52: Chapter 52 DNA Countdown

Jiang Nan was very displeased when she received the call.

This guy had been back for three days and hadn't even seen her once; what right did he have to order her around?

She said crossly, "Oh, your temper has certainly grown since the training ended! I'm currently taking samples at the City Center Blood Station and can't leave for the time being."

These words made Zhao Yang's heart tighten.

Although the June 11 Special Investigation Team's method was clumsy, it was indeed feasible.

Tongan City wasn't large; by comparing the genes of blood donors, they would eventually find a group of people with blood relations close to the murderer.

Then, following the kinship ties in the genetic information, they could gradually narrow down the scope of the investigation.

Given enough time, it was truly possible for them to crack the case.

Hearing the resentment in Jiang Nan's tone, Zhao Yang realized he had been a bit too hasty just now.

He quickly pleaded in a soft voice, "My beautiful Jiang, I'm begging you. This matter is extremely urgent."

"Who's yours? In your dreams!" Jiang Nan's tone softened a bit.

Zhao Yang didn't know how long Zheng Beichen and Gao Yan could stall. To relieve the pressure on them, he had to use his trump card directly.

"Whether the June 11 Case can be settled once and for all depends on today!"

Hearing him say this, Jiang Nan's resentment vanished instantly, and she perked up.

"Ah?! Are you serious? I'm coming back right now. See you in a bit!"

Jiang Nan hung up the phone and said to Xu Yiming, who was with her:

"Captain Xu, I have an urgent matter and need to return to the Technical Brigade. I'm requesting leave from you."

"The Technical Brigade?" Xu Yiming was a bit puzzled. "Who is it? Who dares to bypass me and command my subordinate?"

If there was something important at the Technical Brigade, how could he, the Brigade Leader, not know?

Jiang Nan had no choice but to explain:

"It's Zhao Yang. There's an urgent matter with the Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection Supervision Group that needs help."

The spirit of the supervision mobilization meeting had already been conveyed to the grassroots level, so Xu Yiming was naturally aware of it.

Although he had a good impression of Zhao Yang, he still joked:

"What urgent matter could that kid possibly have to make you so anxious?"

"Captain Xu, I'll explain to you later." Before her voice had even faded, Jiang Nan had already turned and left.

Jiang Nan didn't know what tricks Zhao Yang was up to, but she knew he was indeed in a hurry.

To settle the June 11 Case once and for allβ€”he was probably bragging a bit too much.

Therefore, she didn't mention a single word about the case to Xu Yiming.

Seeing Jiang Nan's long legs hurrying downstairs, Xu Yiming quickly followed:

"Wait, I'll drive you."

When the two arrived downstairs at the Criminal Investigation Detachment, Zhao Yang was already there, pacing anxiously.

Jiang Nan opened the car door and walked quickly toward him.

"Zhao Yang!" Her voice was soft, carrying a hint of excitement.

Although they hadn't seen each other for only three or four days, her heart raced and her face flushed in front of an outsider.

Zhao Yang saw her in her police uniform, looking heroic and spirited, and his anxious gaze softened.

It was as if, in his eyes, Jiang Nan was the only person in the entire world.

From the looks in their eyes, Xu Yiming could already see something unusual.

It felt like his own fine cabbage had been rooted up by a pig.

Last time at the Technical Brigade, when he said Zhao Yang was there to find a partner, he was just joking.

He hadn't expected his words to come true; this matter had actually become a reality.

He waved to them. "Go on, there's no one in the Technical Brigade right now."

Xu Yiming deliberately left them some private space, like a kind old father.

These words were exactly what Zhao Yang wanted.

With an apologetic look on his face, he smiled at Xu Yiming:

"Thanks, Captain Xu. Just wait in the Special Investigation Team next door; I might need your help with something later."

"Alright, have a good talk." Xu Yiming nodded, a knowing smile in his eyes.

Talk about what? I have serious business to attend to, okay!

Zhao Yang didn't say more; he turned and quickly went upstairs with Jiang Nan.

Upon reaching the Biological Sample Testing Room on the second floor, Zhao Yang quickly closed the door and locked it from the inside.

Jiang Nan's whole body jolted. She turned swiftly, her beautiful eyes wide as she looked at Zhao Yang.

Why lock the door in broad daylight!

Unexpectedly, Zhao Yang had already taken the opportunity to pin her against the wall, lowering his head to give her soft lips a light peck.

"Zhao Yang, you rogue! Don't mess around, this is a place of work!"

Jiang Nan was both embarrassed and anxious, yet she didn't push Zhao Yang away.

Her words were weak, but her body was honest.

Her beautiful eyes were filled with shyness as she looked at him with a hint of resentment.

After those days of sweet companionship, not seeing him for three days felt like three years.

However, the expected long kiss did not come.

"I'd love to be a rogue, but there's no time today."

Zhao Yang didn't continue; instead, he took a half-step back and pulled a small paper bag from his pocket.

"There's a strand of hair in here. I need you to do a rapid DNA test and then compare it with the samples from the June 11 Case."

Zhao Yang had never been involved in criminal investigations, so his sudden presentation of this felt like a prank to Jiang Nan.

How could he possibly know who the murderer was!

Bringing a random sample for testing didn't make much sense.

"Zhao Yang, do you realize you're wasting my time?"

Jiang Nan's tone clearly carried a bit of a complaint.

Zhao Yang couldn't explain.

He checked the time on his wrist, then looked up at Jiang Nan with a serious face:

"I can't keep the suspect for too long. Nan Nan, please hurry. I need to know the result as soon as possible."

At this point, Zhao Yang couldn't help but feel a wave of nervousness, and his breathing became rapid.

The closer he got to the truth, the more his heart tightened.

If Zhou Zhiqiang wasn't the killer, most of his previous efforts would be in vain.

He would have to turn back and start with Wang Lei.

Wang Lei had already been dismissed and was now just an ordinary police officer, outside the scope of this supervision.

Even if he went to great lengths to find a reason to move against him, he might not necessarily find any useful clues.

That "Nan Nan" swept away all the resentment in Jiang Nan's heart.

Seeing his chest heaving and his rapid breathing, she immediately understood that this test was out of the ordinary.

"Alright, find a place to sit and don't disturb me."

Jiang Nan had always been decisive and efficient; she acted immediately without hesitation.

She took the paper bag from Zhao Yang, turned to the testing bench, and tied her messy stray hairs back.

Subsequently, she put on a mask and rubber gloves and began taking the sample.

Her movements were skillful and fluid.

Zhao Yang sat to the side, watching her quietly.

Even though only her large eyes were visible now, Jiang Nan was still breathtakingly beautiful.

Especially her focused expression made Zhao Yang lose himself in the sight.

A man is most handsome when he's working.

A focused woman is likewise stunningly beautiful.

The DNA extraction and purification were complete, then it was placed in the instrument for amplification; next was the waiting process.

Jiang Nan took off her mask and came to Zhao Yang's side.

"The sample you brought is different from the one at the crime scene. The cell count is small, making the detection much more difficult."

"How soon can we get the results at the earliest?" Zhao Yang stood up abruptly from his seat, his tone becoming anxious.

Jiang Nan reached out and smoothed the wrinkles on his shirt.

It was as if she were smoothing away the anxiety in his heart.

"Being anxious won't help. What I'm doing now is amplifying the DNA to a quantity that the instrument can detect. If we're lucky, five hours. If not, it could take a week."

In later generations, there would be rapid DNA testers that could produce results in an hour and a half.

But at this time, they could only rely on traditional equipment.

In his haste, Zhao Yang had clearly overlooked this point and was a bit too optimistic.

Keeping Zhou Zhiqiang for five hours under the guise of an ideological and political talk was extremely challenging.

He didn't know if Zheng Beichen and Gao Yan could pull it off.

Time passed minute by minute, and in the blink of an eye, three hours had gone by.

As lunchtime approached, Zhao Yang had to think of a countermeasure.

His eyebrows knitted together, forming deep furrows.

Seeing him like this, Jiang Nan didn't disturb him; she sat leaning against him, resting her head on his shoulder.

She wanted to put him at ease with her silent company.

When two people who like each other are together, they won't feel the atmosphere is awkward even if they don't say a word.

Just as Zhao Yang was at a complete loss, his phone suddenly rang, breaking the silence in the room.

He took out his phone and looked; his head suddenly began to buzz.
