43: Chapter 42 If they can't die, then capture them alive.
Countries and the Dragon Kingdom were secretly competing to see who could remain the most composed.
The East Sea Defense Line Command Center, however, was completely serene.
General Zhan Kuang had just hung up the phone with the Supreme Command Headquarters when he saw Luo Yu walking in with Godzilla.
"General, are there any arrangements?"
"Yes."
General Zhan Kuang nodded and said, "The higher-ups want me to take you somewhere."
"Where?"
"The Dragon Kingdom's Abyssal creature research base." General Zhan Kuang lowered his voice and said, "We keep the corpses of the Abyssal Giant Beasts we've killed over the years there. We want to see if Godzilla can eat them."
"Alright."
Luo Yu's expression shifted, and he asked, "When do we leave?"
"Now."
General Zhan Kuang checked his watch. "The helicopter is already prepared."
Half an hour later, an armed helicopter took off from the East Sea Defense Line and flew toward the interior.
Inside the cabin, Luo Yu sat by the window, and Godzilla was napping on his lap.
"Luo Yu," General Zhan Kuang said suddenly, as if he had thought of something. "Do you know why our Dragon Kingdom preserves the corpses of these Abyssal Giant Beasts?"
"For research?"
"Yes, but not entirely." General Zhan Kuang sighed and said, "The physical structure of Abyssal Giant Beasts is completely different from Earth's creatures. Our scientists want to study them to find their weaknesses."
"Have you found any?"
"We've found some. For example, the core of an Abyssal Giant Beast is usually located to the left of the chest cavity; as long as you hit that spot, you can severely injure them. Also, Abyssal Giant Beasts are particularly sensitive to sound waves of certain frequencies, which is why we've developed sonic weapons."
Luo Yu listened, feeling a sense of emotion.
Humanity had truly paid a high price for survival.
You have to know, there are a total of seven wormholes globally. The one in the Pacific Ocean is only the third largest; the biggest one is in the Atlantic Ocean, with a diameter of over ten kilometers. Over the past fifteen years, at least ten thousand Abyssal Giant Beasts have crawled out of the wormholes. The pressure on humanity is too great.
"Howeverβ¦" General Zhan Kuang changed the subject. "The cost of these research findings is also very high."
"How high?"
"Every year, at least a hundred researchers are infected with unknown viruses from contact with the corpses of Abyssal Giant Beasts, and thirty percent of them die."
Luo Yu fell silent.
This world was more cruel than he had imagined.
The helicopter flew for over two hours and finally landed on a barren Gobi desert.
It looked like there was nothing here, but... Luo Yu noticed that there were quite a few anti-aircraft missile silos hidden on the surrounding hills.
"Follow me."
General Zhan Kuang jumped off the helicopter and led Luo Yu toward a huge rock.
Walking up to the rock, General Zhan Kuang pressed a few buttons on his watch, and the rock suddenly split open, revealing a metal passage extending downwards.
"This is one of the Dragon Kingdom's top-secret research bases, codenamed 'Eye of the Abyss'." General Zhan Kuang said as he walked. "Fewer than a hundred people in the whole country know of this place's existence."
The passage was very long, and there was a thick alloy door every ten meters on both sides.
Every time they passed a door, it required multiple checks, including iris scanning, fingerprint recognition, and voiceprint verification.
Luo Yu roughly counted them; there were twelve security doors alone.
Finally, they reached the end of the passage.
The last door slowly opened, and a pungent smell of formalin rushed toward them.
Luo Yu frowned and looked up.
Before him was a massive underground space, as large as a hundred soccer fields, with a height of over a hundred meters. In the space, dozens of giant glass containers were neatly arranged, each containing the corpse of an Abyssal Giant Beast.
"This..."
Luo Yu was shocked by what he saw.
He had seen the Abyssal Giant Beast that Godzilla had killed, but that was just one.
And here, there were at least fifty of them.
"These are the Abyssal Giant Beasts our Dragon Kingdom has killed over these fifteen years." General Zhan Kuang walked to a container and looked up at the monster inside, which was over forty meters tall. "Each one was exchanged with the lives of countless soldiers."
Luo Yu followed silently behind General Zhan Kuang, looking at the containers one by one.
Most of them were Second-Tier Giant Beasts, ranging from thirty to fifty meters in size.
A few were Third-Tier Giant Beasts, ranging from fifty to eighty meters in size.
And in the deepest part, Luo Yu saw a behemoth over a hundred meters tall.
"That is..."
"A Fourth-Tier Abyssal Behemoth, codenamed 'King of Calamity'." General Zhan Kuang's voice became low. "It crawled out of the Atlantic Ocean wormhole two years ago. At that time, countries around the world joined forces, deploying fifteen heavy mechas, thirty SS-Class Awakened, and twenty tactical nuclear bombs, only barely managing to kill it in the Pacific Ocean."
"How many people died in that battle?"
"Eight thousand three hundred and twenty-seven." General Zhan Kuang closed his eyes and said, "The Dragon Kingdom sacrificed one thousand six hundred people. Because the United States had already obtained a Fourth-Tier Abyssal Behemoth corpse in the previous joint operation, this one was given to the Dragon Kingdom."
Luo Yu looked at the giant beast with mixed feelings.
At this moment, Godzilla on his shoulder suddenly opened its eyes, its vertical pupils fixed on the Fourth-Tier Abyssal Behemoth, and it let out a low "hissing" sound.
"Godzilla, what's wrong?"
Godzilla jumped down from Luo Yu's shoulder and wobbled toward the container.
Walking up to the container, it raised its head, its little claws scratching at the glass, and a glimmer of excitement flashed in its vertical pupils.
"It seems very interested?"
General Zhan Kuang noticed Godzilla's reaction.
"Yeah." Luo Yu squatted down and patted Godzilla's head. "Godzilla, can you eat this?"
Godzilla turned its head, looked at Luo Yu, and then shook its head.
"You can't eat it?"
Luo Yu showed a puzzled expression.
Godzilla nodded again, then pointed at the Fourth-Tier Abyssal Behemoth with its small claws, pointed at its own mouth, and finally made an "X" gesture.
At this, Luo Yu understood.
"You mean, you can't eat dead ones?"
Godzilla nodded.
"Why?"
Godzilla tilted its head, a flash of helplessness appearing in its vertical pupils, and then it drew a circle on the ground with its small claws, and tapped in the middle of the circle.
Luo Yu looked at the pattern on the ground and suddenly understood.
"You mean, after an Abyssal Giant Beast dies, the energy in its core dissipates?"
Godzilla nodded vigorously.
Luo Yu turned to look at General Zhan Kuang and said helplessly, "General, it seems these corpses are useless to Godzilla."
"Useless?"
General Zhan Kuang frowned and said, "Then what should we do? Do we really have to go find live Abyssal Giant Beasts? Or go beg other countries to buy nuclear waste?"
"Yes."
Luo Yu stood up, patted the dust off his body, and said in a deep voice, "No need to beg other countries."
"You mean... let Godzilla go to the East Sea and hunt by itself?"
"Yes. Anyway, Abyssal Giant Beasts often appear near the East Sea Wormhole, and there must be some in the deep sea as well. It's a perfect chance for Godzilla to practice, and fill its stomach while it's at it."
"But..."
General Zhan Kuang hesitated, his tone serious. "The deep sea has now become a forbidden zone for humans. No one knows how many Abyssal Giant Beasts are in the deep sea near the wormhole. If a Fourth-Tier or even Fifth-Tier Giant Beasts appears..."
"General."
Luo Yu interrupted General Zhan Kuang and said confidently, "Godzilla's current strength makes dealing with Third-Tier Giant Beasts like child's play. Even if it encounters a Fourth-Tier Abyssal Behemoth, it won't be at a disadvantage. Besides, Godzilla needs actual combat to improve itself. It can't just stay in the base eating a little bit of nuclear waste all the time, right?"
"Fine,"
General Zhan Kuang thought about it; there was indeed some logic to it. "I'll report to the higher-ups and request permission for Godzilla to patrol near the East Sea Wormhole."
"However..."
General Zhan Kuang looked at Luo Yu and said, "You have to go along too, in case of any accidents, so you can control Godzilla in time."
"No problem."
Luo Yu grinned.
Just right, he also wanted to see what the wormhole looked like.
Just at this moment, a piercing alarm suddenly sounded from deep within the base.
"What's going on?" General Zhan Kuang's expression changed slightly.
A researcher in a white lab coat ran over, his face pale. "General, it's bad. The Abyssal Giant Beast in the number three container... it... it moved!"
"What?"
General Zhan Kuang widened his eyes in disbelief. "What did you say? How could a dead giant beast move?"
"I don't know!" The researcher's voice was trembling, and he said incredulously, "But... the monitoring shows that its heart has actually started beating!"
Luo Yu and General Zhan Kuang looked at each other and ran toward the direction of the number three container at the same time.
