should the Alliance define its boundaries? How should it manage the growing internal differences and the dangerous ideologies that may arise? And how should it deal with new challenges that may come from the underlying rules?"
He turned around to look at Ling Shuang, the long-absent light belonging to an explorer and decision-maker reigniting in his eyes.
"I think it's time to launch the next phase of the 'Seed of Star Whisper' project."
The "Seed of Star Whisper" project was a long-term talent cultivation program proposed by Lin Mo after the war of the protocol. It aimed to select and train the next generation of leaders who possessed a cross-civilization perspective, deep understanding of the rules, and a firm will. For centuries, it had supplied the Alliance with a large number of talents, but Lin Mo had always maintained a cautious attitude toward the core inheritance of the "Genesis Blueprint" permissions and supreme decision-making responsibilities.
"Do you have candidates in mind?" Ling Shuang asked. She knew that Lin Mo's words meant he was truly beginning to consider handing over that heavy responsibility.
"There are a few candidates; they have all shown exceptional potential in different fields." Lin Mo pulled up several encrypted files. "But the final choice will require testing. Not just a test of ability, but a tempering of character. They need to understand that power is not for control, but for guarding possibilities; decision-making is not for unifying thought, but for balancing differences."
He pointed to a remote, recently joined system on the star map: "There, a young civilization is facing a critical technological ethics choice, and internal conflicts are fierce. I plan to send an inspection team and have several 'Seed' candidates participate as observers—not to intervene, but only to observe, learn, and finally submit their own insight reports."
"That is an excellent testing ground," Ling Shuang agreed. "At the same time, Einstein's discovery also needs someone to follow up on the research, but this requires extremely high rule sensitivity and a rigorous scientific attitude. Perhaps we can involve another group of 'Seeds' interested in basic rule research, under strict monitoring."
"It's settled then," Lin Mo nodded. "What we need to do is not to pave the way for them, but to create opportunities for them to face the complexity of the real universe. The torch of the watchers will eventually be passed. But before that, we must ensure that the hands taking the torch are steady enough and the vision is far-reaching enough."
He looked out the window once more. Beneath the stars, the "Nexus of Myriad Laws" remained brilliant, but in the deep darkness where that light could not reach, new mysteries and challenges were quietly brewing. The epic of the Star Language Alliance had turned the page on the magnificent chapter of the ultimate confrontation with the "observer" and the "Assimilators," entering a perhaps more complex era of governance and exploration that required even more wisdom and patience.
The Star Scars are deep, and the sprouts are gathering strength in the unknown soil.
