100: The commander has fallen to the ground!!
The monster, over four meters tall, turned its head, and eight small, crimson eyes instantly locked onto Gunnar, who was standing on the drop pod.
It let out a frenzied roar, its four limbs flailing wildly, ruthlessly sending two unlucky riflemen who couldn't dodge in time flying.
A glob of viscous bile, brewing within its jaws, was suddenly spat out.
Gunnar reacted immediately; he grabbed a Boarding Shield from his side, then instantly activated the engine thrusters on his back, leaping into mid-air.
His bright red cape had been reconfigured; not only did it not block the thrusters, but it also unfurled completely in the wake of the exhaust.
He looked down.
The glob of bile slammed hard into the drop pod where he had originally been standing, instantly corroding a large patch of metal and emitting a "hissing" white smoke.
The blue legion banner behind him had been raised. Gunnar looked at the white emblem on the blue background—it was the design he and 8225 had discussed for a long time before finalizing:
An inverted Ω with a skull inside.
"ROAR——!!!"
Having missed its strike, the monster seemed provoked; it roared at Gunnar in mid-air,
with an expression as if it were shouting— "Come over here!!!"
If you want it, you got it!
"Xeno! You will pay the price for your stupidity!"
Gunnar held the Boarding Shield in front of him and turned his back thrusters to maximum, charging towards the monster like a meteor.
"BANG!!!"
The giant bug hadn't even reacted before it took the shield bash head-on with its skull,
and immediately after, a roaring, vibrating Chainsword was plunged into its body.
"HISSS——!!"
Feeling the pain, the monster was instantly enraged, waving its four massive limbs and hacking fiercely from four different angles.
Gunnar kicked hard off the Boarding Shield that was still stuck to the monster, activated his back thrusters,
and performed a backflip in mid-air, easily dodging the four limbs that swiped past at high speed.
"WAAAAAAGH!!!"
Everyone nearby, seeing this scene, roared in unison, cheering for their commander.
"BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG!"
Just as he landed, Gunnar raised the heavy Electromagnetic Rifle that had been slung on his body and unleashed a barrage of fire at the monster's leg joints.
"HISSS——HISS!!!"
Perhaps because of the integrated metal armor, the bullets hit the Exoskeleton of those limbs with a "ding-dong" sound, all of them ricocheting off.
However, the monster was indeed enraged.
It continued to hiss, lowered its upper body, and then, like a cannonball leaving the barrel, it launched itself at Gunnar with a "whoosh."
"Is that all you can do, just scream?"
Gunnar looked at the clumsy figure and mocked it ruthlessly,
then immediately activated the maneuvering thrusters on his sides, sliding past the monster.
After regaining his balance, he raised his Electromagnetic Rifle again and fired a burst of bullets at the monster's torso—
they still ricocheted off.
"The left side of the shield wall has been breached!"
"Reinforce immediately!"
Suddenly, an exclamation came through his headset. Gunnar looked to his side,
the Swarm's offensive had become even more intense.
A large number of bugs attempting to leap over the shield wall were cut in half by Chainswords, and those diving down from above were shattered by strings of bullets,
but no matter how many were killed, the number of these bugs did not seem to decrease at all.
A shield-bearer on the left was pounced on by a bug from above, his shield tipped forward and was stripped away by the Swarm,
and a gap appeared in the shield wall.
Immediately, a massive number of bugs, as if finding a vent, poured crazily through this gap.
Gunnar opened the public channel; the distress signal from this Warship was still being transmitted continuously—there were still people on this Warship waiting for their rescue!
Gunnar raised his heavy Electromagnetic Rifle and unleashed a metal storm at the Swarm at the gap, then opened the squad communication and asked:
"Can you still hold on!"
"If you can't, abandon the mission and prepare to retreat!"
A series of hoarse shouts suddenly came through the headset—
"Every step is an epic! Every sacrifice is a hymn!"
"Commander, you said it yourself! We fight to the death and never retreat!"
"Let these bugs know what the word 'Limit' in our legion name means!"
"WAAAAAAGH!!!"
Perhaps it was their fighting spirit being ignited by the word "retreat," but the soldiers, who had been somewhat exhausted, suddenly erupted with tremendous energy.
They gathered all their strength and pushed back towards the gap,
the legion banner behind them seeming to snap in the wind.
"HISSS——"
Watching the bug turn its body and launch another attack at him, he raised his Electromagnetic Rifle directly, choosing to face it head-on—
As a series of sparks erupted on the monster's forehead,
Gunnar was surprised to discover:
The monster's skull was actually bulletproof?
There was no time to dodge, so he hurled the Electromagnetic Rifle in his hand at the monster,
then locked the joints of his powered armor and held the Chainsword horizontally in front of him—
"BANG!!!"
He felt a massive force colliding with him,
and in an instant, two huge dents were smashed into the deck beneath his feet.
Now is the chance!
The monster seemed to be stuck in a momentary stiffness. Gunnar seized this moment, reached out and grabbed a protrusion in front of him, activated his thrusters and leaped upward, flipping directly onto the monster's back.
Looking down, the monster was spitting a large pool of acid at the two spots where he had just been standing.
There was no time to be nervous; he felt every joint in his powered armor wailing,
and the Chainsword in his hand had jammed after taking that hit.
The boost provided by the powered armor was diminishing, so relying half on the brute force of his muscles, he grabbed the carapace protecting the monster's head and hoisted himself up,
then aimed the jammed Chainsword directly at the slight gap between the monster's head and body,
stuck it in, and then pressed down with all his might.
The Chainsword went in halfway, but could not go any further,
yet the bug was still struggling, thrashing its back wildly, trying to throw Gunnar off.
He gripped the handle of the Chainsword tightly and frantically pressed the activation button,
"Come on!!!"
"I beg you!!!"
"Spin!"
"ZZZRRRRRR!!!"
As if hearing his prayer, the Chainsword first emitted a burst of intense sparks, then suddenly began to rotate crazily,
a string of flesh and yellow pus was pulled out from the gap, splattering all over Gunnar's helmet,
and the monster instantly went rigid.
"BANG!!"
Gunnar struggled to rip the bug's head off,
the cells responsible for controlling the body instantly lost connection with it, and the bug's body, with Gunnar attached, slammed heavily onto the ground.
At the same time, the Swarm that had been besieging them, after that final burst of frenzy, gradually showed signs of decline and was eventually slaughtered to the last.
"Commander!"
"Commander!"
Only then did the others, who had been pinned down by the bugs, have time to check on their superior—
Gunnar was lying on a headless bug corpse over seven meters long (four meters when standing upright), the chain on the Chainsword in his hand had snapped, and his helmet was covered in pus and blood.
With the help of a few Frigates, Gunnar barely managed to stand up. The first thing he did was raise his hand to remove his helmet, then pointed at the large bug corpse that was still twitching and shouted:
"Finish it! Finish it!"
A few Frigates walked up, first using their Chainswords to hack it into pieces, then dropping a few incendiary grenades,
and only when the stench of burning accompanied by the smell of blood on the battlefield wafted into his nostrils did Gunnar finally relax slightly.
He took the legion banner from someone beside him and held it aloft,
then, moving his powered armor, which only had its basic transmissions barely functioning, he walked slowly into the depths of the ship.
His order was transmitted through the microphone on his throat to the headsets of everyone present:
"Continue advancing!"
"There are still people on the Warship calling for help!"
Immediately, the soldiers who had just let out a sigh of relief all tightened their nerves again,
they raised their weapons and followed behind their commander.
As they passed corner after corner, Gunnar's Frigates occasionally cleared out small bugs jumping out from corners; they didn't encounter any decent resistance along the way.
The corridors were filled with breached defensive positions, with fragments of Electromagnetic Rifles and powered armor scattered on the ground,
it looked like the airtight bulkheads here had been ripped open by force.
The closer they got to the Bridge, the more signs of this desperate resistance there were.
However, looking at the things along the way, Gunnar suddenly thought of a very strange question,
where did all those corpses go?
But soon, his question was answered—
the scene inside the Bridge gave him the answer:
Clumps of withered, reddish-brown flesh buds covered the floor, and in the gaps between these flesh buds, white bones were wedged.
A withered hand was gripping the emergency distress button on the console tightly; even though it was dried out, dehydrated, and broken, it had not let go—
this was the reason they kept hearing the distress signal.
So, had there been nothing left for a long time?
Gunnar was silent for a long time, then said:
"Rest in peace, brothers."
"Just as it says in the booklet the Boss issued, your sacrifice is a hymn."
"Children of the multitude stars, may your souls return to the multitude stars."
"Retreat!"
After saying this, he turned and left.
The soldiers also turned silently, and after leaving a few incendiary grenades behind, followed their commander.
Soon, the reddish-brown flesh buds twisted and deformed in the flames, making a "crackle, crackle" sound,
and they, along with the withered remains, were burned to ashes.
