116: Ancient Shadows and Choices
The qianyuan ship, dragging its damaged hull like a dying leviathan, struggled into Watch Outpost—the main base established by Lin Mo's team after becoming Cooperative Observers. Alarms had long been blaring, and medical teams, engineering crews, and emergency response units swarmed like worker ants. When the hatch opened with a grating hydraulic hiss, revealing scorched wiring, congealed fire-extinguishing foam, and exhausted, partially injured crew members, the heavy atmosphere almost materialized.
Lin Mo was helped down by Ling Shuang and Wu Yong. His face was still pale, but the fire in his eyes had not extinguished; instead, it burned even more fiercely due to the horrors he had personally experienced and the astonishing information he had acquired. Dr. Einstein's virtual projection appeared much fainter than usual, clearly indicating that maintaining the qianyuan ship's final data link and consciousness channel had consumed an immense amount of his computing power. Ling Shuang's psionic fluctuations were somewhat unstable, as if she was still resonating with a distant wail. Only Wu Yong, relying on his excellent physical fitness and iron will, could still stand tall, loudly directing the engineering team in emergency repairs and the transfer of the data core.
"Immediately convene an emergency meeting of the highest level," Lin Mo's voice was hoarse but carried an undeniable authority. "Scope: core members, permanent Star Language Council representatives, and... invite the "Tide of Delusion" to connect."
The order was executed swiftly. Within an hour, in the deepest strategic command center of Watch Outpost, a meeting that would determine the future direction of the universe quietly began. Not all participants were physically present; many participated as holographic projections or through consciousness links, but the solemnity and urgency transcended space, pressing upon the heart of every "person."
Lin Mo wasted no time with pleasantries; he directly shared all the data recorded by the qianyuan ship—from the bizarre spatiotemporal singularity form of Cradle-0923 to the destructive rule "reverberation" impact, and then to the fragmented information he "heard" during his daring consciousness contact.
When the fragment of thought containing [cocoon of setting, for the sake of 'Possibility', cost, they return, reverberation is the prelude to annihilation] was played, the entire command center fell into a dead silence. Even the most knowledgeable civilization representatives experienced violent fluctuations in their consciousness.
"So, the heart of resonance is an ancient... prisoner? Or a martyr?" A representative from the Silent Observer civilization (a race that adheres to absolute rationality and information gathering as its highest principles) spoke for the first time, his voice like cold metal friction.
"More likely both," Dr. Einstein's projection stabilized somewhat. He pulled up a data comparison chart with fragments of the apex of order. "The 'tide of delusion' analysis is correct. The heart of resonance and the apex of order are highly homologous at the code level. I speculate that they are both products of the so-called 'set order' versus 'spontaneous life order' civil war during the universe's initialization period."
He zoomed in on a key node in the data model: "the apex of order represents a pure rule weapon of the 'set order' pushed to an extreme, attempting to annihilate all 'Possibility,' while the heart of resonance... according to the information fragments Lin Mo obtained, it might have once been part of the 'set order,' but due to contact with or identification with 'Possibility' (likely referring to the nascent sprouts of early life or the embryonic form of free will), it generated 'resonance,' which then led to its own 'tearing' and 'pain.' It was imprisoned in the 'cocoon of setting' (which is the Cradle), and its painful struggle leaked out as rule 'reverberation.' This 'reverberation' continuously weakens the foundation of the universe's rules, which is what we observe as 'fatigue.' And when the 'reverberation' reaches a certain critical point..."
"It will trigger a complete rule collapse, which is 'annihilation,'" Lin Mo continued, his gaze sweeping across the room. "And 'they'... this pronoun, most likely refers to the initial imprisoners, or beings directly related to this ancient civil war, existing even earlier than the Architects. The heart of resonance fears their 'return.'"
"Earlier than the Architects?" The Sharp Advance Collective representative's stream of consciousness was filled with disbelief. "The Architects are already the basic managers of the system! Are there 'managers above managers'?"
"Or, the Architects were not the original designers," Ling Shuang said softly, the light of spiritual insight flickering in her star-silver eyes. "They might just be... inheritors, or maintainers. And 'they' are the true Creators, or... scavengers."
This conjecture sent shivers down everyone's spines.
"We need an explanation from the Architects!" The People of the Forest representative's consciousness was filled with worry. "They must know about this!"
"We've already tried conventional contact," Xiao Li reported. "The Architects' civilization still maintains silence, only replying with a highly encrypted and self-referential protocol code, which roughly translates to: 'Observation ongoing, permissions unlocked, causality self-evolving.'"
"This again!" Wu Yong angrily slammed his fist on the control panel. "They are always just spectators!"
"Perhaps not spectators," Lin Mo slowly shook his head. "'Permissions unlocked'... This might mean that information about 'them' is the highest taboo within the Architects' own protocols. Or, actively revealing this information itself would trigger some kind of... counter-mechanism."
The meeting reached an impasse. The enemy was unknown, the threat level immeasurable, and the most likely informed power chose silence.
"So, what is our current course of action?" The Sharp Advance Collective representative brought the discussion back to reality. "Do we focus all our efforts on trying to 'heal' the suffering heart of resonance, to eliminate the source of the 'reverberation'? Or do we prioritize preparing for war, to deal with their possible return? Or, a dual approach?"
"Healing the heart of resonance is no easy task," Einstein warned. "Its pain is deeply intertwined with the universe's rules; forced 'treatment' could lead to an instantaneous rupture of the rule chain, accelerating annihilation. We need a method that can... resonate with its core consciousness, guide its pain to a stable release, or transform it into a stable form. This goes beyond our current purely technological or psionic capabilities."
"Perhaps, the 'star language' Network itself is the key." Lin Mo mused for a moment, proposing an idea. "The heart of resonance suffers because of 'Possibility,' and despairs because of loneliness. The 'star language' Network gathers the consciousness, emotions, and flashes of 'Possibility' from countless lives. If we can construct a sufficiently grand, sufficiently inclusive 'consciousness resonance field'—not to suppress its pain, but to share it, to understand it, to give it new meaning... is it possible to soothe it?"
This idea carried a strong idealistic overtone, but it also contained a peculiar logic. To use the collective consciousness of a life network to soothe an ancient rule consciousness wounded by "life's Possibility."
"This requires deep collaboration from all member civilizations of the Star Language Council, and even a certain degree of opening of consciousness cores, which carries extremely high risks," the Silent Observer representative calmly pointed out.
"But the risk of annihilation is even higher!" The People of the Forest representative responded. "I am willing to try; the People of the Forest's consciousness network can join as a sub-node."
"The Sharp Advance Collective can provide the necessary computing power support and rule stabilization framework."
"We can also contribute a portion of our consciousness computing power..."
More and more representatives began to express their positions. In the face of absolute crisis, unity became the only option.
"Then, the resolutions are as follows," Lin Mo concluded, his voice regaining strength. "First, launch the Peace of Mind Plan, based on the 'star language' Network, to construct a super-giant consciousness resonance field, with the goal of establishing stable communication with the heart of resonance and attempting to guide its pain. Dr. Einstein and Ling Shuang, you are responsible for the design of the technical framework and the psionic guidance core. Second, establish the 'Ancient Threat Investigation Committee,' consolidating all research on ancient cosmic legends, anomalous ruins, and information left by the Architects, to fully search for all clues about 'them.' Wu Yong, you are responsible for The Committee's security and operational support. Third, raise the cosmic alert level; all keystone probes enter maximum monitoring mode, observing any rule anomalies that may be related to 'their return.' Fourth, continue to attempt communication with the Architects, seeking methods to break through their information blockade."
The orders were quickly broken down and conveyed. The entire "Star Language" Network began to operate with unprecedented efficiency.
Just as the meeting was about to conclude, Xiao Li suddenly received a top-priority encrypted message from the "tide of delusion." Throughout the entire meeting, this special "ally" had maintained silent observation.
The content of the message was simple, just a constantly self-refreshing stream of code that eventually coalesced into a perplexing statement:
[Detected non-painful rule embedded fragments in the "reverberation" pattern. Fragments point to coordinates: [an extremely complex set of mathematical descriptions, seemingly transcending the current cosmic dimension]. These coordinates do not match any known Architect facilities or Cradles. Speculation: possibly traces of "them," or... the key to the "cage." Recommendation: prioritize investigation.]
This message was like a bomb thrown into a calm lake!
The "Tide of Delusion" had actually stripped hidden clues from the destructive "reverberation"! Where did these coordinates point? Traces of "them"? Or the "key" to rescuing the heart of resonance?
Lin Mo exchanged glances with Ling Shuang and Einstein, seeing The Shock and resolve in each other's eyes.
The original plan had to be adjusted.
The Peace of Mind Plan would proceed as usual; it was the cornerstone for stabilizing the situation.
But at the same time, a most elite team had to be immediately organized to go to the unknown coordinates provided by the "tide of delusion."
There, the final answer might be hidden, or it might be... an endless abyss.
"A new mission," Lin Mo's voice was low and firm, his gaze falling on Ling Shuang and Wu Yong. "We need a team to go to a place that may not exist on our cognitive map. This time, what we face may be the true 'ancient shadow.'"
