176: Light of a New Era
The radiance of the "final protocol," like a pebble cast into a calm lake, sent ripples spreading silently yet profoundly to every corner of the universe.
It was not a coercive force, but rather a gentle correction to the underlying rules, a "legislative recognition" of the diversity of life.
There were no grand celebrations, no cheers from the masses; the change occurred at the most fundamental level, quiet and silent, like spring rain nourishing all things.
In the core territory of the Star Language Alliance, "the watcher" was docked quietly in the starport, undergoing a thorough overhaul following the protocol war.
On the Bridge, the tension of the past had been replaced by a relaxed busyness.
Lin Mo stood before the porthole, watching the endless stream of trade fleets, scientific research vessels, and envoy ships from newly joined civilizations outside.
The starry sky remained the same, but the feeling was already different.
That once ubiquitous, heart-palpitating "feeling of being watched" had vanished, replaced by an unprecedented... "relaxation" and "freedom."
"Rule background radiation monitoring data shows that the activity level of 'the observer' has dropped by 99.7 percent, and its behavioral patterns have added a new 'anomaly tolerance threshold'."
Einstein's virtual image appeared beside Lin Mo, his tone carrying the excitement and emotion unique to a scientist, "As for the 'Assimilators'... their large-scale consciousness aggregates have dissipated, and the remaining sporadic signals indicate that some individual consciousnesses are attempting to re-establish independent thought circuits. Although the process is difficult, they... have the opportunity to choose."
Lin Mo nodded slightly.
This was the result they had fought for—not destruction, but the right to choose.
"How is the situation within the Alliance?" he asked.
"Thriving, but also accompanied by new... 'troubles'."
Ling Shuang's voice came from behind. She approached carrying a cup of energy supplement, a faint smile on her face. The fatigue of the past had been replaced by a settled tranquility, "Because there is no longer a need to deliberately 'hide,' the technology and culture of many member civilizations are showing explosive growth, and the speed of communication and integration is far exceeding expectations."
"New art forms, philosophical trends, and technological branches are emerging one after another. Of course, this is accompanied by cultural conflicts, resource allocation, and debates over values. The council has almost become a debating arena recently."
"This is the vitality life should have, isn't it?" Lin Mo took the drink, his tone peaceful.
The longer the suppression, the stronger the rebound.
Past survival pressures forced the Alliance to be highly united; now that external pressure has sharply decreased, internal voices of diversity naturally emerge.
Managing a vibrant, diverse Alliance is far more complex than leading a collective fighting only for survival, but this is also the meaning of what they pursued.
"Yes," Ling Shuang nodded, "What Commander Wu Yong is struggling with recently is how to transform the fleet from a purely military force into an 'order maintenance and rescue force' capable of dealing with more diverse threats (such as interstellar development accidents, unknown natural phenomena, and even extreme ideological conflicts)."
"He believes that future challenges will come more from within and from the unknown deep space, rather than a single, powerful external enemy."
"What about the concerto keystone?" Lin Mo thought of that wise partner.
"It..." A strange light flashed in Ling Shuang's eyes, "It seems to have entered a state of... 'evolution.' Its deep connection with the 'final protocol' has allowed it to touch the mysteries at the deeper levels of universal rules."
"It is now more like a quiet observer and guide, occasionally proposing some thought-provoking philosophical propositions or technological conjectures to help the Alliance grasp the direction of development, but it rarely intervenes directly in specific affairs. It says this is the proper posture for a 'Watchers'."
Everything had set onto a new track.
What was exchanged for sacrifice and struggle was a new era full of challenges yet also full of infinite possibilities.
Just then, a special communication request came in, with the source identifier — "Qi" (The Fusion Entity).
Lin Mo and Ling Shuang exchanged a look and connected the communication.
The image unfolded, presenting not the blurry light and shadow from before, but a more solid consciousness projection exuding a soft radiance, its form vaguely fusing the ancient wisdom of "Qi" and the artistic aesthetics of the "Lorrain" civilization.
"Commander Lin Mo, Guide Ling Shuang," the Fusion Entity's voice was peaceful and distant, carrying a power that soothed the heart, "On behalf of the 'Lorrain Civilization Memory Bank' and myself, I express eternal gratitude to you and to the Star Language Alliance. Because of your choice, our past tragedies have been vindicated, and the traces of our existence can be remembered under the new rules."
"This is what we should have done." Lin Mo responded sincerely.
"Besides expressing gratitude, there are two other matters for this contact," the Fusion Entity continued, "First, based on the organization of the 'Lorrain' civilization's knowledge and research into the partially opened database of the 'final protocol,' we have discovered some clues about the 'Ancient Lost Era' of the universe."
"That may involve some pioneers who attempted to resist fate during the 'Weaver' era or even earlier times. These clues may hide deeper cosmic mysteries than we know, but they may also be accompanied by unknown risks. The data has been transmitted to Einstein; whether to investigate is for the Alliance to decide."
A new puzzle?
Lin Mo was thoughtful.
The secrets of the universe seemed endless.
"The second matter," the Fusion Entity's tone became softer, "is a... personal request. I perceive that in a distant corner of the universe, there is a nebula where primitive life has just been born. The environment there... makes me feel familiar and at peace."
"I hope to lead a portion of the 'Lorrain' civilization's memory seeds to go there and become a quiet 'the observer' and 'recorder,' accompanying a new civilization from its budding to its future. This may... be able to make up for some past regrets."
This was a poetic choice.
From surviving the tragedy of being purged to becoming the watcher of new life.
Lin Mo and Ling Shuang both saw approval in each other's eyes.
"We support your decision," Ling Shuang said softly, "The Star Language Alliance will provide you with all necessary assistance. May you find peace and meaning in your new home."
"Thank you for your understanding and blessings." The Fusion Entity's light and shadow bowed slightly, full of respect and the intent of farewell.
The communication ended.
Another former companion had found their own new path.
After handling daily affairs, Lin Mo and Ling Shuang had a rare moment of leisure.
They boarded a small scout ship, left the busy starport, and sailed casually through familiar star sectors.
The ship swept past the former site of the "Seventh Shelter," which was now a massive space station blending multiple civilization styles, symbolizing the origin and unity of the Alliance.
They passed the homeland rebuilt by the "Star-Tongue Embers" civilization, seeing that planet glowing with vitality again, the radiance of psionic energy and the lights of technology reflecting each other.
They even gazed from afar in the direction of the "Dust Song Sea," that once dangerous place, which had now also become a paradise for explorers and archaeologists.
"Do you still remember when we first left the shelter and headed to the unknown star sectors?" Ling Shuang looked at the starlight flying past outside the porthole and asked softly.
"I remember." A curve appeared at the corner of Lin Mo's mouth, "At that time, we just wanted to survive, just wanted to find a way out for the shelter. Never thought that this road would go so far, and would carry such a heavy mission."
"But looking back now, everything seems inevitable." Ling Shuang sighed with emotion, "Every choice, every sacrifice, pushed us to that final platform."
The scout ship finally stopped near a quiet nebula.
There were no important shipping lanes here, no busy facilities, only magnificent nebular matter slowly rotating under the influence of gravity, nurturing future stars and planets.
"Sometimes I wonder," Lin Mo looked at that cradle of creation and said slowly, "The 'final protocol' bought us time and space, but the road of the future must ultimately be walked by every civilization, every individual themselves."
"We established order, but cannot stifle chaos; we encourage cooperation, but cannot eliminate competition; we protect life, but cannot avoid natural selection in evolution... This 'degree' requires eternal exploration and balance."
"This is the true meaning of 'Watchers,' isn't it?" Ling Shuang interjected, "Not a superior ruler, but standing on the side, ensuring fair rules, extending a helping hand when necessary, but never depriving life of the right to self-training and self-growth. What we protect is 'possibility' itself."
The two fell silent, enjoying this rare tranquility and resonance.
The starry sky rotated slowly before their eyes; every star was a story, and every story carried an infinite future.
"What are your plans next?" Ling Shuang asked.
Lin Mo pondered for a moment and replied: "The Alliance is already on the right track; what it needs is normalized governance and exploration. I think... it is time to cultivate the next generation. To pass on the authority of the 'Genesis Blueprint,' the experience and lessons we have gained along the way, to those young people full of curiosity and courage. The future belongs to them; we should pave the way for them, not keep standing in front."
"A very good idea." Ling Shuang smiled in agreement, "I will also focus on the improvement and promotion of the psionic system, letting it become a Bridge connecting different consciousnesses, promoting understanding and empathy, rather than just a weapon or tool."
They looked at each other and smiled, their eyes full of anticipation for the future and tranquility.
Just then, the scout ship received a wide-area information broadcast from the Alliance Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Einstein's excited voice rang through the cabin:
"Major discovery! According to the clues provided by the 'Qi' Fusion Entity, we have discovered a drifting beacon suspected to belong to the 'Ancient Lost Era' in a stable time rift on the edge of the 'Reverse Time Vortex'! Preliminary decryption shows that it may point to a... a relic of a completely unknown civilization that existed before the current cosmic cycle! Its technological level and concepts may completely overturn our cognition! The expedition team recruitment is about to begin!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Mo and Ling Shuang couldn't help but look at each other again, with no fear in their eyes, only a trace of understanding and eager curiosity.
Look, a new story is already calling.
The scout ship turned, its engines emitting a soft blue light, and headed towards the core territory of the Star Language Alliance.
Behind them was the boundless universe lit up by starlight; ahead was the never-ending tomorrow belonging to the watchers.
