11: Chapter 11: To Accept or Not to Accept? The Data Speaks.
Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo was gone for five hours.
During this time, work in the entire command center of the "Pangu Base" had stopped.
Outside, tens of thousands of people on the construction site were still working enthusiastically according to Jiang Ning's previous instructions, but the technical experts here were all sitting still, waiting.
They were waiting for Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo to come out of the laboratory and give a definitive word.
Director Zhao Lixin was also on edge.
He trusted Jiang Ning, but he also knew the weight Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo carried in the engineering circle.
If even Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo couldn't be convinced, the subsequent work would be truly impossible to carry out.
Jiang Ning, however, acted as if nothing was the matter.
She went about her own business, spreading out another map in the conference room, gesturing on it with a pen, and muttering things no one could understand.
"The water diversion channel must go around the east side; that place is shady, and the water can carry some things away."
"On the western hillside, plant some drought-resistant grass; it can stabilize that... whatever energy it is."
She pondered by herself like this, as if the sky falling outside had nothing to do with her.
Finally, the door to the conference room was slammed open.
Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo rushed in, his hair a chaotic mess like a bird's nest, his white lab coat smeared with oil, his eyes wide open and bloodshot.
He was clutching several printed reports in his hand, his hands trembling violently.
"Chief Engineer Wang, what's the verdict?" an engineer nearby couldn't help but ask.
Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo ignored him, rushed to Jiang Ning in a few strides, and slammed the papers onto the table with a "slap."
His lips trembled for a long time before he managed to choke out a sentence: "You... how did you manage to create this?"
Everyone crowded around, craning their necks to look at the papers.
They were covered in dense data.
"Density: 15.8 g/cm³ (twice that of ordinary steel)"
"Tensile strength: 3500MPa (more than three times that of special military-grade steel)"
"Melting point: 2800°C (the melting point of tungsten is only 3400°C)"
"Toughness: Cannot be measured, the machine reached its limit!"
"Weak energy radiation at room temperature, nature unknown..."
The conference room was filled with the sound of people gasping.
Any one of these numbers, if released, would cause an uproar in the global materials science community.
Now, all these data points were on that piece of black "scrap metal."
This was no new material; this was alien stuff!
"I... I was wrong." Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo looked at Jiang Ning.
This old expert, who had dominated the engineering field for a lifetime and never bowed his head, spoke with a voice full of both defeat and a touch of madness.
"I apologize for my previous ignorance." He bowed deeply to Chief Consultant Jiang.
"Chief Consultant Jiang, you... you lead us! From now on, whatever you say, we will obey without question!"
With Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo like this, the rest of the people had no more objections.
In the face of facts they had seen with their own eyes, any further questions seemed ridiculous.
"Pangu Base," this top-tier national machine, finally became a cohesive unit, rotating around Jiang Ning as its center with terrifying efficiency.
Over the next half month, everyone had their eyes opened, witnessing firsthand what it meant to have "divine engineering."
Jiang Ning's orders no longer needed to be relayed through Director Zhao Lixin and the others.
She sat directly in the temporary command tower, using a set of loudspeakers covering the entire site to personally direct every action of the tens of thousands of people.
Her command was simple, brutal, and terrifyingly effective.
"Machine No. 3, lower the bucket by three degrees. Yes, right there. There's a waste cable underneath; dig it out for me!"
"Team 7, that beam is five centimeters off. Tear it down and redo it! Don't tell me how long you've been installing it; if I say it's not okay, it's not okay!"
"Mixing team, there's one-thousandth too much graphite powder; dump that whole tank! Don't talk to me about waste. If we build with this stuff and it collapses in the future, that would be the biggest waste!"
At first, the workers had complaints about this nitpicky command style.
But it didn't take long for them to be convinced.
This young Chief Consultant seemed to have a third eye; no matter how small the flaw or how subtle the mistake, it couldn't escape her.
Slowly, no one complained anymore, and their eyes were filled with awe when they looked at her.
The entire construction site was like a precision instrument controlled by Jiang Ning, with every part operating without the slightest error.
Half a month later, a strange building stood in the center of the industrial park.
It was a hundred-meter-high tower, its body made of that special black material, covered with incomprehensible patterns.
Around the tower were thirty-six massive pillars of the same material, driven deep into the ground.
With the tower as the center, countless specially made copper wires spread out like a web, connecting to modified tanks and furnaces, covering the entire park.
That day, the project was completely finished.
Jiang Ning stood at the top of the tower, looking down at the massive "array" she had created with her own hands.
Director Zhao Lixin, Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo, and all key personnel gathered in the safety zone under the tower, waiting nervously.
"Everyone, retreat behind the red line!"
"Monitoring team, set all equipment power to maximum!"
"Are you ready?" Jiang Ning's voice came over the walkie-talkie, very calm, yet possessing a power that compelled obedience.
"Report, Chief Consultant, everything is ready!" Director Zhao Lixin gripped the walkie-talkie, his palms sweating.
"Good."
Jiang Ning closed her eyes, her hands changing into complex gestures.
The power within her body flowed down the tower beneath her feet and surged into the entire array!
A dull rumble came from underground, not loud, but it made everyone's heart tremble.
Immediately after, everyone saw the patterns on the surface of the black tower and the thirty-six pillars on the ground light up one by one, emitting a faint silver halo.
The halo spread rapidly along the web-like copper wires, instantly lighting up the entire industrial park!
"Good heavens! Look at the sky!" someone shouted.
Everyone looked up abruptly.
They saw that over the industrial park, those gray-black smoke clouds that had lingered for years, thick as solid matter, suddenly stopped moving.
It was as if they had been gripped by an invisible giant hand, and they began to rotate slowly toward the center of the park.
The speed got faster and faster, and faster!
In a few minutes, a massive tornado made of billowing smoke and exhaust gases connected the sky and the earth!
The scene was like the end of the world.
The center of the tornado was that hundred-meter tower.
All the exhaust gases were crazily sucked toward the top of the tower, then torn apart and decomposed by a force, and poured into the tower!
The sky above, at a speed visible to the naked eye, turned blue and clear bit by bit.
That industrial "poison cloud" that had plagued the city for decades had been swallowed alive by a giant "vacuum cleaner"!
Director Zhao Lixin, Chief Engineer Wang Jianguo, and the others stood with their mouths agape, staring blankly at this divine spectacle, their minds unable to think of anything.
They knew Jiang Ning was capable, but they never dreamed she could be capable to this extent!
This wasn't just purifying the air; this was clearly... changing the heavens and the earth!
