114: Chapter 114 Dark Sniper
Jiang Peng slammed on the brakes, the police car tires screeching against the ground as it came to a stop less than a hundred meters from the Pajero.
"Get out!" Jiang Peng pushed the car door open and drew his gun.
The police lights flashed, the red and blue beams cutting through the darkness in alternating patterns.
The light hit Jiang Peng's face, making him look like a god descending from the heavens.
Jiang Peng slowly raised his right arm, pointing at the Audi A6 that had been chasing them.
Suddenly, he raised his gun to the sky—bang!
The gunshot exploded into the night sky.
After firing the warning shot, Jiang Peng pushed his left hand forward, signaling them to stop, and shouted sternly:
"Stop!"
The Audi A6 behind them stopped, killed its headlights, and the car door opened.
Half of a body leaned out from the driver's seat; in the darkness, the face was indistinguishable, revealing only a silhouette.
But it was faintly visible that the person was cradling a long gun in their arms.
Zhang Bin was quick-witted and agile; he leaped from the car and tackled Jiang Peng to the ground.
Bang!
A crisp gunshot rang out, like the tearing of fabric.
The bullet flew past them, barely missing them, leaving a shrill whistle in the air.
"Sniper rifle!" Zhang Bin, lying on the ground, roared at the car, "Get down! Get under the seats!"
Zhao Yang was tall, but fortunately, he was flexible and quickly crouched into the space under the seat.
He reached out and pulled hard, dragging the dazed Li Chengjian to his side.
At this moment, Jiang Peng was lying on the ground, calling for help:
"Captain, we've been attacked on the county road three kilometers west of Donggang Town. The enemy has a sniper rifle, and the situation is unclear..."
Bang!
Another crisp gunshot rang out.
Before he could finish, Jiang Peng let out a muffled grunt as a flower of blood bloomed on his left shoulder.
His body jolted, and his phone fell to the ground.
Zhang Bin grabbed Jiang Peng and rolled forcefully, taking cover behind a poplar tree on the side of the road.
The trunk was too thin to stop a sniper bullet, but it was still better than being exposed in the open.
After stopping, Zhang Bin felt his left arm go numb.
He looked down and saw a large patch of dark red soaking through his sleeve.
When he got out of the car to tackle Jiang Peng, the bullet had grazed his arm, tearing away a piece of flesh.
"Brother Bin, you've been shot!" Jiang Peng said, clutching his shoulder, his face deathly pale.
"It's just a flesh wound." Zhang Bin gritted his teeth, raised his gun, and aimed at the Audi in the rear.
The distance was too great; a handgun's range couldn't reach it.
The Pajero's door opened, and someone stepped out.
In the darkness, the figure was tall, holding a sniper rifle, and was approaching them, looking for a shooting angle.
"Damn it!" Zhang Bin cursed under his breath, "They have a long range, and we're caught in the middle. We're dead if we stay here!"
They had to find a way out.
Jiang Peng panted heavily, cold sweat streaming down his forehead. He lifted his head slightly and shouted toward the car door:
"Zhao Yang... turn off the police lights... the lights are exposing us..."
The police lights were still flashing, red and blue beams sweeping across them alternately.
Although not very bright, they precisely exposed their hiding spot.
Every time they flashed, it was like telling the enemy:
I'm here.
Zhao Yang regretted his actions so much that his guts were practically turning green; if he had known the opponents were this ruthless, he would have been better off just staying put.
But no matter how dangerous it was, he had to find a way to save Jiang Peng and Zhang Bin.
Otherwise, if the enemy closed in, all four of them would die.
Zhao Yang carefully leaned out and crawled toward the driver's seat.
Li Chengjian was curled up on the floor mat in the back seat, trembling all over.
"Comrade Zhao," Li Chengjian said, his voice trembling, "Are we... going to die here?"
Zhao Yang didn't answer; he took a deep breath and continued to lean forward.
He had to turn off the police lights, or Jiang Peng and Zhang Bin wouldn't last three minutes.
Fortunately, he was tall with long arms, so he stretched his right arm out to reach the center console.
Whoosh—
A bullet pierced the windshield, and the glass instantly shattered into countless cracks.
Shards of glass rained down on him.
Zhao Yang instinctively ducked, but a cut opened up on his face, and warm liquid began to stream down his cheek.
"Zhao Yang!" Jiang Peng roared, "Get down!"
Zhao Yang lay flat on the seat, gasping for air. His heart was beating so fast it felt like it was going to explode.
The police lights were still flashing.
Gritting his teeth, he reached out again, felt for the police light switch, and flicked it hard.
Click.
The flashing red and blue beams suddenly extinguished, and the surroundings plunged into complete darkness.
The night wind howled, and the stalks in the farmland rustled.
On the expressway in the distance, traffic flowed endlessly.
No one knew that just a hundred meters away, people's lives were hanging by a thread.
In the darkness, Zhang Bin had already taken off his jacket to bandage Jiang Peng's wound.
"Old Jiang, can you shoot?"
"I can manage."
"Let's lie still and wait for them to get closer before we fire."
"Alright, Brother Bin. I'll take the front; I'll leave the back to you."
Zhang Bin and Jiang Peng quickly agreed on a strategy; as long as they could hold out for twenty minutes, reinforcements would arrive.
The two gunmen clearly weren't going to give them any time to wait.
One after the other, they used the street trees as cover and moved forward cautiously.
Zhang Bin whispered a reminder: "Don't panic. There will be shadows when they move through the air. Wait until you have a clear shot before firing."
"Firing will expose our position, so we must move immediately after shooting."
They were currently pressed against the ground, which gave them some advantage in the darkness.
Jiang Peng gritted his teeth, making them chatter, "Got it, Brother Bin. The target on my side is thirty meters away."
In the darkness, he couldn't even see the front sight or the rear sight; hitting anything at this distance was impossible.
But this distance was crucial; if they got ten meters closer, it would be a matter of life and death.
Zhang Bin stopped talking and looked toward the back of the police car.
The other gunman was approaching slowly, still about forty meters away.
He held his gun in his right hand and waited silently.
Forty meters, thirty meters, twenty-five meters...
Zhang Bin's nerves grew tighter and tighter.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Behind him, the sound of gunfire erupted.
Jiang Peng fired three shots in rapid succession, and the dark figure in the distance fell to the ground with a thud.
Jiang Peng was truly the team's sharpshooter; relying solely on muscle memory, he was able to take down the dark figure over a dozen meters away.
But Zhang Bin had no time to celebrate; he grabbed Jiang Peng's belt and dragged him more than a meter away.
Just as he pulled Jiang Peng away, a bullet struck the ground where he had just been lying.
The time it took to fire three shots was enough for the gunman behind them to take an accurate shot.
At the very instant the enemy fired, Jiang Peng gritted his teeth against the intense pain in his left shoulder, raised his right hand, and pulled the trigger toward the spot where the muzzle flash had appeared.
Bang!
After the shot, everything returned to silence.
A moment later, Zhang Bin whispered, "Old Jiang, not bad!"
Jiang Peng seemed to have exhausted all his strength, panting incessantly:
"Brother Bin... it was all... thanks to your command."
Zhao Yang was stuck between the front seats and feeling very uncomfortable; hearing that the noise outside had stopped, he slowly raised his head to check the situation.
"Zhao Yang, get down! Don't fall for a trap!" Zhang Bin roared.
Zhao Yang's arms went limp, and he collapsed into the driver's seat.
That was fucking terrifying.
Just then, the sound of police sirens rang out in the distance, and four police cars came roaring in with their lights flashing.
Upon spotting the targets, the four cars immediately split up, forming two teams of two, and approached the Audi A6 and the Mitsubishi Pajero, respectively.
Officers jumped out of the cars; the two in front pushed forward slowly, holding shields, while the officers behind followed closely with their guns drawn, ready for anything.
Just as the police were about to approach, the enemy vehicles suddenly erupted with two earth-shattering explosions.
Debris scattered everywhere, and flames shot into the sky.
