102: The fatal "diagonal line"

The halftime whistle blew, and the 8,500 spectators at Victoria Park were still buzzing from the excitement of that brilliant goal.

Kyle Walker was surrounded by his teammates, his face still flushed with the excitement of scoring. "I was just thinking at the time, since they all thought I was going to cross, I'd do the opposite."

"Great choice!" Vardy clapped Walker on the shoulder. "Your timing for cutting inside was perfect."

In the away team's changing room, Old John stood in front of the tactics board, holding Lin Feng's instructions he had just received.

"Gentlemen, listen up," Old John's voice echoed in the cramped space. "They'll be coming at us hard in the second half. We need to change our strategy."

He drew a new formation on the tactics board. "4-1-4-1, Henderson drops back to the defensive midfield position, forming the first line of defense."

Jordan Henderson nodded. "Understood, Boss. I'll be that barrier."

"Our defense needs to be like a coiled spring," Old John continued. "Let them attack, but be ready to unleash a deadly counter-attack at any moment."

The atmosphere in the home team's changing room was completely different. Nottingham Forest's manager, Colin Calderwood, was busy outlining tactics to his players.

"They were just lucky," Calderwood said, drawing circles on the tactics board. "In the second half, we need to push up more aggressively. Chris, your assists need to be more decisive. Chris, try more long-range shots."

Wes Morgan sat in the corner, silently adjusting his shin guards. As the team's defensive lynchpin, being outsmarted by a newly promoted youngster in the first half left him feeling very annoyed.

The second half began, and Nottingham Forest indeed showed the pedigree of a strong team. Their attacks surged like a tide towards Hartlepool United's half.

In the 52nd minute, Chris Commons received the ball 25 meters outside the box. The lightning-fast winger chose not to dribble, but to take a direct long-range shot.

The ball flew with a strong spin towards the top left corner of the goal. Kasper Schmeichel made a flying save, his fingertips just touching the ball, tipping it over the crossbar.

"That was close!" Martin Tyler's voice was a little tense. "Commons' long-range shot was of very high quality, and Schmeichel's save was even more world-class."

The corner kick was taken, and Junior Agogo leaped high in the box. The powerful striker's header was powerful and headed straight for the goal.

Schmeichel again showed an excellent reaction, turning his body to catch the ball. The Denmark goalkeeper's performance drew enthusiastic applause from the fans in the stands.

"Schmeichel is in heroic form today!" Alan Smith exclaimed. "He's like an insurmountable wall."

In the 65th minute, Nottingham Forest won a free-kick opportunity in the attacking third. Chris Cohen stood in front of the ball, carefully observing the wall's positioning.

Cohen took a short run-up, and gently pushed the ball with the inside of his right foot. The ball curled around the wall, heading straight for the bottom right corner of the goal.

Schmeichel judged it accurately, moved quickly into position, and held the ball steadily.

Old John, on the sidelines, looked at the situation on the field and secretly congratulated himself. Lin Feng's tactical adjustments were so timely; the 4-1-4-1 formation made the team's defense much more solid.

Henderson played excellently in the defensive midfield position; he was like a magnet, always appearing where he was needed most. Every interception was clean and crisp, and every pass was simple and efficient.

The central defensive pairing of Ryan Shawcross and Captain Nelson, protected by Henderson, was as solid as a rock. Their cooperation grew more telepathic, with covering and assisting done perfectly.

The match entered its final 15 minutes, and the situation became extremely deadlocked. Nottingham Forest's attacks grew fiercer, but Hartlepool United's defense also grew tougher.

In the 82nd minute, Matt Cohen surged forward from the left, and after receiving a pass from a teammate, he immediately crossed the ball.

The ball arced through the air, accurately finding Agogo in the box. The powerful striker out-jumped Shawcross and headed the ball towards the goal.

Schmeichel again showed his heroic form, leaping high and punching the ball out of the box with both fists.

"Schmeichel! It's Schmeichel again!" Martin Tyler's voice was a little hoarse. "The Denmark goalkeeper's performance today has been perfect!"

The match entered injury time, and Nottingham Forest made a final desperate push. But Hartlepool United's players were united, performing their defense to the utmost.

The moment the final whistle blew, Victoria Park erupted. 1-0! Hartlepool United defeated Nottingham Forest at home, securing their third consecutive League win!

The players embraced, celebrating this hard-won victory. Schmeichel was tossed high into the air by his teammates; he was the undisputed hero of this match.

The fans in the stands sang the team anthem loudly, their voices echoing through the sky. The significance of this victory was immense; it proved that Hartlepool United was not a fleeting upstart, but a team with genuine strength to contend for the championship.

At the post-match press conference, Nottingham Forest's manager, Colin Calderwood, was very gracious.

"We lost to a team with extremely high tactical discipline and execution," Calderwood said calmly. "They deserved the victory. Hartlepool United's performance impressed me; they are no longer the same team they were a few months ago."

On the other hand, Old John appeared relatively modest. "This is only the third round of the League; we still have a long way to go. But today's victory certainly gives us more confidence."

That night, the headlines of major media outlets were dominated by this match. A senior reporter from The Times published a commentary: "Hartlepool United's rise is not just a victory of money, but a dimension-reducing strike of advanced football philosophy against traditional English play. Their behind-the-scenes boss, Lin Feng, deserves everyone's attention."

On the night the match ended, Lin Feng was in his office reviewing the match footage when his phone suddenly rang.

"Mr. Lin, this is Mark Thompson, Puma UK Director." The voice on the other end of the phone was full of enthusiasm and a hint of urgency. "I apologize for my previous offer. We have re-evaluated Hartlepool United's value."

Lin Feng put down his coffee cup, a slight smile playing on his lips.

"May I ask, are you available tomorrow?" Thompson continued. "I would like to personally fly to Hartlepool to discuss a brand new contract with you, one that matches the status of a 'champion'."
