5: Chapter 5: 99.9% DNA Similarity? The Killer Is Someone Else

In this era, computers were outrageously expensive. A desktop could easily cost several thousand yuan, and Zhao Yang couldn't bring himself to buy one.

His monthly salary was over two thousand yuan, which was considered a high income compared to the seven or eight hundred yuan monthly salary of an average civil servant.

Even so, after sending some back to his hometown, buying clothes for his girlfriend, and going out to eat, there wasn't much left.

On the other hand, Tian Ye, the second-generation rich kid, carried a laptop around all day, showing it off in the office.

In the office, Zhao Yang stared blankly at the computer screen.

Tian Ye didn't understand the point of Zhao Yang's interviews over the past two days and was somewhat confused:

"Brother Yang, why didn't we publish the news about yesterday's crime scene? Now the Municipal Bureau has blocked all information regarding the June 11 Case. If we film more later, the timeliness will be gone!"

If the draft had been published, he would have been walking right into the line of fire again.

Zhao Yang replied perfunctorily, "I'm gathering more material. Once the case is solved, we'll run a major story."

Tian Ye curled his lip and muttered under his breath:

"By the time the case is solved, the video tapes will probably be rusted."

While talking to Tian Ye, Zhao Yang entered the number Jiang Nan had given him into the search bar.

He discovered the other party's nickname was: Jiang Nan.

It wasn't subtle at all; it was way too direct.

Shouldn't she have picked something like 'Dancing Lightly' or whatever?

The corners of his lips curled up as he quickly changed his own nickname to 'The Scenery of Old' and sent a friend request:

Hello, I am Zhao Yang.

Next, while waiting for the friend request to be accepted, Zhao Yang chatted idly with Tian Ye.

At quitting time, Su Yawen walked past the office door with her head held high.

Turning her head to see Zhao Yang playing on the computer, she gave a cold snort and left with the click-clack of her high heels.

Tian Ye pointed outside. "Brother Yang, it's Sister Yawen!"

"I'm not blind," Zhao Yang shot him a glare.

"Then why aren't you chasing her? Don't tell me you've really fallen for someone else..." Tian Ye's eyes lit up with a gossipy look.

Zhao Yang kicked out at him. "You're just a kid, you don't know shit. Scram home for dinner. I'm requisitioning this computer for the next couple of days!"

Tian Ye dodged nimbly. Thinking Zhao Yang was only taking the computer to chat on QQ, he didn't forget to toss back a barb as he walked out the door:

"Fickle heart, burning with illicit passion!"

With that, he vanished in a flash.

Zhao Yang shook his head helplessly, unable to help but think back on his past with Su Yawen.

He and Su Yawen had started dating back when they were at the Beijing Broadcasting Institute.

Zhao Yang studied Journalism, while Su Yawen studied Broadcasting and Hosting.

After starting work, the two had even reached the point of discussing marriage.

But as time passed in the professional world, Su Yawen gradually became more critical of Zhao Yang.

Nothing he did seemed right to her.

The main issue was her disdain for Zhao Yang's family being too poor.

In his past life, after Zhao Yang was suspended for reflection, Su Yawen decisively cut ties with him.

Even though Zhao Yang spent half of his monthly salary on her, he still couldn't keep her.

Less than a week after they broke up, Su Yawen got together with Director Xiong Bo, the Deputy Director of the Arts Department.

Whether it was education or looks, Director Xiong Bo couldn't compare to Zhao Yang.

But his father was the Deputy Director of the Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department.

This woman was just that realistic.

Indeed, being a 'simp' had no future.

True love isn't just one-sided giving; it's a two-way street.

Having been reborn, Zhao Yang would never waste his feelings on such a woman again.

As he sat there lost in thought with his chin in his hand, the computer suddenly let out a 'di-di-di' sound.

The little penguin icon was also flashing incessantly.

Zhao Yang quickly opened QQ and found that Jiang Nan had already added him as a friend and sent two images over.

Zhao Yang clicked 'Receive' without hesitation.

One was a fingerprint comparison report, and the other was a DNA comparison report.

They were both paper reports that had been photographed with a digital camera and sent over. It seemed like she had gone to a lot of trouble.

Zhao Yang quickly scanned the DNA comparison results:

Genetic similarity 99.9%!

He suddenly felt his head buzz. Had all his hard work been for nothing?

With such high similarity, could it be that Sun Hongwei really was the murderer?

Zhao Yang's hands trembled, sweat broke out on his forehead, and his fingers felt as stiff as wooden sticks.

After a long moment of struggle, he managed to type out a few words.

[The Scenery of Old]: It's over. Isn't this solid evidence!

[Jiang Nan]: ???

[The Scenery of Old]: My trust was misplaced, completely misplaced. I ultimately misjudged that bastard Sun Hongwei.

[Jiang Nan]: What nonsense are you talking about?

[The Scenery of Old]: The similarity is almost 100%. Do you dare say that stuff isn't Sun Hongwei's?

[Jiang Nan]: However, it's not 100%. Your genetic similarity with a macaque is also 98% (Curled lip emoji).

[The Scenery of Old]: Why are you insulting me? (Annoyed emoji).

[Jiang Nan]: Let me put it this way: for different DNA samples from the same person, the similarity must be 100%.

[The Scenery of Old]: Got it! (Embarrassed emoji).

Having received this explanation from Jiang Nan, Zhao Yang finally let out a long sigh of relief.

Thinking about Jiang Nan's performance in the office, Zhao Yang couldn't help but praise her.

[The Scenery of Old]: Officer Jiang is brilliant. Our coordination in the office was so seamless!

[Jiang Nan]: Who wants to act with you? I just don't want an innocent person to be wronged. Next, it's up to you, Great Reporter Zhao!

[The Scenery of Old]: I won't let down your expectations, Officer Jiang!

[Jiang Nan]: I didn't give you this report. You understand that, right?

An informant naturally needs protection. While Zhao Yang was thinking about how to clear Jiang Nan and the others of involvement, another line of text popped up in the chat box.

[Jiang Nan]: Forget it. Even if someone knows I gave it to you, they can't do anything to me!

Zhao Yang was a bit surprised. This girl really had a strong sense of justice.

But wasn't she being a bit too bold?

[Jiang Nan]: By the way, why is your nickname 'The Scenery of Old'?

[The Scenery of Old]: Because 'Jiang Nan is good'...

[Jiang Nan]: Am I that close to you? Get lost (Angry emoji).

[The Scenery of Old]: Alright, I'm off to handle the serious business. Wait for my good news!

Jiang Nan sat in front of the computer, her face flushed with anger.

Her nickname was Jiang Nan, and the other party just happened to be called 'The Scenery of Old.' She didn't believe in such a coincidence.

This guy was doing it on purpose.

Looking back at the computer, Zhao Yang's avatar had already gone grey.

He ran off fast. Speechless.

On the other side, Zhao Yang had already picked up his Nokia 3310 and dialed a number.

The phone rang twice before someone picked up.

"Hello, who is this?"

The voice was low and heavy, carrying an air of authority.

"Sun Hongwei is suspected of bribery and murder. He has been in police custody for over 24 hours."

Zhao Yang didn't introduce himself but instead threw out this sentence to see the other person's reaction.

The other party fell silent for a few seconds before speaking in a stern tone:

"Slandering others is immoral behavior. If this is spread in society, you will have to pay the price!"

It was clear the other person was very angry.

Sun Hongwei was an upright person; it was normal for the other party not to believe it.

Zhao Yang said calmly, "Everything I said is true."

The other person said, "Even if it's true, so what? I believe the law will return justice to Hongwei!"

Zhao Yang countered, "What if someone is deliberately framing him?"

"Nonsense!" The other party hung up the phone unceremoniously.
