305: Finale
“That’s right.”
“The Universe you are in is not a natural evolution; it is merely a meticulously designed experimental ground.”
“And all life within this ground, from the lowest cells to races that consider themselves gods, are merely experimental subjects.”
“The so-called Abyssal Demon Whale, the changing of the eras… could it all just be…” “They are merely tools for the periodic cleanup of failed experiments.”
The Overseer seemed to read his thoughts, adding indifferently, “Like a gardener pruning dead branches, to ensure the normal operation of the garden.”
Silence.
The truth brought not shock, but a despair that pierced to the bone.
What was the meaning of all the struggles of civilization, all the sacrifices of heroes?
“What about us?”
Su Lei’s will trembled slightly, “What are we, these so-called victors, even considered?”
The Universe model in the hands of the humanoid figure of light began to change, and a super civilization, glorious to the extreme, emerged; their technology could create stars and warp space-time.
“They were the most successful experimental subjects of the last era; we called them the Precursors.”
“They were also the only civilization that, before the format activation, glimpsed the truth through their own power.”
“Unwilling to end there, they poured the strength of their entire civilization into creating two things.”
Light and shadow flickered; one was the Eternal Furnace, representing the pinnacle of technology, and the other was precisely the crown of the era, representing the highest mystery, resting on Su Lei’s head.
“They hid these two items in the Kindling Ark, letting them drift in the river of time, awaiting the appearance of a companion worthy of inheriting their Legacy and participating with them in the true ultimate experiment.”
“The ultimate experiment… what is it?”
Su Lei asked the crucial question.
“Breaking the walls of the laboratory.”
For the first time, a kind of longing appeared in The Overseer’s voice, “To see the true reality beyond the walls.”
The humanoid figure of light paused slightly, and its tone returned to indifference, “Of course, that is still too far for you.”
“You merely obtained an admission ticket by passing the trial.”
“You and the civilization behind you are still too weak; you need time to grow to a level where you can converse with us.”
“Us?”
Su Lei keenly caught this word.
“I am not the only Overseer. Alright, variable, question time is over.”
“As a victor, you can make one reasonable wish within my capabilities, and I can grant it.”
One wish.
Infinite power? Eternal life?
These thoughts flashed by, then were dismissed by Su Lei.
The Foundation of a civilization lies in its people, in those departed heroic Souls.
Countless faces appeared in his mind.
Comrades who fought side by side, veterans who built a Great Wall with their flesh and blood, and Demon Shadow, who died to cover his retreat… Su Lei slowly looked up.
“My wish is simple.”
He looked directly at the figure of light, “I hope that all the heroic Souls who sacrificed themselves to protect my civilization… can… come home.”
The space fell into a long silence.
After a long while, The Overseer spoke again, “An… interesting wish.”
“Not for yourself, not for your race, but for the departed marks.”
“Do you truly understand what ‘coming home’ means?”
“The Soul is the imprint life leaves in space-time; returning to the Origin Sea is irreversible.”
“Forcibly retrieving them is reversing Karma, challenging the underlying Laws of the laboratory.”
“You and your civilization will forever bear this Karma that should not have existed.”
“I understand.”
Su Lei’s will did not waver in the slightest, “Some debts, someone must pay.”
“This fate, I will bear it alone.”
“Good.”
The Overseer seemed touched, “I can grant your wish, but not now.”
“Because the laboratory is about to undergo its final upgrade.”
The Universe model in its palm began to change drastically; all galaxies, matter, and energy collapsed madly towards the center, eventually transforming into a brilliant singularity of infinite density, containing the information of the entire Universe.
“This is the ultimate experiment.”
The Overseer’s voice took on a hint of fanaticism, “We will tear down this old laboratory, compress all things into one, and create a higher-dimensional singularity Universe that follows the most perfect order! And we will become the creator gods of the new world!”
Su Lei understood instantly.
This was not exploration at all, but a complete destruction and reboot! These “gods” were tired of constantly erring experimental subjects and wanted to personally create an absolutely obedient “paradise.”
“And you, Su Lei.”
The Overseer’s gaze fell again, “As the most excellent experimental subject of the old Universe, the inheritor of the Precursors, you have two choices.”
It showed Su Lei two completely different futures.
One led to a brilliant singularity: “Cooperate with me, and your civilization will become the first residents of the new world, gaining eternal life, becoming immortal deities.”
This was a temptation no life could refuse.
However, Su Lei’s gaze fell on the other path, leading to endless darkness.
“Or.”
The Overseer’s voice turned cold, “Refuse.”
“You and your civilization will be regarded as the last Impurities, and along with this old Universe, be completely erased.”
Having said that, it waited quietly.
One was a false eternal paradise, the other was a real Hell of destruction.
In Su Lei’s mind, those compatriots who fought for freedom and dignity reappeared, recalling the thousands of years of uninterrupted Legacy of Huaxia; “Are kings and generals born with special qualities?” “Man can conquer nature!”
A smile, full of defiance and composure, slowly curved at the corner of his mouth.
“My choice?”
His will was like a drawn sword, its edge fully revealed, “I choose the third path.”
“There is no third path here.”
“No.”
Su Lei shook his head, “A path is never given by others; it is walked by oneself!”
The moment his words fell, his will erupted with a roar!
His Soul core and the crown of the era on his head resonated as never before!
A vast will, belonging to no Law of this world, soared into the sky, and behind him appeared countless phantom figures of ancient people who fought against heaven and earth, heroes who resisted natural disasters with their flesh and blood.
Their wills transcended space and time, merging with Su Lei, converging into a torrent that shook the Universe.
“Our spirit will never be enslaved!”
Su Lei, at this moment, was the Incarnation of the entire civilization’s will; he issued the final challenge to the supreme deity.
“You want to destroy our world? Then step over our corpses!”
“You want us to be walking dead in your false paradise? Dream on!”
As this resolute challenge echoed, The Overseer fell into a long silence.
It seemed unable to comprehend why the tiny experimental subjects dared to defy their creator, and even less able to understand the dignity that preferred destruction over being kept in captivity.
“I seem to have overestimated you.”
After a long while, its cold, disappointed voice sounded, “I thought you possessed wisdom beyond the mundane, and would understand that following the current is the Law of survival.”
“But I was wrong; you are still full of the shortsightedness, arrogance, and ridiculous emotions of a lower civilization.”
In its words was the deepest contempt and manipulation stemming from a different level of life.
In its eyes, all life was merely slightly more interesting lab rats, destined only to obey or be eliminated.
Su Lei smiled, his will becoming incredibly clear and sharp.
“You are also wrong.”
“I wear the crown not to beg for anyone’s charity.”
“But to be able to stand here, to be worthy of telling you…”
“You are not worthy!”
