83: To no avail
"Kadeyafu, I understand now why your grandfather entrusted you to me for training."
"It seems the rumors are true. You're not like a real Chechen Republic of Ichkeria; you're more like a timid of The Rabbits."
As he spoke, he drew a knife, walked around the stunned Kadeyafu, and slowly advanced.
"Are you naive or stupid?"
"The higher-ups have clearly instructed that any enemies encountered can be dealt with directly."
Saying this, he walked up to a bearded man, grabbed his hair, and effortlessly lifted him up. His strength was astonishing.
"Don't you understand what this means?"
Kadeyafu looked at him in horror, trying to stop him.
"Wait, they are civilians..."
Basayev's expression became even more ferocious.
"Heh heh, they are ready-made achievements!"
Then, a scene that was unbearable to witness unfolded. The bearded man struggled a few times but finally collapsed weakly onto the ground.
The refugees who witnessed all this screamed and tried to flee. In their eyes, Basayev at this moment seemed like an evil spirit that had emerged from the abyss.
Unfortunately, they had only taken a few steps before the surrounding soldiers forced them back with their guns.
Basayev grabbed the man's hair and dragged him from the crowd to stand before Kadeyafu.
Kadeyafu recognized him; he was the same timid person who had just spoken to him.
"Kill him!" Basayev said, throwing a knife at the man's feet.
Kadeyafu looked at the man before him, his eyes filled with tears, full of a desperate desire to live.
"Pick up the knife and kill him!" Seeing that he didn't move, Basayev ordered loudly.
Kadeyafu was startled. He trembled as he picked up the knife and raised it. But his eyes met the man's, and he lowered his hand again.
"I can't do it. They are just refugees. Let them go."
"I promised your grandfather that I would make you a ruthless warrior," Basayev said coldly. "The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria doesn't need cowards!"
"We are about to achieve independence. Like this, you're not even as good as a child!" He said, pulling out his pistol and firing several shots at the pleading man until he stopped moving.
When Kadeyafu saw this scene, his legs gave way, and he slumped to the ground.
"Someone, help him up. I want him to watch how I deal with these people!" Basayev said. "Since you won't do it, I'll do it for you."
"All these merits will be credited to you." The soldiers nearby immediately stepped forward and helped Kadeyafu up.
At this moment, Kadeyafu lowered his head, his entire being seemingly devoid of vitality.
Basayev grinned sinisterly as he approached the refugees, enjoying the process of picking them out one by one, like selecting sheep in a slaughterhouse.
He noticed a mother and daughter. The mother was holding her daughter tightly, trying to hide deeper in the crowd.
The Little girl was curled up in her mother's arms, her hands tightly gripping her mother's clothes, turning blue from the effort. She squeezed her eyes shut, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Although the mother was afraid, there was a look of tenacity on her face. She bit her lower lip tightly, wanting to protect her daughter.
Basayev's smile became even more twisted; he liked the look of the mother and daughter. He reached out and grabbed the woman's hair, pulling her out of the crowd.
"Ah!..." The woman suddenly let out a heartbreaking scream, but at the critical moment, she released her tight hold on her child, trying to push her into the crowd. This was the only thing she could do for her child in her desperation.
However, unexpectedly, the Little girl who had kept her eyes tightly shut suddenly opened them at this moment and bit Basayev's arm fiercely like a little wild beast.
"Hiss!" Basayev cried out in pain and violently shook his hand. The mother and daughter were thrown towards Kadeyafu by a huge force. The force was so great it instilled fear.
The mother and daughter rolled a few times on the ground before stopping, then frantically hugged each other tightly. Basayev shook his bitten hand, his eyes bloodshot, and his smile gradually twisted.
Even so, he maintained his last shred of reason, turning to Kadeyafu, his tone harsh: "I'll give you one more chance. Kill them now. Prove you're not a coward."
The piercing wails echoed in Kadeyafu's ears. He lowered his head, almost not daring to lift it. He was afraid to see the despair in the eyes of the mother and daughter.
"Forgive me..." He silently prayed for them in his heart. This was perhaps the only thing he could do at this moment.
"Bah! Coward!" Basayev roared. "How could the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria have a man like you? I really underestimated the difficulty of your grandfather's task. Since you don't dare, then I'll do it."
Saying this, he directly grabbed the woman's neck and suddenly exerted force with his right hand, lifting her up by the throat. The woman felt suffocated and began to struggle violently, but her resistance was useless against Basayev.
Basayev enjoyed watching their expressions change from struggle to despair; it excited him. The Little girl struggled to stand up and frantically punched Basayev's thick thighs, but this attack was like an itch to him.
At this point, the woman's eyeballs began to turn white, and her struggles became weaker and weaker. Basayev mocked the Little girl, saying, "Try harder, or else I'll send you to join your mother in a moment." After saying this, he burst into laughter.
The Little girl threw punch after punch through her tears, even though she was already exhausted. How she wished she could defeat this demon and save her mother.
However, reality was so cruel. After throwing her last punch, the Little girl finally collapsed from exhaustion, but she still clung tightly to her mother's calf.
Basayev's laughter became even more sinister.
Whether sincerely or to echo the Captain, the other soldiers also laughed.
Along this long border, only the soldiers' laughter echoed in the air.
The refugees lowered their heads, not daring to look directly at the scene before them.
The clouds were thick, blocking the sunlight.
A gust of wind blew, carrying a few fallen leaves, circling in the air.
Suddenly, with a loud "boom," an explosive detonated among the soldiers, blowing up several soldiers who were gathered together. Everyone was stunned.
Immediately after, continuous gunshots rang out.
The soldiers' laughter stopped immediately. They began to look around, searching for the direction of the gunfire and seeking cover.
Basayev quickly ducked down, releasing his right hand.
The woman was able to breathe and couldn't help but cough violently. In that moment, she felt she was only a hair's breadth away from death.
But Basayev had no intention of letting her go. He pulled the woman in front of him as a hostage, hiding his body behind her and the Little girl.
"Enemy attack!"
"There's an enemy..."
Another "boom." The soldier who was shouting was blown to pieces before he could finish his sentence.
"It's a rocket-propelled grenade!"
"Damn it, there's also a machine gun!"
