26: Relics

Joa’s words fell.

Polaris, who was beside him, couldn’t help but ask,

“Zombies? Tyrants?”

“What are those?”

Turning to look at Polaris, and then at the fifteen mercenaries who were equally puzzled but hadn't spoken, Joa remained silent for a moment, thinking about how to explain.

It was reasonable that there were no zombie-type movies or games in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Zombies…emm…”

“Just think of them as enemies. They are infected enemies, and you must absolutely not be scratched or bitten.”

“Once you are accidentally infected… within a very short time, you will become one of them.”

“Completely lose your sanity and become bloodthirsty living dead.”

The zombies Joa spoke of made everyone present look at each other.

“Also, these zombies have almost no pain, only a desire for blood.”

“So, if you don’t want to become one of them, when you shoot, you must aim for the head.”

“I think this shouldn’t be difficult for you.”

Upon hearing this, the fifteen Instructors present, after a moment of silence, stomped their feet in unison, saluted, and then said,

“Guaranteed to complete the mission!”

“Very good!”

Nodding in satisfaction, Joa randomly pointed to three Instructors.

“You! You! You!”

“The three of you, each lead ten people, and depart immediately.”

“The rest of you, stay at the camp on alert, ready to support the mission team at any time.”

Upon receiving the order, the fifteen Instructors saluted again.

“Yes, Officer!”

Watching a troop transport helicopter carrying a team of thirty-three people, as well as a large amount of weapons and ammunition, fly towards the direction of the ruins.

Joa let out a light breath.

“I hope I don’t have to wait too long.”

Regarding whether he could successfully obtain the Progenitor Virus on this trip, Joa was not worried.

The firearms and weapons of war he stored in the system space were more than enough, let alone for obtaining a Progenitor Virus; they were even enough to attack a city.

Zombies, when facing thermal weapons, were completely like paper.

The doomsday novels Joa read before he transmigrated, if the zombies were not strengthened, or the use of thermal weapons was not restricted, it would basically be impossible to continue writing.

To take a step back, even if these mercenaries failed,

Then next, it would be Joa and Polaris going personally.

Well, Joa was just an extra; currently, the main combat power was Polaris.

Returning to the command center,

Joa and Polaris both stared intently at the computer screen.

It showed the internal view from the troop transport helicopter.

Each of the two hundred mercenaries who came to Resident Evil had a hidden camera that wouldn't affect their movements.

The footage they captured during their actions would be transmitted to a signal vehicle with an extremely wide coverage.

“Lorna… look closely, I don’t know the exact number of zombies and Tyrants inside the ruins.”

“I only know that there’s absolutely no way it’s without danger inside.”

“So, if they fail…”

As he spoke, Joa looked at Polaris with a slightly solemn expression.

“It will have to be just the two of us.”

Upon hearing this, Polaris frowned slightly.

“Why?”

“Since it’s so dangerous here, why are we still coming?”

“I really don’t like it when you do things without ever consulting me!”

“It makes me feel like you don’t trust me!”

Seeing Polaris getting a bit emotional, Joa quickly spoke to comfort her.

“OK, OK.”

“Look at me!”

Grabbing Polaris’s shoulders with both hands, Joa had a serious expression.

“I promise there won’t be a next time. If I have any more plans, I will discuss them with you.”

“But this time! Please trust me!”

“The thing in that ruin is really important to me; it can make me stronger!”

“Become very strong…”

“I… want to protect You… want to protect everything I care about… the power that won’t be taken away by others…”

Hearing these words, Polaris took a deep breath and calmed down.

Then she passionately embraced Joa and kissed him fiercely.

After a long while, their lips parted.

“I understand!”

“If they fail!”

“I will help You get what You need!”

······

“Approaching target location. Fast rope descent possible in one minute.”

“Good luck, everyone.”

Hearing the pilot’s broadcast from the cockpit inside the troop transport helicopter,

The mercenaries, who had already prepared in the cabin, stood up from their seats.

They lined up neatly and came to the cabin door.

One minute passed, and the helicopter gradually came to a steady stop.

“Faster, faster, faster!”

The hatch opened, and ropes were thrown down.

The thirty-three mercenaries completed their fast rope descent within just a few minutes.

After they landed, the helicopter returned.

The ruins were in the forest, and there was nowhere for the helicopter to land, so it could only return.

Eighteen fully armed mercenary Instructors, holding electromagnetic rifles and wearing thermal imaging helmets.

Fifteen fully armed mercenaries, holding standard carbine rifles and wearing night vision helmets.

With this firepower configuration, as long as they didn’t encounter an overly large mutated creature, the mission was almost impossible to fail.

Silently, they made a few gestures.

The three Instructors each led ten team members to start searching for an entrance on the periphery of the ruins.

Half an hour later,

The three teams of mercenaries, who had searched around without any success, converged and all shook their heads.

After pondering for a moment, an Instructor spoke.

“Let’s use explosives.”

Upon hearing this, the other two nodded.

After finding a place that looked like an entrance, blocked by rubble, and setting up the explosives,

The mercenaries, who had retreated to a safe distance, pressed the detonation button.

Bang, bang, bang!

Explosions sounded one after another.

Rubble splattered everywhere.

The entrance was successfully blown open.

Just as the three Instructors were about to lead their men into the ruins,

Eerie roars sounded one after another.

Raising their rifles and aiming at the ruin entrance,

One of the Instructors joked in a relaxed tone,

“Oh ho! The Master here is quite hospitable.”

No sooner had he spoken,

The entrance to the ruins was immediately completely blocked by the tide of corpses swarming out of the darkness.

“····Oh! F*ck!”

“Fire! Fire!”

Without needing a reminder from the Instructor, upon seeing the group of rotting, constantly roaring zombies,

The mercenaries present immediately fired their weapons in unison without hesitation.

Whoosh! Bang!

Dududududu!

The sound of electromagnetic rifle bullets exploding.

The sound of silenced rifles firing.

Zombies falling one after another after being hit.

Zombies whose flesh and blood were splattered after being hit by electromagnetic rifles.

The battle scene was extremely bloody.

“Reload!”

“Retreat! Retreat!”

“Damn it, how many more of these monsters are inside!”

“Watch out for grenades!”

Just a few minutes after the battle began, a large area of zombie corpses had accumulated outside the entrance of the ruins.

Roughly speaking, there must have been at least several thousand corpses.

And the entrance to the ruins was still continuously spewing out a tide of corpses.

······

Command center.

Joa and Polaris frowned as they watched the screen.

‘So many zombies… my guess was indeed correct!’

‘The zombies in the ruins must have been put there by Umbrella Corporation.’

Regardless of whether they were put there for observation or to guard the Sun Ladder,

The vanguard team Joa sent out now couldn't avoid a fierce battle.

Feeling somewhat uneasy, Joa kept tapping his fingers on the table.

Without much hesitation,

Picking up the walkie-talkie on the table, Joa spoke,

“Send another twenty people and five armed helicopters over, immediately!”

“Fighter jets, prepare for immediate support!”
