27: Keys in hand!
Chen Kai raised an eyebrow, putting on a thoughtful expression.
Before he could even speak, the front desk guy, eager for the commission, had already dialed the manager's number.
After explaining the situation in detail, the front desk guy could be seen nodding repeatedly.
After hanging up, the front desk guy chuckled.
"I've checked with the boss. The lockers were supposed to be cleared out three months ago, so we might as well take this opportunity to clear out the ones that haven't been used."
"So… Brother, would you consider signing up for a Gym membership?"
"You've seen the resources at our Gym; the quality of the girls here is top-notch."
The front desk guy raised his eyebrows excitedly, as if he had figured out exactly what was on Chen Kai's mind.
Seeing this, Chen Kai didn't hesitate. He intentionally put on the act of a lecher who had been exposed, "Fine, if you put it that way, if you can help me clear out lockers 102 and 103 so I can use them, I'll sign up for a membership."
"Deal. I'll call the owners of those two lockers right now."
The front desk guy immediately opened his WeChat contacts and searched for the phone numbers left by the members.
He dialed the owner of locker 103 first.
"Hey Brother, this is from the Mighty Miracles Gym! We're clearing out the lockers at our store. Do you still have anything in locker 103?"
"You have a bag there? Are you coming to pick it up? If you don't, we're going to clear it out. Alright, you're coming to pick it up tomorrow? Okay, then we'll leave it at the front desk for you."
Listening to the front desk guy's conversation, Chen Kai couldn't help but frown.
They're coming to pick it up? What if the owner of locker 102 also wants to come and get their stuff?
He watched anxiously as the front desk guy flipped through his contacts for a long time before finally making a call.
Seeing this, Chen Kai immediately pricked up his ears, ready to listen to the contents of the call.
His palms couldn't help but sweat.
Everything depended on this moment.
The phone rang twice before it was answered.
"Hello, this is from the Mighty Miracles Gym! May I ask if you still have anything in locker 102? We are conducting our routine locker cleanup."
A cold, feminine voice came from the other end of the line.
"You're looking for my husband, right? My husband went to the US to participate in a bodybuilding competition. Is there still anything in the locker?"
The front desk guy was stunned. He clearly remembered that when the owner of locker 102 came to work out last year, he was still a complete newbie—the kind of "butterfly" who could catch a cold just by pushing a pair of Dumbbells.
How did he transform into a huge muscle-head overnight? Did he inject himself with veterinary drugs or something?
"Uh… I don't know if there's anything in his locker yet; we haven't opened it."
The cold voice on the other end replied, "Then just help me open the locker and see what's inside."
"Alright."
The front desk guy covered the receiver and waved at Chen Kai.
He already had the spare key labeled 102 in his hand; basically, the customers held one, and he held two.
Chen Kai followed the guy through the workout area and the Barbell bench press area, his gaze inadvertently catching a glimpse of the cold-faced woman in a sports tank top.
She was indeed quite pretty. If you were to rate her looks by percentage, Liu Yunshang would be a 96, and she would be a 95—they were evenly matched.
However, Liu Yunshang had a slight advantage: the Tiga Outerman.
The woman in the sports tank top was sitting on a leather chair, wiping away sweat. Her snow-white shoulders were drenched in sweat, emitting a faint, shimmering luster.
The woman noticed Chen Kai's gaze, nodded slightly, and smiled at him before turning her head away to adjust the Barbell plates, preparing to increase the weight.
Chen Kai gave an indifferent smile. After walking to the storage room, he watched as the front desk guy held the phone between his shoulder and ear, used his hands to pick up the key, and crouched down to unlock the locker door.
As soon as the locker door opened, Chen Kai impatiently bent down to check the location of the key.
He felt relieved when he discovered that the locker was empty.
"There's nothing in the locker. Could you please let your husband know that we've put this locker back into service?"
Afterward, the front desk guy hung up the phone, "Brother, how about it? Want to sign up for a card?"
Chen Kai frowned, watching as the guy just stayed crouched there talking to him, with no intention of leaving.
He had originally wanted to save some money, but it looked like that wasn't going to happen.
"Fine, I'll get a card. How much is a monthly card?"
"A monthly card? A monthly card is 188. I don't think the monthly card is very cost-effective. Brother, why don't you consider a yearly card?"
The front desk guy's smile faltered for a moment before he quickly started pitching other, more expensive membership cards.
"I need to get familiar with the environment first, right? Besides, is the point of a membership just the card? It's about the personal trainers, isn't it? You get a commission for referrals, right? Once I'm familiar with things, I'll just buy a few personal training sessions, won't I?"
Chen Kai smiled faintly. He didn't even know how many "big pies" he had been fed by bosses; even if he hadn't drawn them himself, he had certainly eaten plenty of them.
From childhood to adulthood, he had always been eating those pies.
Things like "If you endure the bitterest of the bitter, you will become the master of the masters." The reality is, if you endure the bitterest of the bitter, you'll just have endless bitterness.
Endure the bitterest of the bitter, and the boss gets to drive a Range Rover.
The front desk guy immediately put on an expression that said, "I get you."
"Alright, come with me to the front desk to sign up. I'll give you the key in a moment. Let's lock the locker first so no one else takes it."
The front desk guy pulled on the locker door casually. The next moment, a bunch of keys fell from the metal plate on the door.
Many of the keys on the ring were rusted. On the red string keychain, there was a gold bead, and beneath the gold bead, a plain-looking copper coin was tied.
He curiously picked it up and examined it.
Chen Kai's heart tightened. "Are you freaking crazy? Why are you slamming the locker door?"
"Do you want me to dispose of these keys for you, or should I put them back?"
The front desk guy asked indifferently, his eyes full of anticipation for the commission.
"Put them back. A small key doesn't really get in the way. I can just use this keychain to hold your Gym's locker key."
Chen Kai let out a long sigh of relief and took the keys from his hand.
He nonchalantly stuffed them into his pocket.
"Alright, then follow me."
He followed the guy to the front desk, registered, scanned the code, and paid 188 in cash. A gold card printed with "Mighty Miracles" was handed to him, along with three keys.
Chen Kai took the keys nonchalantly, returned to the storage room, and locked all three locker doors. Only then did he take the copper coin into his hand to examine it.
There was a trace of rust on the copper coin, and it was almost impossible to see what characters were printed on the back. Its condition could only be described as average.
It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad either.
Chen Kai shifted his gaze to the little red string tied to the copper coin. It looked like it had been around for a while, and there was a small gold bead hanging from it.
"It's quite shiny. Is this gold-plated, or is it some kind of fake?"
He couldn't tell. Nowadays, it's hard to distinguish the true from the false with various substances that look like gold; you can't tell the fakes from the real ones with the naked eye.
He weighed it in his hand. The little bead, smaller than a pinky fingernail, actually had quite a bit of weight to it.
